Thanks for the video. As usual picked up some small tips that can make me a better artisan. I think painting your piece is as important as the carving. I've seen some nice carvings ruined by bad paint jobs. When I paint I see how I could have made my carving better and easier to paint.

I made an elaborate holder. I took a 2x2x2 block and drilled a 1” flat bottom hole about an inch deep. I filled that hole with lead for weight. I attached a 1x1x6, centering it on on the opposite face of the 2x2x2 block. On the other end of the 1x1 block, I have a drywall screw glued in like your version. It is a perfect handle and will stand up vertically on its own when I need to sit it down. It is heavy enough to stand up to the hairs dryer when I need to dry something

Doug, you have read my mind with this video. I just got a set of really good quality acrylic paints( I usually do woodblock paintings) , but all of my miniature carvings ( all from your videos) have ended up looking terrible. I envisioned these grand pieces, gradients, shades etc but I always end up with a single color that looks horrible. Uploaded this vid just the right time as I'm in the process of making Christmas presents. Thanks so much sensei

You can use a carving platform that you clamp down. Square wood three sides are edged and material glued in that helps to hold wood in place. Try relief carving. Find picture make paper copy rub pencil on back. Lay on flat carving wood and trace the outline. Lift off go over lines and start carving. Leave high points for last

You might also try carving soap or sweet potatoes or apples to help retrain your muscles. I like to use soap to test out an idea before carving in wood because the softer soap is quicker to prototype.

There's also power carving options if the clamp doesn't work out. Never personally used any but they seem like a good fit for someone w physical disabilities.

Thank you so much for all the videos you post. I'm a beginner and have learned so much. I have a question, though. As someone who has painted with acrylics on canvas for decades, I was always taught that it was a big no-no to paint acrylics over oil. Oil prevents acrylics from adhering. So when I see you seal your carvings with oil and then paint with acrylics, I am very confused. However, it seems to work for you, so I trust that you understand the science behind it. Can you explain why it works?

Nice, comprehensive tutorial Doug. I keep reading that in the artist painting world you never put acrylics over oils. They say it would crack and peel. Don't know and maybe a question for Alec. Thanks!
@wattsnex2725
@wattsnex2725 10 месяцев назад
You wouldn’t use acrylic paint over oil based paint when it comes to painting, the gloss will create a bad bond. But the oil paint doesn’t penetrate wood like just oil does. Oils like BLO or tung oil will penetrate and harden. This can prepare the wood for just about any paint mix.
@billyaxley1762
@billyaxley1762 10 месяцев назад
@@wattsnex2725 So the oil has to dry before putting acrylics over it?
@wattsnex2725
@wattsnex2725 10 месяцев назад
@@billyaxley1762basically yes. The oil soaks into the wood any excess should be wiped off. You can paint then. If you paint shortly after oiling, the oil can help with paint bleeding. If you wait a few days, the oil will harden more, which can be good because it prevents thinned paint from getting sucked in and blotchy. I prefer painting shortly after oiling. I know plenty of people that skip the oil and apply poly to seal, and just paint over the poly. You can really layer well with that technique as it is easy wipe off paint. Creates great shadows.

I replaced an eye dropper in a bottle with a paintbrush and filled the bottle with BLO. The brush stays in the BLO so there are no fire concerns with drying rags or brushes. Hot glue sealed any gaps to prevent spills, has held up well for years.
