Painting Flora with David Dunlop - Luminous Flowers in Red.
Created and produced by the Emmy® award winning team of acclaimed artist and teacher David Dunlop and director/producer Connie Simmons.
In this program, Painting Flora - Luminous Flowers in Red, join David for an informative and inspiring workshop in oil as he experiments with new methods to reinvent floral painting.
Flowers have been a subject of fascination for artists for centuries, and in this program David experiments with new methods to reinvent and expand the genre of painting flora. Artists today have a new and vast menu of possibilities - using the tools of cameras and digital images, allowing close-ups and diffraction distortions, captures of blurred motion, software manipulations and other mutations. Using the latest tools and techniques as well as drawing inspiration from the great masters of the past, David finds new and innovative ways to capture the beauty of nature and creates a stunning new composition inspired by red-toned flowers from the New York Botanical Garden.
In his exuberant and lyrical oil painting, David explores color, movement, and texture and discusses each step of his painting process. His infectious enthusiasm and multi-disciplinary perspective combining art, history, philosophy, science and technique will provide a unique workshop experience for you - and offer you new ideas and compositions for your paintings!

Introduction: Begins at 0:00 minutes
Composition and Diagram: Begins at 06:26 minutes
Palette: Begins at 15:19

I just came across your channel yesterday and finished watching the video today…this was a most fabulous experience! This is a beautiful painting but the whole process, your thoughts and teachings made this experience one of a kind! Many things you said were things that I thought but wondered if it made sense…now it does. Thank-you for sharing this and it is this kind of art teaching that one needs. 😊

Hi David, You know the saying that when you are ready to receive information it will come to you. Well...I have been struggling for several days with the how to present florals without them being kitschy or expected and out of the ether you appear with this amazing and inspirational way to tackle this problem, At the moment I 've set my oils aside while I experiment with painting on silk with dyes so I need to think about how I can adapt this idea in this format. Whatever happens it will be FUN to try!! thank you so much for appearing out of the ether!!!!

First time seeing this, but already a favourite. Terrific discussion. About 15 minutes before you started to quell the 'eyeballs' in the upper left, there was an even stronger kind of devilish cat face present. I was reminded of a wonderful meme I saw a few years back of a fiendish looking cat with laser beam eyes ripping its way out of a box, with the caption "Tell Schodinger I'm alive, and I'm gonna find him". :-)

Hello David. I'm typically a pastel painter; however, I dabble in oils and would love to try this technique. Unfortunately, I cannot find the enamel / aluminum painting surface that you referenced in the video. Who makes this product and where can I purchase it? Again, thanks, you are a wonderful inspiration :)

Hi David, curious on your canvas which is aluminum coated with what? Thank you for this tutorial.
@DavidDunlopSimmonsArt
@DavidDunlopSimmonsArt 9 месяцев назад
Thank you for your question and your kind comments, alisonthomson4008 - I paint on many different surfaces, from quadruple primed Belgian linen, paper, copper, single sheet aluminum, a composite sheet aluminium, like Dibond, comprising two 0.3 mm thick aluminium cover layers and a polyethylene or mineral core, and sometimes I paint over older paintings on all of these surfaces. It really depends upon my painting, and different surfaces give different effects. Some are harder surfaces and you can make different types of marks with your paint brushes, squeegees , paper towels, and other tools. I always experiment and learn from all of these paintings. Good luck with your painting! Thank you for writing. Kind regards, David and Connie

So….if I buy a Dibond panel from a factory outlet do I need to prime the surface in some way, or can I paint on it raw, so to speak???? The art shop seems to charge so much and they say the panels are ‘prepared”. But they don’t say in what way!!

I cut my - wearing gloves - but you can also ask the shop to cut it for you. You can search those terms and find the material. I believe that certain online artstores may now carry it. I consider you a great master, seriously. For me painting doesn’t need any justification and it is not progressive as the science tends to be. If a painter wants to be again naturalist or impressionist or realist or use traditional oil techniques, nothing avoid him to be potentially a poet in his work. A rose is a rose, is a rose, and beauty is never and never will be out of fashion, because it is a human need. This doesn’t make an impressionist painter a poet due to his vision, nor any of his work will be visual poetry in the higher sense, but it can happen. He has to work for make it happen, but with his attitude, not with his theory and vision alone. Same for architecture, it is contemporary architecture beautiful? It’s any building art? But it happens. Artists must be artisans first, deeply committed in what they do at a personal level. Then poetry can be reached, here and there. “Our task is to penetrate so deeply, painfully and passionately with this temporary and precarious Earth, that its essence is invisibly reborn in us. We are the bees of the invisible. We wildly collect the honey of the visible to accumulate it in the great golden hive of the Invisible." Rainer Maria Rilke (from the letter to his Polish translator Vitold von Hulevicz of 13 November 1925). Thanks for your generosity!❤
