Thank you so much Alex not only for this video but for giving me the inspiration & confidence to try oil washes for the first time, haven't painted in approximately 7 years and they weren't really 'a thing' back then the way they are now, your passion has reignited my love for our most therapeutic, meditative & rewarding hobby, I wish I could express my thanks in a more substantial way "but I being poor have only my gratitude, I lay this at your feet, tread softly" 🙏

+10 for oils. Also, cut up makeup sponges can be magic for removing oils on the raised areas.

I like grungy. Most of my minis are post apocalyptic minis, so grungy is the name of the game. I usually use washes and contrast paints to get the rusty, tarnished, dirty look (plus some cheap pigment dust made from crushed up colored chalks). I've been wanting to try oil washes, but with a small apartment and bad ventilation, I haven't thus far. Since it's summer I'm thinking about giving them a shot and painting outside to use them on some completed terrain (rundown shacks for my post apocalyptic games) for added effect.

Another reason why oil paints have their place in miniature painting, and this video proves that oils aren’t just for the historical bust painters! I have my collection of oils from years ago that I used a few times but never really stayed with (I was much younger then and GW had just released a new product called ‘inks’), but after the years and the outstanding videos by yourself and Luke at Geek Gaming (and black magic craft, tabletop witchcraft etc), I have come back to using oils again. It’s refreshing to see you use oils at the middle stages of painting and not the end like others do. Thank you for sharing this video with us!

Truly, you have gone from mastering the grim dark from darker hued colours and stepped into the light without sacrificing that grounding influence; I find the combination of techniques both fascinating and interesting, yet also adaptable to a mass paint scheme if so one desires. Kinda fascinating watching your scheme, seemingly start from wanting some more catchy rogues to take on a life of it's own within the owlcast.

Well thank you. I think this approach would be great for a large number of miniatures. Varnish steps are just not such a big deal when dealing with a lot of minis. And in the end, after the oil wash, one can see how many actually need additional work.

I think this video, along with the previous one about the crossbow stormcast pavise trenchers, shows one of the more beautiful aspects of the hobby. I do not like the industrial-ish estethics you gave them with those 3d printed bodies and i don't think they fit the stormcast overall vibe, yet i still see them as beautifuly done miniatures and i admire the amount of creativity you put in them. I do not need to like the idea behind them to really enjoy looking at the whole process and the end result, and i think it's beautiful. :) Apart from that - top notch video, as always.

Thank you S. I’m glad you say it, it’s the way things should be in a hobby I think. A lot of things can be appreciated even if it’s not something we “like”. There’s not a lot of right or wrong, just hobbyists doing their thing :)

6:58 I like to make sure that the thinner is evaporated before speeding up the drying proces by using a fan (or hairdryer). Otherwise the air generated bij de fan can move the oil wash in places where you don't want it to go. Speeding up drying time can be done with air circulation, heat, mixing in a alkyd medium or letting some of the excess oil seep into a cardboard like you did in this video. One thing I have noticed is that having not enough oil medium in the paint (by creating a wash that is too thin for example), can make the pigment move out of the crevasses and fall apart. Thicker washes help prevent this issue.
@52Miniatures
@52Miniatures 2 года назад
Yes, there is a point of when washes start to fall apart. I've understood this can also depend on quality of oil paint.
@StevilKanevil_
@StevilKanevil_ 2 года назад
I don't think I've seen a move convincing use of oil washes. It's usually a dirty down wash of brown or black, not several to match the colours of each area

Great video! really love how your colors and highlights turned out! I had tried my firsts oil wash a few weeks ago and i think i may have put mine on too thick and didn't let it dry long enough. As it kind of just wiped off. So it was cool to see how you applied yours.

Instead of using cotton swabs, try small make up brushes.. the ones from eye shadow and such.. the cotton tends to leave little bits of cotton on minis that can add unwanted texture unless promptly noticed and removed. great video BTW, I just recently did a similar thing with my battle sisters.

7:10 as long as the oils are dry, there is no need to varnish before continue painting with acrylics. In fact did that yesterday with no issue at all; can't even tell the difference. That being said varnishing can be handy if you don't want to wait until the oils are completely dry. If you decide to varnish I would still wait until the top layer is dry. Especially if the oil layer is thicker (which isn't the case with washes), you can run into issues if you varnish right after the application of the oils. Oils tend to have a satin finish and I know that you have a preference for matt finishes, so that is another reason to varnish.

@52Miniatures

Personally I'd recommend the more expensive kind, but stay away from the expensive pigments. Artist paints are usually priced according to pigment, but there's not really any point in getting the 40$ green instead of the 8$ green.

"Revolutions are far more tricky". True, and no need for a revolution when there are gems like using that black spirally cotton bud. Note to self..must check if Muji ships to the US! Further note to self.. black cotton buds at Muji now sold out... how did that happen so damn quickly? ;) I've become a big fan of oil washes, so this was a welcome video to help me up my game a bit. Thanks, Alex.
@52Miniatures
@52Miniatures 2 года назад
I've been getting tip on using some kind of makeup brush sponge. I must confess to limited knowledge here. but I think something like this: www.muji.eu/pages/online.asp?PID=7115&qclr=4547315822867 Thus getting no cotton bud residue - The only downside with a reusable product is I guess one will constantly have to clean it in white spirit.
@markfrommontana

@@52Miniatures Thanks Alex, I’ve used makeup brushes to good effect as well. I found the Muji cotton buds on Amazon (I’m presuming the real thing and not knock offs- but then why would anyone want to sell counterfeit cotton swabs? 😉). eBay has listings for the spirally buds with ridiculous prices. After my vortex mixer er incident I’ve become much more cautious about eBay whether it’s for a $5, $50 or more purchase. 😒

I'm really glad to see you wearing a mask while working with oils. I feel like there's a tendency for people to downplay the health risks. It's more like hearing damage from loud noise exposure - you notice an acute symptom which seems to go away (being dizzy) but repeated exposure builds up a small amount of damage every time. No-one needs to suffer permanent memory impairment just for a slightly better way to wash miniatures.
