Ravaged Star: Armies Of The Veil-Touched, a new line of physical miniatures from Mini Wargaming and Lazy Squire Games. Dave from Mini Wargaming sent me this great miniature and I instantly wanted to give it a grim and dark paint job. As inspiration I dwelled into images from one of the most famous medieval painters - Hieronymus Bosch.

I got to spend a weekend in s-hertogenbosch a few years ago and it was wonderful. I was surrounded by Hieronymus' work - in canals, in cheese wheels, and especially in the Hieronymus Bosch center. I was in Vught (which is right next to s-hertogenbosch) for work for a week, and was supposed to head to Amsterdam for the weekend but when i found out where I actually was, i stayed and am the happier and richer for it.

the subtle grey scale is an interesting innovation, the 'bog-standard' zenithal is almost too coarse for this quality.

Thank you Keith. It was an experiment and I like the outcome. Using the grey meant I could go heavy on the zenithal spray, getting nice coverage and less splatter and the drybrush lifted the raised areas in a way zenithal priming does not.

Tamiya flat white for zenithal highlights, my dude. It gives the best finish of any white, no spidering, super fine atomization, exemplary coverage. There's no going back once you make the switch.

Bosch is one of my all time favorite artists - the more you look at his work the darker it gets. And the better it gets. And the more amazing it gets. But enough about that, these figures look amazing and using Bosch as the inspiration was a genius idea, and the results are fantastic so far! I can't wait to see what you do with the rest of the figures

I love the vibe of your minis. Kind of grim, but subtle. Thin lines, and lively colors, that together look very cohesive, detailed (near lace) and not as lively at all. Great effect. I like the thought of the only piece of fabric in hell is a latrine roof... For me, the standard looks like an old football jersey, that belonged to some ogre or a even a giant. For a legion from hell, a torn transfer on the banner wouldn't be out of place. As long as it looks like the paint was torn off, and not as if part of the numeral was mysteriously slid to another part of the banner. I love the mildew technique. Very convincing. Not that I will admit to being too familiar with mold stains.

I love this video, its so cool to see someone take explicit inspiration from a specific gernre/artist... As an art history student I really enjoy these refrence points and I think there is a lot of inspiration to take from these kinds of paintings!

Thank you Mika. There is definitely inspiration to be had. Mine was very instant and not very deep. But just taking in anything “non mini related” and then take away what sticks - is great and rather simple. A simple “that looks cool” can go a long way.

I will admit, though, that I enjoy painting cluttered desks. And bookshelves. Demons and space marines don't seem to spend a lot of time at their desks, do they?

Those are some sexy minis! Really wish I could justify adding more to my boxes of unpainted minis^^ Ah well, another time. (-. Lovely paintjob as always. Side note. Regarding oils and white spirits. There are actually water soluble oil paints nowadays, so one can use oils, without white spirits. (tbh, I haven't tried them out myself, but the plan is to buy 1-2 next time I order oils and try them out)

Thanks H! Yeah, I want to try the water soluble oil paint one day. The thing is it’s the properties of the white spirit that creates the lovely gradients and flowy washes. Water has way to much surface tension to be able to do the same. But maybe with added flow improver or something 🤷🏼‍♂️

@@52Miniatures As I understand it, with water soluble paints, you can still use white spirits for thinning and thereby get the same benefits of normal oils. But you don't need to. I know that you can add "diskmedel" to the water when thinning heavy body acrylics and thus get almost oil washes/pinlining qualities. Shouldn't it be possible to do the same with water oils? It's something I plan on trying out when I get some. (-:

Very zen video and a hell of a paintjob. Haven't seen any other videos, so I take it the Mandalorian jingle was chosen because she'll be used as a bountry hunter?

Thanks Jonas :) That is music I made for a previous video (on Stargrave) and I keep reusing it every now and again.

@@52Miniatures Aah I understand. A painter and a musician :) Thematically I think Bosch was a nice choice, as he seems to be synonymous with apocalyptic Sci-Fi. At least he is mentioned quite a few times in the Hyperion Cantos and Expanse books.

Absolutely fantastic, as always. Great ideas on the inspiration from HB - how about some resin moulded minis based on the bizarre spawns in his paintings??
