Impressive paint finish! If memory serves me right, I knew these bikes when they were new, the paint finish was never that good when they left the factory!

Pleasure Anthony. I’m still buzzed about the outcome. Let’s all see what the bike looks like in the end!

Wow. That has to be better than factory finish. An enormous amount of work and it looks so good.

Thank you mrbxv you are probably right but I can’t get on with orange peel regardless. Yes it’s a slog but worth it as you say. Thanks for chipping in 👌

Nice job, mate! When I painted the Bikini-fairing of my LM3, I finally went with laserprojecting the outlines of the daylight-panel on the front. I wanted it to look straight from front and nicely curved from the side. I recognized to achieve this, you must not allign with the windscreen. Curving the tape by eye onlyw as a real pain in the ass. Please go on and make me happy with the final result. Greetings from germany _Stefan

Hi Stefan. Yours sounds very accurate indeed. I’ve seen many different original one though. I am guessing they used hand templates so mine is probably ok. Client is happy that’s the main thing 👍

I bought a new LeMans back in the day, and I can assure you that the factory finish was nothing like as spectacular as your fantastic effort! I will be very interested to see how the exhaust finish holds up....................mine went rusty within the first week!

Very interesting sir. I hope the paint holds up as you say. As owner of a restoration business I just can’t let it out with orange peel no matter what the manufacturer did in the day. The client saw the video and was best pleased. They turned out well considering the original state. Thanks for chipping in 👍

That looks amazing. I just did a rattle can paint job on an old Triumph tank. It was my first attempt at painting and I feel like it turned out pretty good. I didn't try to wet sand the paint even though there was some texture (orange peel) in it. I thought I could get rid of the texture after adding the 2K clear and then wet sanding and polishing. I got rid of a lot of it but I didn't know how much I could sand and buff without breaking through the clear coat layer, so there's places that could be better, but I left them alone. I was worried I'd get to the end of the project and ruin it by buffing or sanding too much. I might go back for another round of wet sand and polishing at some point in the future.

Hi Dave, you can always key the tank and add more 2k and see how you go. Breaking through is another video subject altogether. Thanks for sticking around 🙏

How did you position the edge of the black/red on the fuel tank? You applied the blue tape, but did you just free hand this edge or did you place the tape based on a measurement from some reference point?
@MyRestoration1
@MyRestoration1 Год назад
Yes I freehanded it. From what examples I’ve seen they are all a bit different so I’m guessing that was an ok way to do it. It really just follows the shape of the tank to make it easy. The trick is to lay the blue tape as I’ve shown on bikini fearing 👍

I was not impressed with the paint on my new series two 1978 Le Mans because it seemed to have a bit of orange in it. Had it redone with a deep glossy Italian red and it looks way better now. I do not miss the fluorescent orange on the front of the bikini fairing. The repaint may reduce the resale value but I don’t intend to sell the bike any time soon and I’m 73 years old.
