As you probably already picked up, Goblins are my FAVOURITE faction In Warhammer 40k, Age of Sigmar and well... everything else too!
And I've painted hundreds of them the same way for years. Green skin, pink noses, red mushrooms ... you get the picture.
Well in this video I'm going to change that and paint up a VERY special Goblin miniature using new paints, a new colour-scheme and new techniques in the hopes that it'll be my best miniature ever...

I'm considering a Chaos Chosen Blood Bowl team, Rainbow Coalition. Each player with have different colored armor. I'm not crazy enough to paint a rainbow on each player. 😁

You get a like for showing the "alternative way of shading" with such a nice educational visual example. I am myself stuck in the GW "base-wash-highlight/drybrush" way of thinking, so maybe I will have to try this (for me) new way of shading miniatures. In the video you also mention that you like to go ham when painting. It would be interesting to see a video where you go over rare or weird ways to paint your miniatures - like maybe using a sponge, wiping paint off, colorshift paints, and similar unconventional things.

I had purple swamp goblins in a homebrew D&D campaign I ran. They lived in roaming villages on the backs of giant turtles, they also worshipped an ancient black dragon.

Hell. Yes. One of my only warhammer regrets was allowing a guy at the local GW to persuade a much younger me that "orks are always green" as a response to bringing some grey-skinned orks I'd painted. I also agree there are some fundamental shading/highlight assumptions that deserve a second look. I've seen edge highlighting take a mini from WH40k to Tron too many times...

I would never have guessed purple goblins are so rare, it seems such a natural fit (though part of that might be caused by the paint skills on display in this video) I've seen many a blue goblin (both ice and night themed) and I thought purple would be a natural expansion from that point onward. Never realised it's opposite of green in the colour wheel thinghy and how that makes it logical if you hadn't explained it Also props for continuing this journey of upping your skills and being so open about it, definitely nice for someone like me, who is just starting in the hobby

My biggest challenge I actually find is that I'm pretty sure I'm declining as a miniature painter even though I spend more time painting than ever before. I almost never do projects anymore that push my skills or are aimed at being as nice as possible. Rather, I spend all my time pumping out high volume projects as rapidly as possible. (Though I would say I am getting surprisingly good at pumping out like 2000pts of models in 2 weeks that look good but skills like blending and edge highlighting are just rusting away and I was never good at them to begin with) By the way your paint job is incredible on this guy! Well done!

I really like the Mini and your paint job. The good thing about not being 100% happy about anything is it leaves you somewhere to go to improve. As for the NMM, I like where you went with it. The only thing I missed on it, was once you'd done the mushrooms I thought you'd go for a glowing magical frog. Kinda sad you didn't go that way as that would've fit your original description of the mini. However you were playing with new things so I'm sure it's given you ideas for the future as well and I do think you triumphed. 🙂

The fact that you have broken away from the base-wash-highlight painting style means that you are leaving the kiddie pool and taking your painting to the next level. my favourite goblin skin colour I ever did was a swamp gobber from Privateer Press, that I painted creamy white with small dark brown splotches on strategic places, came out looking much more froglike. I wanted to paint my nightgoblins that way too but they didn't have enough skin showing to really get the patterns so I just went Classic style except for the wizards. If I ever do a non-nightgoblin goblin army though, that scheme is definitely in the back of my mind at all times

Ummm, are you reading my mind? I was like "purple goblins would be cool" and I was thinking of the Royal Purple from the Pro Acryl signature line. Also, I did an airbrush volumetric highlight for a test blood angels scheme, before I decided to paint ultramarines, and it looked so much better imo. I think the mud between the stones on the base looked great

Yaas Queen! Preach. Washes have a use but I've been off washes for a long while. In addition to the inefficiencies you mentioned gravity doesn't put washes where shadows go, so it can make it harder to make the model look right.

That was one thing I always liked about the Rankin Bass animated Hobbit. The goblins were grey and looked different, Smaug had bat features and the Sylvan elves were primitive. Some of the goblins by Arthur Rackham (British Golden Age illustrator) are in this vein too. Its nice to get away from the modern GW/LotR/WoW look and feel sometimes.

Have you ever read a book called The Goblin Companion by Brian Froud & Terry Jones? Your miniatures really remind me of that kind of Labyrinth style. They look amazing either way!
