it’s sort of depressing because i completed my senior year of college last friday and not having the opportunity to show my family all that i have accomplished in four years has taken a toll on me. i did terribly average in high school so making it into college was amazing and i dedicated four years of my life to working extremely hard. i completed with a 3.8 gpa and graduating magna cum laude. i didn’t even receive my cap or gown :(. congrats to us though and the rest of class of 2020 for pushing through during this time.

CONGRATULATIONS DESJA!!!! I can’t imagine how disappointing and just ugh that must be! I was in the same boat and graduated last year. I hope you’ve been able to celebrate as much as you with that good good food and supportive company, and hopefully you get to celebrate more when all this is more over!

It’s also nice to see some RU-vidrs like Michelle doing something creative to compensate for cancelled events🥰 No one has been unaffected by the pandemic, but I do feel bad for the class of 2020 :( But your future years will treat you all well!💪🏻 Hope everyone is safe!

I am a senior in high school and I felt low key embarrassed going to a community college because everyone at my high school is going to a four year. But this video made me excited to go to a community college and not to be ashamed. Thanks Michelle :) You have a big sister vibe.

I've always disliked physics but in my 12th standard (India), I ended up enjoying it because of my tutor, he taught so simply and effortlessly, it made me feel like it was such an enjoyable subject and in my 12th board exams I ended up scoring 95 out of 100, so I guess a teacher plays a very important role in shaping your liking towards a subject.

'bcos i can get thru this degree, i feel like i can get thru anything' girl 😭 i had a hard time during my degree and master degree. i felt so hopeless and always thought i did so bad. i think that was the worst time of my life... when i heard this, i can now reassure that after this postgraduate career, i can get away with anything!

As a female finishing her last year of a Bachelors in Physics I can totally relate to what you've said about the sexism you've received, but it still makes me really angry to hear that you've experienced it too! People in my course assume I'm stupid because I like to dress nicer and wear makeup and I don't boast about my own grades like a lot of the people I've met. Once, I had to work with a guy for a group project in my second year and he asked me what I got in my first year exams after telling everyone his grade, and he was VERY obviously shocked that I got more in my exams than him and he wouldn't believe me when I said my grade. Feels good to finally see somebody talk about this on social media, so thank you for sharing! :D Wish you went to my university I can tell it would have been fun!

100% agree with knowing you can teach yourself just about anything after your degree. I graduated with a degree in Creative Writing, which is objectively useless in most people's eyes, but that's also the biggest thing I took away from my time in college. Learning how to learn is very important! It means that nothing is truly out of your reach if you're willing to put the time into understanding it.

Hi Michelle! I love hearing about your experience studying the never-ending secrets of the universe! I just graduated from theoretical Physics in Barcelona and agree with many things you say, like being totally prepared now to achieve whatever you want in life. I think that despite the difficulty and sometimes the suffering that studying Physics brings, it’s also a very beautiful and rewarding journey. One that will accompany us forever and make us stronger ✨ Though I think the social experience I had was pretty different from yours (we were quite a tight-knit and respectful community and supported each other a lot) I do find there is still a lack of women in science. Luckily, I’ve seen that more and more girls are taking up Physics each year, yay! 💪🏼 So thank you for making visible on the internet that everyone, despite of their background, can study Physics (or really, anything you set your mind to). Kudos from Barcelona!!!

"You are in control of your own destiny and you should not be afraid to exercise that power and that ability" Thank you Michelle for this video! Congrats on all your hard work! These words really comforted and inspired me to stop regretting and overthinking the choices I've made. Ever since lockdown I've been losing motivation academically as a student and mentally in my personal life, but I realized that I have the power in me to get up everyday and try my best. Keeping my mind and body moving has helped with avoiding the spirals of "what ifs" I tend to fall into when I'm at a low. Thank you for reminding me that I have the power and ability to make the most of life even in this quarantine!

Remembered how old I am when you mentioned you graduated hs in 2016 and how long ago that was (I’m class of ‘07 baby!) Although I recognize I’m not your target audience, I still find your content relatable and enjoying to watch. I hope that isn’t too weird. You should definitely be proud of yourself and your accomplishments! You’re so mature and I admire the drive you have at such a young age. I wish my younger self had chosen a similar path to yours but hey, that’s life. Hope to run into you someday, if you end up coming to SF. PS - shout out to any other early thirty somethings :)

THIS is exactly what i needed rn. Finding myself in a situation where I don’t know what to do next year; drop out or change major. I’m in my first year of uni and majoring in medical engineering and i feel so lost, i don’t enjoy the courses and feel so overwhelmed. I’ve always wanted to study physics or astrophysics but gave that up because a) i felt like i wasn’t “smart enough” to do so and b) because finding a well-paid job in engineering is much easier. As stupid as it sounds. But now after a year of struggling with having no motivation, the constant feeling of being in the wrong major the feeling of not knowing what to do in life has amplified. Always thought the “self-finding phase of a teenager” was just a made up exaggeration but boi was i wrong.

It’s interesting that you say you don’t like the sexual harassment and male dominance of the physics community but then say you would’ve chosen Computer Science in hindsight. I graduated in August 2019 with my BS in Computer Science and it is VERY much that environment. From what I experienced, and I actually prefer this, but as a woman in CS you have to be more outspoken and opinionated and headstrong with yourself to get your opinion across and to actually make a point. I was always the only girl in any group project and I had to kinda force my opinions into the conversation. I also had to change the way I was as a person since I’m more introverted and quiet and soft spoken. Any time I spoke to professors or other male peers I had to push that aside and come across as completely confident and outspoken. It’s just interesting you say that. You do have that drive for CS though I’ve noticed with pursuing web design and freelance graphic design. CS is a degree that you can never really stop learning because once you do you’ve automatically fallen behind with current/new tech

I agree. I'm a Computer Engineering major right now and I am very overwhelmed with what I should learn. I recently just did a presentation in my Database Systems class and the professor cut me off (by accident) when I was about to say my contributions to the project. But, it made me realize that I need to be more assertive as an introverted person.

This concept of male-dominated, gated world is very much a STEM thing, not just physics or CS. It also has a lot to do with your university and the students within the local community. The undergraduate and graduate environments are very different even at the same university.

Hey girl! Thanks for making this video and sharing your experiences with us. I'm also a college senior and I agree, it sucks how this time ended for us. We didn't get an opportunity to get closure on our time in college and there's just too much uncertainty with everything right now. I majored in computer engineering and what you said about feeling like you can learn/accomplish anything you set your mind to really resonated with me. I honestly feel the same way - my degree was so rigorous and challenging that I feel like I can handle any academic/career move. I'm also really sorry you experienced sexism/sexual harassment in school. You're right, STEM is still very much male-dominated and it's hard to sometimes be taken seriously if you don't fit the stereotypical engineer mold. I didn't encounter much sexism personally in school but I attribute that to the friends I made in my major. Anyways, congratulations on completing your degree!

Can someone explain to me what ''community college'' means? Like, is it different than universities or?? I'm from Spain, so I don't have a good grip at US education system. Like, what's the difference?
@jennymai1292
@jennymai1292 4 года назад
Community college is essentially a 2-year college that offers technical degrees, certificates, and associate degrees. It's cheaper than a university and often times, people go to community college because they don't want to spend thousands of dollars in a 4/5 year university (in Michelle's case, that's why she chose to go to a community college). Many students who go to a community college end up transferring to a university after 1 or 2 years. Hope this helps!
