I had a request on another video to do some French Line Infantry with Contrast Paints and have put this together. It is intended to be a stepwise guide to applying the Contrast Paint, as well as offering ideas on highlighting with acrylic paint to take the finish to the next level.

Thanks very much. Haven't tried Contrast Paints on 15mm myself. I'm sure they would work well.

Nice one..interesting to see. I grew up in the era where wargamers did not use fantasy paints, and i have never used a fantasy paint ever, but i may have to give these a try..

They are a novel tool, providing the base coat and shade in one. It is a small range of only around 30 colours, and they do naturally cater for the bright fantasy/sci-fi settings of Warhammer and its offspring, so precise authentic colour matching to uniforms is difficult. However, even a few paints to do whites, black and flesh alone could speed up the whole painting process, leaving "proper" colours for the important historical colours.

Have been using the contrasts for a few months myself and agree wholeheartedly with what you have said. They do do what the manufactures say they do and an extra bit of highlight here and there does wonders. Anothe good tool in the painting kit.

Their selling point is they are your base coat and shade in one bottle. Not so effective on flat surfaces and some colours work better than others though. Just like you said after your video, I have more paints than models it seems!

Very nice to see what result you can achieve with contrast paint! I love them for my 10mm, but wasn't so sure on 28mm yet. I think I'll give them a try to set up the first layers now!

nice ! i do think the pants are too dark . i know you're going for an on campaign lived in look but i think they should be closer to white . it's good to see how effective Contrast paints are on historical models , not just fantasy and sci-fi !
@CullodenPaintingStudio
@CullodenPaintingStudio 4 года назад
I do like my own minis that little bit grubbier. For the dress uniform look then Apothecary White for the breeches and Ultramarine Blue for the jackets would be good substitutions for the Skeleton Horde and Leviadon Blue. Not perfect, but the range is fairly limited at 30-ish paints. They definitely do lend themselves to historicals as well as sci-fi and fantasy though.

@@CullodenPaintingStudio I discovered just leave the Bone primer on the pants for my Austrians . And a Pale grey Wash from Vallejo to the jacket

Very helpful video. I'm still debating with myself about whether contrast paints would work for me and speed up my painting. I have heard of problems with a "coffee stain" effect on flat areas, did you experience this and if so how did you stop it? Thanks for sharing your experience.
@CullodenPaintingStudio
@CullodenPaintingStudio 4 года назад
Staining can be an issue. You can either do two coats, though you lose a lot of the depth of shade, or when applying one coat, start on a flat surface and move the brush to a recess. Doing so moves the bulk of the paint to an area that will have a deep shadow, and stop it drying in pools on flat surfaces.

Recently started using the Contrast paints on Warlord ECW figures, which have improved my painting speed and results. Just one question, what do you use to clean your paint brushes after using the Contrast paints?
@CullodenPaintingStudio
@CullodenPaintingStudio 2 года назад
I have some "Masters Brush Cleaner and Preserver" which I use at the end of a painting session. It's great stuff, but some washing up liquid is a cheap and readily available alternative.

@@CullodenPaintingStudio Chain mail is more like the old GW boltgun metal , SW Grey looks a little too light?
@CullodenPaintingStudio
@CullodenPaintingStudio 4 года назад
Yeah that's fair. Basilicanum Grey is darker, and perhaps if that was used for the deeper areas you'd get close to the old chainmail look. Having some Contrast Medium to hand would let you blend between the two if you are feeling particularly adventurous and want to go down the non-metallic metal route.
