In this video, I’ll be showing you how to paint a smoky, moody background in two different ways. This is a great technique for beginners and up!
Verbal instruction in this painting video!! You guys have asked for it, and who am I to deny you? I'll walk you through two different backgrounds, step-by-step.
I’m painting on a 12x16 stretched canvas, but you can paint on any type and size of canvas you like.
The brushes I use are:
• A 1 inch flat brush in the first segment
• A 3/4 inch natural hair round brush in the second segment
I’m using Liquitex Basics paints in the following colors:
• Titanium White
• Mars Black
• Burnt Umber
But feel free to experiment with your colors!

This is the best artist I’ve seen teaching the process. Excellent communication on exactly how she’s using the brush and picking up the colors. Also how she blends it. So grateful I came across you. My first time seeing you. I’m subscribing for more educational videos. Thank you

I truly enjoyed this session. Jane, I find your instruction method far better than any that I've seen on the Internet. I like the way you lay down the objectives of what you are going to teach us. I also like how you set the road map and manage our expectation right off the bat. I hope that you had a Merry Christmas and wish you the best for the 2018 New Year.

Thank you for a wonderful tutorial. I am a newbie and feel like I can paint the Cattails, the Midnight Raven, and the Awaken At Dusk. I believe this tutorial will be very helpful in backgrounds. The second was new to me and I plan to use it with the d. Purple for a Halloween painting I want to do. Please continue to put great painting tutorials up with fun stuff that looks amazing and is basic enough for beginning painters.

Hi, I like your work, your calm voice and way of teaching. I am a beginner, I want to paint a rose in white and pink, but my question is about background. If I want to do let's say a sunset one, is it possible, would it effect the main image? I saw some artist paint around the image drawn by pencil for example but I feel that this is not for me as a beginner, I need to go with my brush freely from one side to another blending colours. Please give an advice about backgrounds for images, if not so much to ask. Thank you in advance for your reply and time. Best wishes.

Hi Jane! Quick question, in the video it says we can try this with any other colors too, which is great because I actually want to do a smoky green fog type of effect, but I am unsure of which colors or shade to use ? Because for this one you used white, black, and brown... but what other two colors do I use if I'm doing it with green? Love the video and your page btw! ❤️

Hello and thank you very much for a nice and educational video. You are really talented. I have a question: You have already created a beautiful foundation for the top coate, most likely to create depth effect, but in the video it appears that most of the foundations are hidden by the coate with gesso. I understand the importance of gesso in view of the technique you use in the final top coate, which really gets a beautiful result, but are there alternatives? What about using gesso first, (Most likely, it loses its effect on process 2) what about using a transparent edition with gesso? Sincerely David @junker_studioart

I realize this video goes back a few years, but just wanted to say while I love all of your painting, the music is extremely depressing. I watch many artists' videos and what ruins a good video is the music. I would rather have no music actually and just your beautiful voice. Please know I am not saying this to be mean just helpful. Thank you.

(about the second technique) I want to do this on my wall but I want it to be extra dark and smokey, mostly black, do you think this technique would work out as well as this if mostly black was to be used? I am usually the type to try it out myself instead of asking questions however in this case its a lot of money for me to lose if I fuck up lol, I will try it on a bit of board but I would really value your opinion or any tips if you have some for using mostly black, I have been searching for weeks for the perfect technique to make my desired outcome and although I am sure this will hurt my arm like a bitch I still want it because its so beautiful

I don't understand how the paint stays wet as you circle around the canvas. I would have had to spray some water ....a mist...on the canvas for sure. Perhaps you used a retarder in the paint, although I didn't see that. The scrub brush technique is something I would use as well as the mop brush to create a soft blend for my upcoming abstract background painting. Good lesson here. the way you don't rush anything.

Hi Jane...I'm worried about the parts of it drying while I'm working on it, would it be ok to put on a thin coat of retarder and gel medium on the canvas before applying the paint? Love your videos...I'm learning a lot.
@PaintingwithJane
@PaintingwithJane 7 лет назад
Thank you, Dave! If you're doing the blended one that I did with the flat brush, yes, that would work fine. For the scrubbing one, the retarder would make the paint blend too much, and then you'd probably end up with a mess. Part of the reason I like to do the scrubbing is because it does make the paint thin so it dries faster. This helps layer the colors rather than just blending them together. But try it both ways and see what you think!

Could have started working it towards the bottom have of a face at 19:42. At that point it looks like you’re putting a turtleneck on a person.

Could you tell me specifically what is the maker of the brush you use to scrub with. All of mine seem to fall apart and the hairs come out and I cant get them out of the painting. Thanks

I just found you. OMG...I'm gonna learn so much! I started with fluid art 4 years ago, and now I want to branch out...I'm so lucky to have searched for just the right words! Yay for me!
