Matt love your videos and your channel. Got many cool tips greatly appreciated!! I must call a foul, on your video here. Mineral spirits contain oil. Best to use acetone or even brake cleaner. Rotate that paper towel until there is no more black coming off the steel. Prep is everything for a good bond. Thanks again BleepinJeep!!!
Just my 2 cents. You should start painting the edges first. Because all the overspray you create from covering the edges you will cover after you paint the main portion
Process is dead on but you're gonna wanna use a tougher 2k epoxy primer especially on something like an offroad bumper where it has to stand up to a lot unless you're the type to just reshoot all the time otherwise great step by step video
When painting with spraycans a common mistake is that painter keep can too far from targeted surface. Its understandable to do like that as being careful or if using "many thin layers" method. Of course if u keep distance between 15-25cm, its more difficult to avoid runs/runoffs. But that is the distance that you get smoother and better looking surface. If you double that painting distance ( or somewhere 30cm), the paint not going to settle like it meant to do. With too far distance you get "mandarin skin" and other similar issues.
You can also use those halogen work lights to bake the paint on when you're done. And old friend of mine had an old electric oven in their shop they would use to bake small parts they painted.
I kept waiting for you to grab a real gun and git her done. 2 pack clear is the best way to seal I reckon. Never found anything better. Unless it's a 2 part, it takes forever to dry hard. But, for the casual guy who likes rolling ball bearings in a can, nice vid.
Rattle can paint ? Mineral spirits for cleaning? If you're going to do this at least use the right cleaning chemicals and then appliance epoxy. Regular spray paint is too soft and the finish is mediocre. Appliance epoxy is much tougher and the finish is far better. And to improve your spray can control buy a $2 handle adaptor. An HPLV will make your paint job 100x better ... hard to believe you fab this bumper and spray it with a can... If I bought it I would be bummed when it started rusting in a few months.
I see that you hung the part by wire which makes it easier. What do you about the areas where the part is touching the wire. When you finish and take the part down you will have tiny areas of unpainted bare metal where the part was resting on the wire. What is the best way to avoid this short of letting your coats dry and repainting the area where the wire was.
The only way is to suspend it where the sun don't shine --- I mean where the paint don't need to be. Otherwise you have to fix-it-up afterward or perhaps suspend from a suitable location that is less visible.
Nice tutorial. Mineral spirits contain petroleum distillates which will remain on the surface and prevent good adhesion. You are better off using a wax and grease remover to wipe down before paint. Otherwise, great video!
*Can I paint ‘Mild’ Steel with this method and the paint you used? Is it safe and correct?* Actually I have to paint Mild Steel table (with 4 legs and flat surface) of half ton made up of angle mild steel bars welded with each other. I want the paint to last for about 5 years or more without scratches and all. Moreover *I also want to protect my Mild Steel table from rusting.*
which material did you use after sand cleaning the metal ? is it mandatory all the time ? do you know any reference or standards to paint ferous metals ?
I have had no luck with spray paint holding up. Seems like it scratches too easy. Im looking for somethings that better, nkt the stuff with staibless steel dust that like 600 dollars a gallon lol
Hey Matt thank you for the feedback from yesterday I have red dust all over the undercarriage of my a Cherokee do you think that might be affecting my fuel filter
Hi, I know this video is a year old but I have a quick question. I have a bumper that came black (came on my jeep when I bought it). How should I approach this if I want to repaint it? Should I sand down to bare metal? Or just paint over it. Any help is appreciated. Thanks!
I'm about ready to cry lol. I spent hours sanding my axle down to bare metal in every little crevice. Degreaser it then put two coats of rustoleum primer then let dry overnight. Woke up and went to start painting and noticed a scratch. Then took my fingernail and tried to scratch it and it peeled down to metal...I don't know why but I'm pissed
rxz4140 sorta, I went ahead and just put it in and after about another week(3 weeks total since last coat) it was finally dry. Putting it in tore the paint up a lot but I'm gonna sand and repaint those parts. I believe the humidity was preventing it from curing
@@Ben-lo7cy normally down to trapping the solvent between layers either because they weren't left long enough to dry between coats or were too thick. From my experience, the coats were too thick and paint takes weeks to dry properly even when using almost transparent layers and sanding back. I've painted with loads of different spray paints and found this issue with all of them. In the end the last project it had months to dry and that is as solid as a rock.
Vic L. -Self-etching primer , if I remember correctly, seems to etch, or penetrate into the metal, making a stronger bond. What I don't know is: must we sand it before painting or spray paint over it before it dries out completely. Anybody help. thanks.
If someone is going to spend alot of money on a bumper then someone should not paint it like that, Learn how to paint it correctly if you are going to do a video. This is not the way the bumper should be prepped or primed or painted if you want it to last. This is such a do it your self crappy way to paint.
@@bleepinjeep if you dont have a paint booth and you cant use a paint gun with the correct products it will not last but you cant use 2k primer in a can and 2k paint in a can you can get these products from an auto paint store and at least the job will last longer, stop using the crap that you are using, take the advice of a painter that has 43 years experience. try it my way and you will like it much better. then do another video. metal prep, etch prime, 2k prime, sand, wipe and tac off, then 2k paint. its a much better way and it will last.
