Are you just starting out and need to learn how to prep a classic truck or antique car for paint? This is the video for you!!!
In this episode, I'm going to show you how to remove stubborn paint and primer. We will cover different techniques for paint removal including the use of stripping disks, sandpaper, roloc discs, chemical strippers, wire wheels and sandblasters. We will talk about mechanical vs chemical stripping of automotive paint.
Once I have the 1971 Chevrolet truck down to bare metal, we will cover rust conversion and sand blasting rust. Then we will cover the proper way to clean bare metal for primer application in my DIY paint booth! Russ from Double R Restoration and I will go into the pros and cons of self etching primer and epoxy primer.

What painting project brought you to this video?
@bowtiebuilding

1984 square body. Wondering how deep into paint I want to try to go. I don’t want to have to go to the metal but I’m going to have to replace rocker/cab corner so maybe I need to 🤔. A lot of work but it’s a single cab so not too bad. Great how to bro. I’d be doing all my painting out in the open

@bowtiebuilding nice dude. You can always hit it with 80 grit and then lay down your primer but it really depends on how many layers of paint and was there body work done at some point before you? Because if the last person did improper prep or just slapped Bondo into rust, that will show its ugly head eventually. My buddy back in high school had this beautiful white 66 442 and after about two to three years everything started bubbling up on that thing from shotty body work.

There is a new chemical paint stripper I think you will be amazed with. From New Zealand, "Coopers Strip Club" that sells a two part spray in pump bottles. They have RU-vid videos you have to see. They sell kits or large 5 liter refills of both. First is a stripper that can sting bare arms so PPE and use their cream each application. Like any stripper, the more layers, the more used, but this is a mist to keep you panel wet, depending on Ford Enamels or GM Laquer or a base/clear still works. The have a dense steel wool they have made, but works the same. Once bare, bottle spray their "Flusher" to neutralize what ever is left behind. Since a thin spray, it is not a thick goo with paint to clean off floors but there is cleaning to do. Yours will vary. But I would buy the refills (2) and give a try. No shipping, website all one word, no extra ph #'s to dial outside the country and the inventors wife answers the phone & extremely knowledgeable. Just an alternative since the EPA is soo smart and took our Methylene Chrloride out of air craft stripper but they can't account for where the waist goes. They tell you that 41 people have passed from 1976 to 2009 is the reason but 1,956 children died of gum balls & small toys as choking hazards. Sad, true. But the government knows what is best all the time like $5 dollar gas, $8 bacon but they still sell turkey fryers! DK, ASE master since 78, retired.
@TOMVUTHEPIMP
@TOMVUTHEPIMP Год назад
Yes, it works. But it will cost you about $1000 to strip your truck. I can strip my truck in a day with $50 in sanding disks. Coopers is good for tight, hard to reach areas. Not stripping whole vehicles.
@deankay4434
@deankay4434 Год назад
@@TOMVUTHEPIMP Two large refills will strip two full sized trucks. Yes, it is made to remove base / clean from entire vehicle and I spent $250 and stripped entire 1967 C10 long bed, inside bed and inside cab. Easy, type in coppers strip club on you tube and watch any number of their videos. Besides, $50 won't get you enough sandpaper to do a hood & one fender. Buy the 3M Cubitron 80 grit at $1.98 per sheet for 6" DA. I will spray Coopers with long sleeve all day with no dust! Filter cost money to and not N95.

I thought I was the only one that had Fast Etch do that. I wasted so much time re applying it and trying to wash it off with their pre painting prep and it always left that residue. I ended up sand blasting my k10’s cab just to get the fast etch off.

If I ever did use it again I would probably use it on a smaller area but yeah as you know that was a complete nightmare. When I talked to Eastwood they said something about a phosphorus residue that is easily washed off which obviously wasn't the case.

I used the strip it disc with an angle grinder to strip all the paint off of my hood and cab roof to bare metal. The trick is to constantly keep it moving. Don't stay in one spot at all. I didn't warp anything.You can feel the temp with your hand like you did and it never got past warm on me. The paint stripper was only taking the paint off in layers. I got frustrated so I just popped on my headphones, put some music on and got it done with the angle grinder. Just my .02 cents

Hello, If you go to bare metal with stripping disc for whole truck , do you need to go over again with like 80grit with DA? And how long can you keep truck outside when you go to bare metal? My k5 doesn’t fit into my garage . I was going to make a DIY tent paint booth outside. Thanks
@BustedClassicGarage
@BustedClassicGarage 11 месяцев назад
Depends on if the stripping disks leave scratches or marks. I would check with the primer's instructions on what your prep should be before paint. As far as rust it really just depends on humidity and the elements. I've left my truck in primer for months and it did flash rust a little bit but nothing crazy. If you do strip the truck and it sits out there let's say for a couple weeks before you go paint I would just hit it with the DA at 80 or whatever the instructions say just a knock off the flash rust.

Question- how long do you have on bare metal before flash rust starts to happen? In a hot dry area like Las Vegas?
@BustedClassicGarage

It really depends. I've left panels in bare metal for months with barely any surface rust afterwards. Good practice is if you do end up leaving it in bare metal always resand it before applying primer.

@TOMVUTHEPIMP
@TOMVUTHEPIMP Год назад
Classic vehicles need to be stripped to bare metal. They use lacquer. Nothing is going to stick to it no matter what you do or what some salesman tells you. You will have reactions or half your paint will come off in a car wash. Modern paint stripper in the US DONT work. The EPA removed the active ingredient.

Epoxy primer? Dangerous as hell due to isocyanates that cannot be filtered out. Most DIY’ers don’t have the right safety equipment to use any 2 part primer or paint.
