Karlyn shows how she turns an old painting into a new watercolor painting by using gesso. Watercolor on gesso. See some of the fun aspects of painting on this unique surface.
I definitely look forward to this! I am about to try gesso for the first time using acrylic but I usually use watercolor. Happy that I can try something new with my watercolours!
Love the free way with which you paint and your enthusiasm for painting is contagious! Just bought some Gesso and am looking forward to its arrival to workover some "old dogs" myself. Funny thing is I almost threw them out a couple of days ago! Now, I can repurpose those "dogs" and let them help me paint with some new "tricks!" Thanks for teaching this old dog some new tricks! xx
You Are One Of The Most Generous, Knowledgeable Watercolorists I Have Had The Joy Of Experiencing❣️ Most Importantly, Your Excitement And Welcoming Outlook Is Inspiring❣️ Thank You, Karolyn❣️ I would like to know if any of the watercolor grounds give you the beautiful blooming effects that watercolor paper does? 💐
This video shows painting on an acrylic gesso, but have had a lot of fun painting on watercolor coldpress ground from QOR. Though it is not exactly like paper and the watercolor doesn't quite flow as you'd expect, I have found it to be a fun new surface to play with. I am currently having fun with Acrylic Gesso. Thank you for your lovely comments!
Karlyn, i love your work!! So beautiful and inspiring. have you worked on gessoed masonite? I'm doing a very large piece and trying to decide whether i'll use wrapped canvas with gesso or a watercolor ground, or if i'll use the masonite. Also, varnishing tips. I saw you use the wax and the Krylon uv resistant clear coat. Do you have a suggestion on the smartist option? Thank you, Lynne
Are the sheets your using paper or canvas? I absolutely love your work, I just started doing watercolors and I'm learning so much, even though I've been an artist for over 50 years and have used so many other mediums 😁
I really love your videos but the sound level on this one is pretty low even with all the volume controls on the video and my computer turned up high. It would be very helpful in the future if you could make sure your mike is turned up high and positioned so it is picking up your voice well. Thank you!
I have never thought of putting gesso on watercolor paper before! So I am assuming that when your painting is finished you really need to put on some finishing fixative to seal it ?
I usually mat, frame and put them behind glass to protect them. You can spray on a UV resistant coating or I also use Dorland's Wax. I also always keep my paintings in clear sleeves to protect them.
I started experimenting with watercolor ground. I'm wondering if the ground would accept the watercolor more so than the gesso would and hence a difference in lifting. I will have to try that. Thank you for the info and your paintings are amazing!!!
Have fun with the watercolor ground. Cold press watercolor ground by QOR has worked the best for us. Though it is not exactly like paper and the watercolor doesn't quite flow as you'd expect, I have found it to be a fun new surface to play with. Maybe you've seen it, but if not, please check out our video about cold press ground here: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE--sBxZRGF1tg.html
I have seen that video but went back and watched it again! It was well worth a 2nd viewing - thank you. It was very helpful. I love how you try all kinds of things with joy and abandon! I haven't tried the QOR brand, I only tried Daniel Smith and on paper. I sometimes like the variety of texture it creates.
You refer to an “old dog” but what are you referring to? I think it’s an older painting that is repurposed again?. Your style of painting has given me new life and creativity to my watercolor paintings.Thank you for sharing your amazing talent and videos. Also, do you have any other new books out?🎨
Yes, an "old dog" is a past painting you are happy to paint over and make new! Check out the online course karlynholman.com/keeping-karlyn-ecourse/ for the newest material.
