Cool Forgotten Weapons merch! shop.bbtv.com/c...
John Rigby founded his unmaking company in 1775, and it continues to exist making fine rifles and shotguns to this day. He himself died in 1818, passing the business on to his son William, who was joined by John II (John Junior?) in the 1820s. During that time, they made not just rifles and shotguns but also a variety of pocket pistols for self defense at shops in both London and Dublin.
This pair is an interesting and unorthodox example of the type, with three barrels on each and a rotating striker on the hammer to select which barrel to fire. The selector rotates only clockwise, preventing the possibility of accidentally returning to a previously fired barrel under stress. The triggers fold up when the hammer is not cocked, preventing them from catching in a pocket and removing the need for a bulky trigger guard.

The star shaped rifling you are talking about is actually a register point for a key,so you can screw off the barrels to load them.These pistols actually load at the breech.They are not muzzleloaders ,that is why the barrels are numbered.

I think that those are screw-barrel pistols. The large spline at the muzzle is used to insert a tool to aid in unscrewing the barrel and then you load the pistol from the breech. The barrels are numbered for the convenience of the user. The steel butts may indicate that this guns were made for someone in Scotland, where steel butts were popular

The nipple on barrel 4 seems to be quite a bit more worn the the other two and the one on 6 seems least worn. The original owner likely didn't need many follow up shots, I'd guess? Or, maybe, lots of practice with #4 and less with the other two barrels. It would be pretty interesting if we could know about the life of the person who carried these!

@robbiemer8178
@robbiemer8178 6 лет назад
Now that you point it out, yes it is pretty clearly different from the other two. And, if one pauses at 2:51, the condition of the nipples is a bit easier to see and I agree about not seeing any difference between 5 and 6. I think what I was seeing as "wear" and what appeared to me to be differences in the size of the holes in the nipples was more a function of how the light is reflecting off them. Also, I have since looked at the RIA catalog page and in their good photos of those nipples, it is very clear that there is not much wear to any of them and #4 is a different design. Thee other pistol has somewhat different nipples on each of its barrels, too. So, I can only rescind my harebrained theory about more wear--nothing to support that idea in the photos.

For the time before industrialization and standardization these guns show a ridiculous level of precision and craftsmanship, above and beyond the engraving and finish! Some gunsmith must have spent many months on each gun to get them to this level of clockwork-like action... even by modern standards that under-folding trigger is something most manufacturers cannot get completely right. I can't imagine how many potatoes that must have cost an Irishman back in the day compared to a regular salary at the time...

Is it possible that the large hole in the grip was to slip your pinky finger through? There are "bird and trout" knives which have a handle like that so the user can let go of the knife and make use of his hand while the knife dangles from the pinky. Not sure why you'd need that on a pistol (plus the weight of the gun and the geometry of the whole might not allow for it), but the similar shape made me wonder. And there's the related question of whether the hole might let these function as brass knuckles or something similar.

Dublin had a good few gunmakers year ago, they were usually at the higher end of the market, as the lower end was supplied by the Birmingham and Liege trade guns. As for Dublin having a lot of crime at the time...............nothing has changed, but you cannot use a pistol to defend yourself now.

I see I'm late with this, but the trigger style and shape of the gun in general, especially the angled "pipe" connecting the percussion cap nipple to the barrel immediately reminded me of another gun I've seen before, and it took a while to find it. I think what this Rigby gun may be is a triple-barrel take on the Pedersoli screw barrel pistol shown here: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-zS-5TBn1muU.html In that case, the star shape may be there to allow a tool to be fitted to aid in removing the barrels because the configuration makes it difficult to unscrew the barrels by hand as already mentioned by others in the comments here. The numbering is necessary to make sure each barrel returns to the appropriate chamber after reloading.
