Hey buddy I'm sure you have heard this from many people before, but you sound just like Robert Downey jr. Not just the tone of your voice, but the way you enunciate as well!!!! Great video and always fun to listen to a celebrity wrenching on his bike, hahaha!!! Ride safe brother!!!!

This is so interesting, Rod. Years ago, I was having some headwork done to a big block Chevy. These fellows did heads for GM for different projects. I remember seeing heads bagged and marked "Darrell Waltrip", a NASCAR driver at the time. When I went to pick up my heads, a GM engineer happened to be there and I was able to listen to their conversation for a bit. My big takeaway was this: The engineer explained that when GM and the other American manufacturers needed to "clean up" the emissions from their power plants, they were behind the curve. So, an easy solution was to install an air pump (smog pump) and inject air into the exhaust. This didn't really make the exhaust any cleaner, but increased the total exhaust volume. Thereby "reducing" the percentage of bad gases in the tailpipe. If I remember correctly, that conversation was 40 years ago. I have a '98 VFR, 49 state bike, no cat, no sensors. I can't see any reason to delete the pair valve. Agreed?

Hi Jeff, the PAIR valve does nothing for performance so you are correct in that by deleting it you gain nothing. I get into a little more detail in a later video I did with an ST1300. You can see that one, I've cued up the PAIR valve part for you here ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-HE3_h2I_rK8.html Thanks for the feedback & the view!

Thank you so much for the video and explaining the pair valve system. I have kawasaki 2016 z800 and recently i installed two brothers slip on exhaust. The exhaust system on z800 is designed in such a way that if i want to change slipon exhaust the exhaust collector box comes with it. Catalytic convertor and o2 sensor and oem headers remains in place. So i chnged the slipon but since then when i deaccelerate , i hear some decel pop sounds from exhaust. i dont know if this is something i need to worry about or if it would hurt the bike in anyway. Ps. I havent touched the pair valve yet.
@RodRidesWrenches
@RodRidesWrenches 3 года назад
The sound you hear is nothing to worry about it happens anytime you install a less restrictive exhaust. It was happening before but you could not hear it because of the baffling and restricted exhaust airflow of stock exhaust. If you have unburnt fuel shooting flames out of your exhaust or popping after you shut off the bike, then you have a problem, otherwise enjoy the growl and setting off those car alarms! Remember if the catalytic converter is still in place on your bike you can leave the PAIR alone, it is better for your bike and the environment. The additional air at idle the PAIR provides will help and not hinder.
@pedroc6823
@pedroc6823 Год назад
This effected my ST1300 it dropped the idle from 1000 to around 900 I was afraid it would stall. It did change some popping to a very light puff kinda but not a popping. I thing instead of blocking it maybe reduce the air going through it.

I'm so glad I watched this. I'm about to put on a full exhaust and was wondering if I should block off the pair valve system because I heard keeping it can cause backfiring in the exhaust. I wasn't aware that it would make my bike appear to be running lean. If that is the case, would it make my bike start to run rich based off of false info?
@RodRidesWrenches
@RodRidesWrenches 3 года назад
If you're putting a full exhaust on your bike (header/collector/muffler) to get the most out of it you should us a Power Commander or other fuel MAP tool to dial in. PC website may even have your exact exhaust on a MAP you can download for the VFR. To answer your question, yes if the O2 sensors see lean then it will tell the injectors to run richer. Remember the PAIR Valve only works at lower RPM so Idle to about 5000RPM is where the difference will be, above that the PAIR Valve closes so no additional air is being pumped into the exhaust system.

Well with the pair valve on the exhaust and valve they run hotter without they run cooler so there is in part a reason to delete the pair valve

Great video. I have an 09 vfr800 with original exhaust and cat. When doing slow speed riding and using the clutch i get a really annoying vacuum popping sound from the pair valve. I removed the electrical plug from the valve and the popping stopped. The bike was also way smoother to ride. But is that maybe harmful to the cat and bike?
@RodRidesWrenches
@RodRidesWrenches Год назад
Let me ask you something, has the snorkel been removed and the flapper valve been disconnected? They make the bike noisy at low RPM. If your air box and PAIR is properly hooked up and working I do not see how this would make any sound you could hear. Also there has been some people claiming they have routed their crankcase vent to the PAIR valve. This is so stupid it is funny. Check your lines and make sure this is not the case. I don't think it can be easily done on the VFR but where there is an idiot there is a way. Doing something like this will make your engine sound different at higher RPM. Good Luck!

BTW with the PAIR valve electronically unplugged. I am pretty sure it is now in the open position. By default the solenoid is open so disconnecting power leaves it in this position.

Hi I have a 98 vfr800 5th gen, no 02 sensors, no Cat, I want to disable the pair system on my bike, can't see the point of it being there, I have an aftermarket end can and it 'pops' when I shut off the throttle whilst riding, anyway wouldn't just unplugging the electrical feed to the pair solenoid do the trick and if not why? getting to the paoir valve on the 5th gen is much harder to access being at the front of the airbox, up behind the oil cooler, great vid, subbed.
@RodRidesWrenches
@RodRidesWrenches 3 года назад
Sounds like that makes a lot of sense. With no cat converter the PAIR system just pumps air into the exhaust to fool emissions.

I have a 98 too and I removed the whole pair system when I had to pull the injectors for cleaning, it would be a pair otherwise but I like the simplification of the system now. I just bought silicone caps on Amazon and blocked all the whole with them.

I want to ask a question about how most bikes handle crank case ventilation. I have a 2008 gsx 1300 and can't find much on the subject. Some guys are saying the pair valve is part of the the crankcase ventilation as well on this bike.

The PAIR only routs between the air box and the exhaust. Most motorcycles have a crank vent on top the crank case. On your engine there is a square crank vent fitted beside your starter. There may also be a plastic oil catch (depends on year) with hoses linked to this breather.

Do you need to blank the check valves and reroute the front crankcase breather back to the Airbox?
@RodRidesWrenches
@RodRidesWrenches 2 года назад
There is no point in doing this mod. That's the point. No the crank breather is completely unrelated. No you do not have to blank the inlets.

The pair valve is the exact same thing as an air pump on a car, when the engine is cold it needs more air in the exhaust for a complete burn if running a cat converter...until the cpu reaches closed loop, then it shuts off. I know very stupid, it really isn't needed on a motorcycle, neither is the cat.

@RodRidesWrenches

I would not bypass the pair without removing the catalytic converter. The pair does not affect power in any way. Will it hurt your bike to bypass it? No. It just doesn't gain you anything performance wise. It may also burn out your factory catalyst over time.

I have a leak in the exhaust lines of 2 solenoid valves on my motorcycle. As a result, all eight exhaust valves are covered with white powder. May I ask for a solution to the problem?
@RodRidesWrenches
@RodRidesWrenches 2 года назад
The white powder on the exhaust valves is a general indication of excess engine oil in the combustion chamber. This is not the only answer though as some fuel additives can leave deposits that are white. Are you looking through the exhaust manifold opening or have you removed the cylinder head? It is unlikely this is a result of issues with the PAIR since PAIR only adds air after the combustion chamber. If the engine crankcase was overfilled, the excess oil would have came back through the crankcase vent into the air box. How oily is your airbox?

My bike has a pair valve and no cat. So your wrong. Not every fuel injection system adds fuel when it's cold for warm up.
@RodRidesWrenches
@RodRidesWrenches 4 месяца назад
No, your bike is carbureted or has a open loop fuel injection system (old style). The pair is providing fresh air to burn excess fuel in your exhaust system. WHICH IS WHAT I SAID!
