Line up 10 different famous drummer’s set up next to Daru’s and you probably can’t tell the owner of at least half of those kits. I promise, however, you would be able to identify Daru’s rig. Is this setup for everyone, no, but then your drums should reflect your personality and playing philosophy. Guiliana rarely, if ever, uses rack toms. Does that somehow delegitimize his playing. I roadied for the great teacher/player Gary Chaffee who, as a jazz drummer, didn’t use toms, floor or rack, at all and only chinas, no rides/crashes. I’ll tell you those were ligit jazz gigs and no one thought otherwise. You do you and let your music speak for itself. Peace.
