The Kachi Canal project, is one of the largest mega projects in the world of it's kind, a grand canal with some pretty insane engineering. How do they plan to build this giga project, today we explore some of the construction techniques and the problems this canal is meant to solve for Pakistan.

Pakistan would do well to emulate India's example with (thier) version & which California is in the process of copying by covering the canal with solar panels. It serves a triple purpose, namely that of evaporation reduction, assists with scarcity of electricity - particularly in rural areas - and acts to stimulate the overall economy in the regions that have a (reliable) clean sustainable electricity supply, something that's increasingly important as climate change gathers apace.
@geographymust8984
@geographymust8984 Месяц назад
What do you want say? BTW it would be not possible for Pakistan (Not in current state) to fund 499 Kilometers of Solar panels. Plus, their maintains cost and batteries to store too.
@AliSherrr
@AliSherrr Месяц назад
Even though such projects are good for overall growth but I don't see any benefit at over the extra cost of such endeavor. Pakistan already produces alot more electricity than it consumes. The issue is, Pakistan has outdated electricity distribution network and hence alot of line loses. Secondly, Pakistan did alot of agreements in a bid to increase electricity production in 90s and 2000s that have come back to bit us recently. Pakistan pays these companies what is known as capacity payment i.e not the actual electricity a plant supplies but rather what its total capacity is. These agreements were not an issue when Pakistani economy was expected to outgrow the production by now but because of war on terrorism and other factors that has not happened on a scale government expected. Hence alot more expensive electricity than it should be. Pakistan can use this money instead to upgrade its distribution network and hence encourage industries to use more electricity.

@pinkelephants1421
@pinkelephants1421 29 дней назад
@@AliSherrr That is really interesting and extremely helpful. So many replies in the comments section, irrespective of the topic being discussed, are often instantly dismissive, frequently aggressive for no good reason, and (appear) not to be knowledge based. I didn't think it would make sense for the (entire) canal network to be part of a solar array, merely those sections whereby the main grid is either not present or only insufficient. I fully take onboard your points but there are several other aspects which could make a big difference to people's quality of life. One is public health, particularly that of women and children. Indoor cooking in the less affluent areas of the world usually means burning stuff. This means that particulates are inhaled often leading to respiratory diseases. Particulates have now been shown to cross the cell wall, entering into the bloodstream, ending up in virtually every organ in the body, including placentas and brain tissue with long-term repercussions remaining unclear. With indoor cooking using combustion in these households, there are often issues with eye diseases. Wherever work has been done on improving cooking conditions, either by NGO's, UN, or government led initiatives, almost all beneficiaries express improvements in their health. So, potentially, having good, reliable, cheap access to an electricity supply, could form a crucial component of public health policy; it's a matter of political will. I'm not suggesting or advocating for fancy high end appliances, but there's plenty of solid, easily repairable basic cooktops and small ovens that could make a huge difference to people's health, as could refrigeration, especially in rural areas where healthcare may difficult to access or be altogether non-existent. From an environmental viewpoint, tree cover, so important in dealing with climate change, could be expanded since harvesting for charcoal would decrease. As less would be needed for burning, quick growing trees could also be planted to provide animal fodder. Soil erosion, flood control, and a greater availability of construction materials for housing for example, would also extend from the premise of additional solar power. The potential transformational benefits of solar are enormous, even reaching as far as a means to power cheap transportation via EVs; electric tuk tuk's in India are a huge hit with their owners. In other words, originally, I was trying to think of it in a holistic manner. Reliable electrical supplies are so much more than just being able to plug in; the societal benefits are huge. I hope this is useful by providing context. Thanks for taking the time to reply to me and provide me with a learning opportunity. 👍😊

This canal will help develop a new method of delivering water to higher than Indus basin arid zones, that is pumping. However, rather than using electricity, we may experiment with co-processing pumps i.e. a water turbine and a pump driven by the water turbine mounted on the same shaft. The output of the pump would perhaps be just 5% of the water flowing through the turbine but it may pump water under very high pressure to several thousand feet higher areas (delivered through steel pipes). Let's put mighty Indus to work.

The information can be found on internet. Further the indus river itself is flowing extremely low. The life along Indus river sides has drastically changed.
