“Countries that are defeated by their enemies often rebuild. But the countries that are destroyed from within-that's really the end of the line.” ― Stephen Kotkin
Atif, would you come back and fix us if given again the opportunity,I know what happened with you but still... also thank you for giving us this awareness
Atif Mian spoke about taking a stsnd even if in the shoft term it can have negative consequences. In context of Asia Cup and hosting rightz. I agree with him. They coukd not have persuaded India to cone to PKistsn. India had said it had no problrm dropping out if need be. It had also said that uf its schexule was freed up, it woukd host a trilaeral event with Sri LNka and BanglDesh. So if PKistan hosted Asia cup it would havs done so with ibky Afghanistsn, Nepal and Hong Kong participating. But it would have shosn character. Example where India took a stsnd was Bout buying S400. They were threatened with CAATS sanctions which were not empty threats because they were imposed on Naro ally Turkey. But at stake was India's sovsrdignty and its policy of multi-alignmrnt. It was willing to psy the price if need be. Even the wrst whuch was unhappy about India's decision to buy RussiN weapons respects India more because ut stood its ground.
Foreign investment is NOT about technology; It is about creating jobs, generating net export revenues, and creating opportunities for local entrepreneurs all of which will contribute to the prosperity of the society. When we open up the right opporunities, technology will come in too to enable it, but you dont get FDI because you want technology. Once people are gainfully employed things start moving as both spending and savings increase. Savings create buffers for future investments. Spending sets up consumption cycle. These in turn drive growth. As growth sustains it generates more revenue for investments in education, health, and food. From these emerge healthy and creative people who become your country's future resource.
He was appointed in IK government and there was social media storm against this. But the so called intellectuals including many here did not raise their voice against the crap that was said against this guy. Conclusion we are ourselves responsible for the current state of Pakistan by being a mere witness to all the injustices being unleashed in that country..
The issue isn't that Pakistan doesn't HAVE the people who can solve all it's problems. The issue is, Pakistan doesn't WANT the people who can solve all it's problems.
Unfortunately, most smart economists are non-Sunni - Princeton University Professor How the principles of economics take into account expensive terrorism? PM Imran Khan is Economist from Oxford University.
I have seen , enjoyed atifs, khurrams, uzairs podcasts here n else where for the past 3 years. All of them are great economics 1 o 1 and all of them are tiered of repeating and they are singing to local crowd who are DEAF. Also paki elite DONT want to take the any pain in life.
i am amazed that half of the comments are from India, and just shows how much logic and common sense takes precedence in India, i wish logic could prevail in Pakistan as well. Really appreciate the podcast for starting this sort of discourse, i hope this way of thinking beomes the majority
My parents left Pakistan 1974 because of persecution. We children became police commissionars, Doctors in different fields outside of Pakistan. Sometimes i wish to be in Pakistan to work for My country but it is not possible
It is disappointing that the Pakistani government has not been able to change the discriminatory rhetoric and make use of talented individuals like Atif Mian.
This is a classic economy class which we got for free. In Princeton Uty where Mr Atif Mian teaches, it costs a lot to attend his class. Thanks Shehzad for bringing it for free 🙂
The greatness of Atif Mian is that he can explain the most difficult global economic issues so casually and simply that even a layman like me can understand and stay intrigued,
Shahzad , keep up with these Atif Mian podcasts. 2 hours seems like 2 minutes with this guy , the way he explains economics intrigues me alot with this discipline.
I feel jealous of this man’s intellect and clarity. Try asking these questions to most so called famous economists and the answers will be mostly jargon. The fact that Atif can not only answer these hard questions, but offer solutions is what makes his talk a masterclass. This man is a gem and should be a bi yearly fixture on your podcast. A true gem.
Atif MiN rightly feels shocked about how was able to swallow APS (16th december 2014) without structurL change. He is right of course. But there was something many order of magintudes worse that happened on 16th december also - coincidentally. 16th december 1971. :
What struck me most about listening to Atif Mian was that there was a genuine pain and sadness in his voice when he was talking about the economic situation. Even after all of the things this country has put him and his community through he still cares about the country and its people.
He is a genuine man. He was earlier a professor in my university at Chicago and he wrote book with another Our professor Aamir Sufi. We used to talk that he will win noble prize one day. He is such a smart economist in the US too.
What an impressive interview. I shared with people who rant about the country situation and how Atif brilliantly explained economics for common man. This podcast should be seen by everyone!!!
Great economist? Smallest bit of sense from a pakistani sounds like something great. Low expectations bring the wow factor. I am not convinced he is a good economist yet let alone great.
Atif Mian working with Abhijeet Bannerjee. Wow! Can’t wait. Meanwhile you can hear the love of Pakistan in Atif voice. So sad when you think of how that country has treated his people.
Just because A Bannerjee is an Indian, we have nothing to be elated. Commies like Bannerjee and Amartya Sen were responsible for setting India backward
@@amitaprabhakar2152Exactly. This fake liberals Pakiatani podcasters need foolish Indian subscribers for their numbers. He is one of those foolish subscribers.
We cant get the benefit from this guy because he is Qadiyani. How cruel this system is. When We Muslims go abroad and work for Jews and Christens it works for us but why cant we get the benefit from someone like Atif Mian.
A moment of Shame for Pakistan , We had surrendered in front of Extremists and Not appoint Him as a Finance Minister. So sad . No doubt he has a brilliant mind and Strong Economic leadership
13:00 160+ Space startups have come up in the last 5-6 years. These startups have staryed becoming suppliers and partners to UAE, Japanese, Israeli space programmes
What I loved about Mr Atif Mian, is the fact that he did not want to be categorised into any "isms". Muzammil Shah also refuses to be categorised. This is a true indicator of intellectual capacity. When we classify or group ourselves into a follower or proponent of any theory, we infact create constraints for ourselves from opening upto new possibilities or opportunities.
Muzammil Shah is a hack. Apples and oranges comparison. Of course Atif has personal views in which he identifies with certain values that will box him in one ideology camp. The reason for not disclosing it is pragmatic. Because if he discloses his views then he'll alienate the audience that do not identity with his particular ideology. He knows he can't risk that. He's reluctant to share his personal views because he is well aware of the intellectual shortcoming of his audience. Incredible restraint. This is such a ridiculous line of argumentation. Are Kierkegaard and Sarte not independent thinkers because they identify as existentialists? Does Marx have nothing to contribute to economy, sociology and philosophy because he identifies as a communist? People can have positions on topics. In fact that's what being educated in the subject matter leads you to. You can't be on the fence about topics like this and have no views. You're not thinking at all then.
I'm an accountant like our ex finance minister. He (Ishaq Dar) did to Pak economy what we do in a small business i.e. balancing the balance sheet. I totally agree with this legend (Atif Mian) that our social problems are of much more magnitude. May real owners of this poor country take pity on all of us.
Pakistan is a very unfortunate country that it keeps kicking out its best talent on one pretext or the other. 😭😭😭 Loads & loads of respect for Atif Mian!!! & Bravo Shehzad for this wonderful podcast/Macro Economics Masterclass !!! 👏👏👏
Dude pls get real. Ur own “hero” Imran Ahmed Khan Niyazi dropped him like a hot potato for being an Ahmedi. Stop being so hypocritical as people. I really love what he has to say. He’s clearly head and shoulders ahead of so many economists
@@guldukanmy guess comes from a kannada proverb.( Indina makkale nalina prajegalu).todays children are tomorrows citizens. Today's popular succesful economist will be tomorrow's prime ministerial candidate. If a successful cricket kaftaan could hold the Highest office, why not an economist
No elite any where does anything in national interest , you have to come up with mutual interest instead of expecting people doing things altruistically .
Atif Mian could’ve been Pakistan’s Manmohan Singh. What Singh did for India’s economy, the results are evident now. But we’re our own enemy. We don’t need any external enemy. We’re doing a great job.
😂there was pv Rao who was the pm at that time, even his own party 😔 disrespects him and his family till now so have some knowledge.Yes mms was fm at that time but he was also in financial advisory since 1980's but india was failing so only pv Rao played the main role for India's growth 📈 destiny.
@@bazigar9380I would not like to argue with someone like you. I would just say what Rao Sahab told Manmohan Singh, “If I don’t work then it’s your fault, if it works then it would be our win”
Stupid post. Manmohan did nothing other than follow the dictates of IMF. He and India had no choice. It was the corrupt policies and goonda raj of Manmohan's creepy Congress party for 60 years that bankrupted India and brought it to its knees.
It is wonderful to hear Atif Mian speak. Atif's premise is that these people are ignorant or incompetent is naïve or Atif is too polite. They know they are pricing local assets way below their intrinsic value. Those that run this country are only interested in enriching themselves at the expense of the nation with no remorse, honor, or self respect. They run private businesses, overthrow governments, form/disband politician parties, abuse/kill its own people, you may ask why? Money. Today what we are seeing is the culmination of 70 years of horrific abuse.
This was a masterclass by Atif Mian. Usually he tiptoes around issues of religious bigotry and intolerance--for obvious reasons--but in this interview he clearly identified the problem which is hatred and intolerance. Unfortunately the Pakistani state, especially its generals, are addicted to gundgardi. This is so reminiscent of the medieval raiders who were interested only in looting and plundering not producing. The Pakistani state has survived mainly by leveraging its nuisance value but it looks like the world has finally tired of financing this criminal enterprise.
Except qadianis have always had a connection to that military elite, and that cult demands mandatory chanda and every aspect of their lives to be governed by their s-called "khalifa". Bajwas father in law was at one time a paid up member of that group. The qadianis had their own militias too.
what an honest conversation!!! Feel sad how restricted he feels in articulating fully - If i am understanding him fully - he is saying - Remove extremism socially - STOP supporting Islamic (religion based ) fundamentalism/Terrorism - that is the only way fwd not only socially/morally but economically as well.
@@vinsin328No, but it is against islam first before any two nation theory, what they r doing is sadly under the name of the religion, misguiding people and making phatoes in society
A highly recommended podcast for anyone interested in learning about the idiocracy of our policy makers. Illiterate, shortsighted and internally divided. Stagflated we shall remain. Thank you Shehzad and Arif Mian at for this insightful and hopeless reminder.
Punjabies are terrible at sitting together and take wise decisions. Indian and Pakistan Punjab has a common trait. That is the reason Khalistan if ever made will be same as Pakistan.India is India because they have a huge non Punjabi population.
Are you sure that rest of the Pakistanis consider him a son of the soil?. He cannot be hired by the government. In Pakistan there is no merit. If you dont identify with the majority then you are considered nothing.
Such a brilliant discussion Mashallah! I am economics student and how much I learned in this 2hours podcast is more than my whole semester.. Unfortunately, extremist and narrow-minded mullas have hindered his ability to contribute to Pakistan's economy.😢😢
This is an amazing podcast. As an overseas Pakistani, I visited Islamabad last year and saw a billboard for investment opportunities from overseas Pakistani. My first reaction was exactly what he went through in this podcast. Sorry to say, the people running the country are morons. Your country should serve the well-being of its people and not the foreigners
Excellent podcast. @shehzad i do follow your podcasts here from India. Lots of love and best of luck. Atif Mian is an exceptional , crisp and thoughtful economist. Unfortunately, no one in pak is going to pay heed to his advice
"Your poverty is your strength... The forces of nature are with you..." Incredible podcast by @ThePakistanExp1 with @AtifRMian .Atif explains the enigmas of economy through simplistic way and in lay man's jargon.

What baffles me is you had to subscribe to this channel, turn the notifications on and post this cringepost without even watching the video. Wow, you are how low humanity can get.
I have been waiting for this podcast since yesterday. Although I am an Indian and this podcast is mostly on Pakistan's economy, but listening to Mr. Atif Mian is always enlightening. He is probably the most influential economist from South East Asia of our time with significant exposure to politics as well. I hope someday he will visit India, and we in India would have the opportunity to listen to him about Indian economy and things that we can do better/correct. We, Indian should listen to this wise man if we want to continue our journey of prosperity.
it would be great if Shehzad makes a podcast on Indian economy with Dr Mian. Indians need to hear new different perspective on the economic issues. usually Indian economist have a political bias. it would be interesting to hear what experts like Dr Mian think about Indian economic future.
Actually, the term Nervous system suits better in troubles related to Pakistan my friend. However, in your country, yes the Immune system would be the right term
One of the most important points that Atif missed is the factor of trust. To become a service industry, particularly in the IT field, trust is the major factor. No developed country today will trust Pakistan with its business data. Amazon ran away from Pakistan because of the misuse of the concept.
Trust is a critical factor. International trust - for investors needing to believe that the country will ultimately take good care of their investments, their employees will do the job diligently - and even internal trust - which impacts the cost of doing business. High trust economies are structurally easier to do business in. Remember that there is no reason right now for an investor to choose Pakistan over India or Bangladesh even though Pakistanis now have lower incomes. Due to track record of failure, history of double-dealing and double-crossing agreements at the national level, high energy prices and low trust society internally - investors are gonna pick india/bangladesh any day of the week until incomes there grow dramatically. It is also not guaranteed that Pakistan will see a dramatic pickup once India/Bangladesh reach 4000-5000 GDP per capita, although at that time if Pakistan is at 1500-2000 it will be a big potential market with a large English speaking work force - because by that time there will be African countries nipping at the heels. If Pakistanis still have a reputation for being terrorist sympathizing extremists who are pointlessly fighting with india - you might see Nigerians Ghanaians or Kenyans rise up faster instead.
Those who criticise CPEC are jealous of Pakistan.. Once CPEC is complete Pakistan will be number 1 economy of the world with usd 1000 trillion and China will be sevond with 100 trillion.. Pakistan also has Islam which will make it a super successful country like Yemen, Sudan, Somalia, Syria..

Great podcast as always. Although I have to say it was so sad to see that he had to mince his words or was trying to show the powers that be our very harsh reality coated in sugar. His comment about "Its very important to live to fight another day". That's where our visionary "leaders" have put us. A world renowned economic expert cannot even share his economic views without fearing for his life and property. And we expect them to do the right thing ? They won't. Because they think its still the 80's. They think it takes dunda to fix things as seen by their measures to all of a sudden stabilize the dollar. Complete imbeciles treating the symptom and not the disease. Its naïve to think they will change or take the measures being talked about. Because they do not have the competence. They will keep on doing what they have been doing for the past 70 years expecting different results. Results will be the same even if they have to deal with consequences. Just like 1971 they will ignore it and keep doing the same thing blaming everyone else but themselves. Even in nature its survival of the fittest not the strongest with the biggest dunda. And sadly things will take its natural course.
Atif mian's approach to fix Pakistan is *total overhaul & not allowing the wrongs which used to be done before,* but Obviously Politicians like *IMRAN-SHARRIF-ZARDARI will see it as a Political Suicide,* they will excuse, to see the coming Disasters of Pakistan. *Atif is not a Good FIT for Pakistan, just an opinion.*
Shehzad, every time Atif Mian comes, the value of the episode increases by atleast 5X. I've been watching this in the gym while using a cross trainer as this is more invigorating than music can ever be!
This man could have been Pakistan's Manmohan Singh, But illiterate Pakistani fundamentalists will blacken his posters and hit it with chappals because he is Ahmedi just like they did with Abdus Salam
Manmohan Singh was able to be Manmohan Singh because of PV Narsimha Rao. There is no Narsimha Rao in Pakistan. A politician who plays all sorts of politics but has his country's welfare front and center in his focus.

Atif Mian Ji, please come to India. There are many universities, some even private that will pay you an arm and a leg to have you teach to their students. We'd be very happy to give you citizenship should you wish so. Also there are lot of business/investment opportunities that you can take advantage of. Indian investments give really handsome returns.
@@financialadvisor6327 He is no Jihadi, he is a scholar. I am doing my PhD in Economics and this man is a big deal. And I agree that India should invite him to teach our students. We should invite the best from every corner of the world like we used to back during the days of Nalanda University.
@@knc2111 Yes that was in the past. Are you saying that Aitf Mia will come to Indian universities and burn it down? Or will he visit University library and destroy it? What exactly do you think he will do? He currently does excellent research and is very popular teacher in Princeton. He will be the same if he comes to India. His children will also be very well educated and be enlightened. We should develop confidence. Today no one is going to attack us either from within or without. As the other guy said we should build our Nalanda again. We should bring back those days of glory. We should invite the best from all corners of the world. But , let me be a bit cocky and naughty too. What would Pakistanis feel I'd we "steal" their talent and benefit from him? I think that would be a master stroke. They will be sulking in corner hiding their face in shame. What would I not give to see that?
Being Indian, I am shocked, such great personalities exists and Pakistan is looking for answers. He couldn't be part of EAC due to religion, Pakistan's problems and solutions revolves around Religion
Come and teach India Atif ji... We can appreciate real talent... We don't see religion, we see only merit... Come sir we will give you the izzat u deserve 🙏
Nervous system is broken - that's the key takeaway. Everything else is explanatory detail. But Pakistan has a few muscles and the broken nervous system is energized and controlled by muscular spasms. Next stage is coma. Can a miracle happen?
I sometimes feel sorry for Pakistanis like Shehzad and Dr Mian. Such brilliant people who want to change their nation, yet find it difficult to relate to a majority of their fellow citizens who hold such diametrically opposite views. But these guys have real guts, inspite of all opposition they are fighting for their beliefs and betterment of their nation despite such opposition. Salute
@hulagukhan-we3fw I think it takes courage to go against the majoritarian public opinion prevailing in a country. Most Podcasters will only choose the line which would give them maximum benefits (read subscribers).Shehzad has a belief system and he sticks to it. And that is what I appreciated.
Bhai let's look inwards and not give gyaan or feel sorry for some of the best people out there. India isn't some first-world country now for us to feel entitled to feel sorry for Pakistan. If anything, we should learn from the words of wisdom Dr. Mian has shared and double down on it for our own progress. Pakistan will sooner or later come around but at the same time, India is also miles behind in all major indicators of a good life.
I see most comments by Indians taking pleasure at the troubles of Pakistan and gloating over the economic success of India irrespective of the fact this success is highly lopsided.
