But the so called intellectuals including many here did not raise their voice against the crap that was said against this guy. I feel jealous of this man’s intellect and clarity. Try asking these questions to most so called famous economists and the answers will be mostly jargon. The fact that Atif can not only answer these hard questions, but offer solutions is what makes his talk a masterclass. This man is a gem and should be a bi yearly fixture on your podcast. A true gem.

What I loved about Mr Atif Mian, is the fact that he did not want to be categorised into any "isms". Muzammil Shah also refuses to be categorised. This is a true indicator of intellectual capacity. When we classify or group ourselves into a follower or proponent of any theory, we infact create constraints for ourselves from opening upto new possibilities or opportunities.
@Mustafa-ou8qs
@Mustafa-ou8qs 9 месяцев назад
Muzammil Shah is a hack. Apples and oranges comparison. Of course Atif has personal views in which he identifies with certain values that will box him in one ideology camp. The reason for not disclosing it is pragmatic. Because if he discloses his views then he'll alienate the audience that do not identity with his particular ideology. He knows he can't risk that. He's reluctant to share his personal views because he is well aware of the intellectual shortcoming of his audience. Incredible restraint. This is such a ridiculous line of argumentation. Are Kierkegaard and Sarte not independent thinkers because they identify as existentialists? Does Marx have nothing to contribute to economy, sociology and philosophy because he identifies as a communist? People can have positions on topics. In fact that's what being educated in the subject matter leads you to. You can't be on the fence about topics like this and have no views. You're not thinking at all then.

They know they are pricing local assets way below their intrinsic value. Those that run this country are only interested in enriching themselves at the expense of the nation with no remorse, honor, or self respect. They run private businesses, overthrow governments, form/disband politician parties, abuse/kill its own people, you may ask why? Money. Today what we are seeing is the culmination of 70 years of horrific abuse.

This was a masterclass by Atif Mian. Usually he tiptoes around issues of religious bigotry and intolerance--for obvious reasons--but in this interview he clearly identified the problem which is hatred and intolerance. Unfortunately the Pakistani state, especially its generals, are addicted to gundgardi. This is so reminiscent of the medieval raiders who were interested only in looting and plundering not producing. The Pakistani state has survived mainly by leveraging its nuisance value but it looks like the world has finally tired of financing this criminal enterprise.

Great podcast. Was on a 5 hour drive and heard it twice over. So many gems. I feel that Atif Mian and Shehzad are missing one of key issues in Pakistan in connection with the lack of national saving rates/investment: *Dual Citizenship* . Why would any Pakistani millionaire invest money in Pakistan when the individual can invest anywhere else in the world? Dual citizenship for a developing country is like a no-fault exit clause. Its astonishing that government officials, politicians and even a caretaker Prime Minister has been a dual citizen. For us Indians, _two lessons to take away from Atif Mian_ : 1) The danger of income inequality in leading to low domestic growth - the China case - we are not there yet but its a real future problem for us. Already the sale of entry level cars - Maruti Celerio etc has been falling with sale of SUVs etc rising, indicating our post-Covid economy is K-shaped: not good news. 2) We need to figure out how to deal with the poison of majoritarian politics that has been unleashed. In the 90s, there was a joke about how Lalu Prasad Yadav will need 1 week to turn Singapore into Bihar. I make the same joke today about Karnataka sounding a lot more like Uttar Pradesh.

What is so tragic is that people like Atif Mian are top world class talent and somehow instead of leveraging them, the dysfunctional system in Pakistan is losing them to the West when they need him the most. Hats off to you sir for a brilliant analysis. Whenever I listen to Atif, I get brilliant and candid insights on development, economy and finance seldom found elsewhere, not just about Pakistan but globally. Many thanks Shehzad bhai for doing this. Love from India 🙏

Bhai let's look inwards and not give gyaan or feel sorry for some of the best people out there. India isn't some first-world country now for us to feel entitled to feel sorry for Pakistan. If anything, we should learn from the words of wisdom Dr. Mian has shared and double down on it for our own progress. Pakistan will sooner or later come around but at the same time, India is also miles behind in all major indicators of a good life.

One of the most important points that Atif missed is the factor of trust. To become a service industry, particularly in the IT field, trust is the major factor. No developed country today will trust Pakistan with its business data. Amazon ran away from Pakistan because of the misuse of the concept.
@AKumar-co7oe
@AKumar-co7oe 9 месяцев назад
Trust is a critical factor. International trust - for investors needing to believe that the country will ultimately take good care of their investments, their employees will do the job diligently - and even internal trust - which impacts the cost of doing business. High trust economies are structurally easier to do business in. Remember that there is no reason right now for an investor to choose Pakistan over India or Bangladesh even though Pakistanis now have lower incomes. Due to track record of failure, history of double-dealing and double-crossing agreements at the national level, high energy prices and low trust society internally - investors are gonna pick india/bangladesh any day of the week until incomes there grow dramatically. It is also not guaranteed that Pakistan will see a dramatic pickup once India/Bangladesh reach 4000-5000 GDP per capita, although at that time if Pakistan is at 1500-2000 it will be a big potential market with a large English speaking work force - because by that time there will be African countries nipping at the heels. If Pakistanis still have a reputation for being terrorist sympathizing extremists who are pointlessly fighting with india - you might see Nigerians Ghanaians or Kenyans rise up faster instead.

Thanks Shehzad for a great podcast. The discussion about APS attack was truly touching. I also feel Pakistanis can use this example to understand the anger Indians have towards Pak establishment. We have faced not one but multiple such terrorist attacks sponsored by Pak. That's why when you see Indians getting upset with "Aman ki Asha" type people in 🇮🇳, you should understand where we are coming from. Living in Mumbai, or any big city in India, before 2014 was an experience full of anxiety for us. Never have we seen Pakistanis showing any concern or condemning those threats to us. Also, should help you understand why Modi keeps winning🙏🙏
@edgecase1047
@edgecase1047 9 месяцев назад
When it comes to Modi/BJP there is no way you can convince these Pakistani's. These so called peaceful Aman loving people passionately HATE Modi, but they call others haters. Take any these Pakistani Podcasters, I guarantee no matter what the topic is there will be a snipe attack at Modi whether directly or indirectly. They think words coming out Arundati Roy as gospel.
