Everyone from Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh & Gujarat have studied Ahilya bai Holkar in their school history. Possibly students from Rajasthan and Uttar Pradesh too. When you talk about Indore's history, the first name you think of is Ahilya bai Holkar !! Her story of avoiding a war through this letter to Raghoba was famous. It was a sure shot question in the History exam - How did Rani Ahilya bai Holkar avoid the war with Raghoba ? 🙂 Her learnings from the Hindu Scripturs inspired her leadership style. And the same thought process is been carried forward thru generations.

"Baai sahb" this was the address by which people of Malwa used for Ahilya Bai Holkar. She was the most popular queen in central India. Other brave queens have been Rani Laxmibai of Jhansi, Rani Chennamma of Chittoor (Aandhra Pradesh), Rani Durgawati Gond of Mahakaushal (today's Jabalpur, Mandla, Damoh, Sagar, Sioni) and many brave queens of Rajasthan.

I have done 2 years of my schooling in Indore and we use to daily cross Devi Ahilya Vishwavidyalaya (University) twice as its main campus was situated on the same road where our school was located. Even the Holkar Palace was situated on A B Road near our residence then and we use to cross it often nd from there i first came to know about the Royal family of Holkars……
