Had to do some researching, and discovered that they created an award winning hotel with great reviews and after 7 years, sold out and returned to the UK. I can only guess that in the end they got a good return on their investment.

Wow, They had like every imaginable challenge thrown at them but they stayed positive and continue to persevere. And that basically is what stood out and impressed me the most about this couple. And I could tell they had experience with business and life in general. They knew that they had to continue to believe in their vision and just press through and stay the course and that's what shone through and helped them achieve their goals. I can't but help but think of that old saying, " when the going gets tough the tough get going." cause that is exactly who they are they are really a resilient couple.

It happens all over europe, countries leave their heritage to rot but when a 'foreigner' comes along to restore them, they only meet with difficulty. So very many great building in europe ( I live in France ) would be dust without foreign money !! Including Versailles !
@SuzanneU
@SuzanneU 4 года назад
The bureaucracy is just as bloody-minded for native Europeans. A French person would have just as much difficulty as a foreigner - and probably less money.
@TheFiown
@TheFiown 4 года назад
@@SuzanneU You are right except that foreigners have also to fight with a language not their own and a bureaucracy that often in europe defies logic. French people to take an example are brought up with the system. As a Scot having bought and restored two homes in France I know what it's like except that I spoke French which helped. Some countries in Europe work with bribes to the local mayor or council to speed things up or turn a blind eye. The big problem is with listed buildings, instead of thinking that the building is being 'saved' as part of the country's cultural heritage, they impose sometimes crazy conditions. In Scotland a man I know tried for years to buy a listed castle and during the 8 years the authorites took to do the paperwork the ceilings and roof caved in a looters helped themselves. He still bought it of course but now has to spend money he never imagined.
@SuzanneU
@SuzanneU 4 года назад
@@TheFiown My experience is in Croatia, where my spouse (native born Croatian) and I and his nephew (Croatian) are in an informal partnership to build a house on the site of an old building. The old building, hotching with history, had fallen down and most of the stone looted, as well as the heavy wood beams. Despite living in Croatia and speaking Croatian as his mother tongue, our nephew had no idea about the regulations! It's taken 4 years for a 6 month project, and we're still not finished. It would help if we were there instead of in the USA because my spouse could take on a lot of the necessary bureaucracy as this often involves personal visits to various offices, getting copies of documents from other offices, and having them notarized in yet other places. I don't think it's an easy job for the people who oversee the refurbishment/restoration of historic buildings. They themselves have intricate layers of bureaucracy to follow. I'm sure they don't like to see the buildings deteriorate or collapse. At the same time, there have to be protections against gung-ho types who could totally destroy the character of the building by imposing ultramodern ultraluxurious ideas upon it. I watched one episode where it was pretty clear that an old wall that should have been retained and restored was assisted to collapse by the new owner, who wanted that space for a master bedroom the size of a small house.

As a language teacher, the reaction of their children is normal! That said, the teacher should pay more attention to what the boys are doing so they don't get lost or bored! Give them small tasks to finish instead of expecting them to follow the lesson. For example, have them translate what is written on the board and assign a clasdmate whose English is rudimentary to help the boys follow the lessons! It takes so little really! After about two months, the kids will be able to speak using short sentences!

@@loriminnesota1870 As an ESOL tutor [English for Speakers of Other Languages] in UK and elsewhere, I don't agree that it's a problem all over. Most human beings in the world speak at least 2 languages and think that normal. It's mainly white English speakers, in my experience, who tend to stick to one language and assume that's normal. English schools really struggle getting white native students and their families to accept speaking another language as natural. Likewise, many expat white English speakers don't (as here?) try to listen and learn from the country they're in. They're really missing out! Most immigrants to UK learn the new language and culture pretty quickly, of necessity. If someone doesn't there's usually a reason -- I'm thinking of many female immigrants whose husbands work outside the home and who don't have confidence or access to go to classes or other groups. PS The more languages you know -- including Makaton/BSL, music and maths -- the better your brain works. Trust me, I'm an ESOL tutor.

They operated and successfully removed the growth but the operation took 3 times as long as the surgeons expected and resulted in major trauma to her spinal cord. She is now a paraplegic from her mid back down with a massive life change. @Piijo2K-hf3vk
@Piijo2K-hf3vk 3 года назад
Because of the CONTRACT you do with the CONSTRUCTOR, that CONTRACT implies certain responsabilities, one is to be responsable of what you do, is suposed that you know what you are doing. In the permits is easy, you can go to the Town Hall and ask for them, you pay the fees and all the other things like, taxes, insurance, police permit (if you have to close the street to unload brikcs, etc), electric & water conpany permits, in case ifit´s a new building or one that has a "problems" like, unpaid bills or it´s been inpose a fine for stealing water or electricity (those are the worst) and meny other things like: + Yes, you have to go to the BANK and then, you go to TAXES and they have to put a seal as you are already paid. - But can´t you look at the computar and find that I already pay it? + No, you have to go directly to the TAXES desk and ask for the seal. Then you find that you have to take to them the BANK RECIPT, so you go a second time. As I said you can go on your own or you can ask the builder who has a wife and she knows all the tricks, specially if is a small town like Velez-Málaga. They probably know the GUY in the Town Hall, or problably they are "family" (a cousin of a cousin, or her mother who was the sister of an unt who married her second cousion by father, after that, they say : " Of cousrse La Juanita, your cousin"). Normally they will do the all building with more or less things you don´t like, not for legal reazons, just because is was cheaper for them and you will never know, but if something goes wrong, know you will find that your builder did not get all the permits, you paid him for this, but you do not have them and there´s when the problems begin and you have to take legal actions, to save your ass and not get fined and responsible for what your builder did o didn´t do. Ignorance of the law does not exempt from compliance. Basicly, is your duty to know the laws.

No he has to be negative to build the suspense otherwise there is no excitement! In the same way many reality shows have a time factor built in so that 'will they or won't they' finish before time is called. Its all BS just to sell the program. They think is it is a foregone conclusion then nobody will watch!

Society and government is far more secure in Spain and from the little I understand about Turkey but don’t you need links with one of the (probably wrong spelling) Sects to run a business in Turkey ie, have local contacts if not be a local? Also I certainly wouldn’t want to have been in Beirut with the absolute disaster that’s occurred.

@ Roxanne Sparks. 'These countries' have not invited British immigrants to buy their properties. If you're even half awake through the story, the couple said THEY WANTED to start a business and live in Spain! You're such a hypocrite when we know how difficult building permissions are to come by, in UK, even for an unlisted building( I presume an equivalent terminology like 'listed building' would apply in Spain for an old palace renovation). It just shows how narrow minded people like you, think that other countries should roll the red carpet out for Brits who want to cut corners to obtain planning permission in their country!

So so typical of kids to make life so miserable for the parents by constantly gripping like the life they live is the most important. When I was growing up kids didn't make life awful for the parents. We supported the parents in their decisions and understood that the stress they had to live was not on purpose. These people deserve all the success that can possibly come their way. GOD BLESS THEM ALL.

Personally, I'm shocked that the parents didn't make sure they had learned some amount of Spanish before plopping them in public school in spain. It's not as though the family were fleeing violence or famine in their home country, lime most immigrants who move to a place where they don't speak the language. Even after moving them to the international school, the mother only seemed concerned that her children ware no longer complaining complaining about going to school, not that they were finally able to actually learn.
