I havent seen anyone in present days to reproduce with such a high fidelity the stage presence a la '30s, like Max Raabe does here. The simple fact that this exists is awesome!
Thank you very much, that was swell ! Wunderschön !
For those who don't know, this song IS Yiddish!! "Bei Mir Bistu Shein" (Yiddish: בײַ מיר ביסטו שיין, "To Me You're Beautiful") is a popular Yiddish song composed by Jacob Jacobs (lyricist) and Sholom Secunda (composer) for a 1932 Yiddish comedy musical, I Would If I Could (in Yiddish, Men Ken Lebn Nor Men Lost Nisht, "You could live, but they won't let you"), which closed after one season. The score for the song transcribed the Yiddish title as "Bay mir bistu sheyn".[1] The original Yiddish version of the song (in C minor) is a dialogue between two lovers who share lines of the song.
You need to write this comment on the many other recordings on RU-vid where so many people claim that the pronunciation is bad German. (I get tired of repeating myself.)
@@ronaldcammarata3422 Yiddish (ייִדיש, יידיש or אידיש, yidish or idish, pronounced [ˈ(j)ɪdɪʃ], lit. 'Jewish'; in older sources ייִדיש-טײַטש, Yidish-Taytsh, lit. ' Judeo-German')[6] is a High German-derived language historically spoken by Ashkenazi Jews. 🙂
Lyrics (1:05) Of all the girls I've known, and I've known some Until I first met you, I was lonesome And when you came in sight, dear, my heart grew light And this old world seemed new to me You're really swell, I have to admit you Deserve expressions that really fit you And so I've racked my brain, hoping to explain All the things that you do to me Bei mir bist du schön, please let me explain Bei mir bist du schön means you're grand Bei mir bist du schön, again I'll explain It means you're the fairest in the land I could say bella, bella, even sehr wunderbar Each language only helps me tell you how grand you are I've tried to explain, bei mir bist du schön So kiss me and say you understand Bei mir bist du schön, you've heard it all before But let me try to explain Bei mir bist du schön means that you're grand Bei mir bist du schön, it's such an old refrain And yet I should explain It means I am begging for your hand I could say bella, bella, even sehr wunderbar Each language only helps me tell you how grand you are I could say bella, bella, even sehr wunderbar Each language only helps me tell you how grand you are I've tried to explain, bei mir bist du schön So kiss me and say that you will understand
Max Raabe is unique. He has a splendid voice with a rare falsetto ability. His small orchestra less a conductor is brilliant and complements his style. Every concert is a performance par excellence.
I believe the violinist, who are always female, is the lovely and talented Cecilia Crisafulli who joined the Palast Orchester in 2007. She may be gone by now.
Great performance! I can't help myself and honestly don't even know why exactly but I adore the way he leans against the piano at the end! Lovely song and wonderfully enacted from beginning to end! Loved it
I love this song, Bei Mir Bist Du Schoen. My pals in Indiana LOVE it and would like to see it in a fab show over here in HOLLYWOOD. I love my spiritual brother and family in Indiana. Hope they enjoy you, Max Raabe and the Palast Orchester. Kisses, Tyler Lord Hamilton
My grandmother was born in 1888 and while not jewish pronounced "shayne". A cousin, before WWII came home from the academy and thereafter only spoke Hoch Deutsch and looked down on speakers of the vernacular or local variants. We have lost most local "slang" in the USA also .
Perfection ! Bella - Bella ! Thanks for posting this wonderful music video. It has a wonderful rhythm and swing melody. Very motivating and positive. Thanks Chicago....
They used the same arrangement as Billy Cotton and His Band did on their 1938 recorded version of this tune. Three uploads of the Cotton Band record are on RU-vid.

Sehr leidenschaftliche Interpretation des Liedes. Die Violine ist sehr gut gespielt! Der Trompeter im letzten Viertel unterstreicht nochmals meine Wertschätzung.
