Palestinians: Tell me about your experience with the Israeli army? 

I'll give you an experience, I'm a descendant of Palestinians grandparents on both sides. Both my parents were born after the occupation and I have no family members in Palestine. I have no family members who are activists or anything out of the norm. I'm a citizen of the US and Jordan. I tried going to Palestine once and they illegally denied me entry for absolutely no reason. I called the US embassy and they said it's illegal, it happens, and there's nothing we can do about it.

The first girl interviewed seems so kind. I'm sorry that she and her family had to go through something like that. I hope she's doing well!

Im just 1:43 seconds in and I'm astounded how geniunely the first 3 people responded with a light heart, and a smile.. That place where they are reminds me a lot of where I grew up. Beautiful land.

The sad part is that this is such common experience for these people, that it has become routine. It’s hard to describe some unique experience when it’s happening all the time.

Well, I used to be a soldier in those places, as soldiers, we are taught always to be respectful towards the locals , of course there are soldiers who are filled with hate towards them, and then will not be so nice when dealing with them as well, but even that is not to the point of just randomly shooting someone (The soldier will be sent to jail). Tear gas is being used against violent , stone throwing gatherings of Arabic youths(Sadly it happens everyday), meant to spread them out and stop them from proceeding. If tear gas doesn't stop them from proceeding towards Jewish areas (Roads and such, which is their objective of throwing the stones at), then the soldiers will use rubber shots (Not live fire) , which are pretty good at suppressing these gatherings without actually taking lives. Live fire is only used when there is immediate life threat of civilians/soldiers, and only then it is used. As for the checkpoints, they are meant to stop any suspicious approaching vehicles, along with the information we are receiving, The suspicious / looked after vehicles, will be stopped by the soldiers and checked out, these mostly end up in a "Hello" and "Goodbye" between the locals and the soldiers after 2 minutes, and if there is a reason for suspecting the vehicle/driver/passengers, they will be held up for up to few hours , until they are taken forward to further investigation or set free by the time the soldiers deem them innocent. For the people saying Israeli soldiers broke into their homes, It is true, arrests are taking place in these regions , but be sure that Israeli soldiers are not breaking into random people's houses in the middle of the night just because they feel like it. These arrests are meant to take terrorists/people who had done something like throwing molotovs/ opened fire(etc), and they end up being investigated and each person gets dealt with according to the law. From my experience as a soldier, I never had to open fire towards anyone, and gladly so. As you can see, this situation is very complicated, and it will only get worse as the education systems (Way more prominent in the palestinian authorities) are in favor of hate towards each other, filled with propaganda, and it's just sad to see it happening.

You can just see that they are so used to being constantly checked and searched that these questions don’t even surprise them. The soldiers are always interrogating then at the very least and that alone is such an oppression to live under on a day to day basis!!

I can also give my own experience. I was born in Nablus, West Bank, I was three years old when the intifada began, but I left Palestine when I turned eleven when my family immigrated to Europe for a better future. During the short time I've lived there, the most negative experiences I had were the frequent, random tear gas attacks. One time I particularly remember how unpleasant it was, I was walking from school with my 2 sisters and an IDF car passed by and threw a tear gas bomb near us (it was just a random day, very few people on the street minding their own bussiness) and the bomb hit a teen boy right in the head, he was like 20 meters away from us at most. He seemed in so much distress, fell to the ground and was violently trying to clear his head and coughing. We were rushed into a store close by and they closed the door. I could barely breath and the tears were burning my cheeks, I couldn't picture how bad it was for that kid, and for what? Another frequent negative thing were the curfews. Random curfews were set in place and we could not leave the house even to buy food. We would stay home from school for days and delay everything just because our illegal occupiers felt like it. Another negative experience I had was when the soldiers would randomly search our homes. They would gather the young boys and men in a place, guarding them with weapons, and the children, women and elderly in another, but all outside the home, and search the house. Sometimes if they would find any weapons or something they did not like, they would detain men and young boys. Although none of my family members were detained, I have some friends from childhood who were detained after I left the country, some of them held in solitary confinement for long periods of time. Finally one experience I remember is when one time they stormed the city unannounced (which sometimes happened) and a tank appeared near my school. I was in class and could see everything through the window. There were young boys throwing stones, so obviously they started shooting and throwing gas bombs, the whole school full of children panicked, there was crying and yelling everywhere, we had to be sent home in ambulances and random cars for safety and because we were so many and not all of our parents could come pick us up. It was horrible. Anyway, I would like to conclude by saying that I somewhat empathize with a lot of soldiers. They are 18 years old most of the time, so practically kids, brainwashed into terrorizing some random people in an occupied territory. And refusal to comply can land you in prison. I do not condemn the soldiers, but the Israeli government, and the western states for not interfering and cutting army funds. Israel should be allowed to have its own state, but continuous expansion of illegal settlements in the West Bank and this inhumane treatment of the people whose land is stolen is unacceptable.

They are always making jokes at checkpoints...and once there was a soldier staring at me and at my photo in my ID and making jokes about my looks.

At 2:46, Corey put in the subtitles that the interviewee said "it's about the balance" and then the interpreter and Corey repeated after him "The balance?", but he was most likely saying "the barriers" , and he repeated it again. Then he said "Moving between cities" and discussed an incident that happened to him at checkpoint, which made it clear he was talking about "barriers" to me (i.e., maHsomim, checkpoints). Yes, his English pronunciation wasn't that great but if I can figure it out from context, so can Corey. Not only does he need to do a betterjob translating, he also needs to subtitle more accurately for English.

the interviewer is starting to get on my nerve. i understand he's most likely jewish (hence biased), but he seems to get pretty agitated by some of these answers, like he's not even trying to hide it. dude, if these subjects trigger you, maybe you should make videos about something else.

When you hear these responses its a good idea to imagine how you'd feel living under those conditions. He gives the soldiers excuses, ie they're just following orders but thats not good enough. When I was in the army I was posted to northern Ireland during the troubles. As I knew an Irish guy in training who told me the reality of occupation I refused to go on conciencious grounds because I didn't think it was right.. 'Do unto others as you'd have done to yourself'. Thats a motto I've lived my life by...

I really think most of this can be avoided if our army would teach our soldiers at the vary least BASIC arabic, I mean it's not that hurd once you know hebrow, just some words like "Ahlan, where is your ID? and goodbye" and add more soldiers to cheackpoints so that they wouldn't have to wait hours to pass, it would go more smoothly and the soldiers would be less tired and annoyed from the amount of people and the stress

I once met a Palestinian woman, who said to me that her boyfriend is an Israeli Army officer. At first I fell from the sky. Then she said that once she was in Hebron and there a settler came to s** harass her. Then her boyfriend, who was heavily armed that time, came for her rescue. This made him a hero in her eyes. Question some Israelis about what exactly goes on at checkpoints. Are soldiers at the checkpoint making a decision as who is detained? or does a commander at some other location deside who gets stopped? Why are Palistines being detained for hours, days, or months?

my experience: they just killed my 13 years old cousin, and when they came to arrest my brother he wasn’t home so they took my father as a hostage and called my brother to submit for them or my father will be jailed instead, so my brother just gave himself up, btw he was suspected of throwing stones he wasn’t that dangerous !! he spent 14 months in the jail
