Pallet Flipping 101: $1600 Before Lunch

John made $1614 flipping pallets before 11am the day we recorded this interview.
His business model? Buying industrial byproducts, the kind of stuff that’s used for shipping like pallets, cardboard boxes, crates, and so on, and selling them on for a profit.
John Wilker started out buying or being given pallets free by businesses that had no need for them and selling them to pallet yards.
Realizing the pallet yards were selling them for a profit to businesses that needed them, John saw an opportunity.
“Bottom line is I’m a middleman,” John said.
John hit the pavement and started knocking on the doors of industrial businesses, large warehouses, distributors, and scrap yards.
He asked if they had pallets and other shipping byproducts they didn’t need, what they were currently doing with these items, if they needed any items, and explained how he could help.
Wanting to operate without storage space and employees John has found the perfect balance between supply and demand. He spends his mornings picking up items from one business and selling them on to another just a few miles away.
“It’s quite simple…but has to be set up in the correct manner for it to work,” John said.
It’s certainly one of the more interesting side hustles, and it sets the cogs turning to think of other niches that can fit this model.

As I am listening to this podcast, I am literally driving through an industrial area looking for which places have mountains of pallets. I've already found a few. It's pretty tricky finding immediate buyers for things like lightly used shipping boxes and air bags when you unexpectedly have a supplier wanting to get rid of them right away and you haven't anticipated the conundrum of immediately having to find a buyer.

He’s a good talker he makes it sound like unicorns and rainbows. If it was so profitable and he’s making so much money so fast he wouldn’t be putting his business model out there in a course for random people on the internet. I worked at a place that would get a huge skip in the dump the pallets into. I told them there was a charity who would take them for free cause they use them in work rehab training, and another business will buy then off you. Apparently phoning either was too much trouble because they kept paying huge money to replace the skip bin.

@@braylonzilner5560 they we fabricating pipe work for underground gas plants. Pieces of pipe arrived, they would bend it, reweld it, add flanges to it and paint it. Another business I've seen go through pallets are caterers of large places. Think sporting arenas, concert halls, etc. While they do get the pallets that cannot be insole, they get plenty others that can be. Another innate seen sells garden pots. I see their unwanted pallets left outside their fence, not a lot but any free pallet is a free pallet right?

I took a principals of finance class my senior year of high school and my teacher was huge on side hustles and for our final he wanted us to come up with a side hustle and actually start up something small. I sold fidget spinners (back when that was a thing) and made $480 in profit in a week just from selling them to kids from my middle school and high-school and ever since that fad died out I’ve always wanted to do something else. Now that I’m a broke college kid, I don’t have much money to put into anything and resell it, I was looking at liquidation pallets and things of that sort but I never could really cough up the money for something like that, but then I came across recycling pallets. I never thought someone would but those things, and better yet, I know a great deal of places that have tons sitting behind their buildings. I’m currently on my last week of my first semester at college and I am going to jump on this right after my last final. This was such a great video and you just got yourself another subscriber! I would sort them you get more money or you will sort them at the yard.48"×40 #1 used but no broken boards or stringers or the stringers have a meshed plate nailed on the stringer making it a #1pallet again.sizes other less money stringers repaired with a plug a piece of a 2×4 is a#2repaired less then #1 thats your money pallets other pallets they might only pay a buck to a 1.50use that money to pay for gas.if you repair them you get more money less per hour worked more sorting and just driving them in after you sort them .

Where I work if there bad they all get stacked together, some are good just an odd size they give us $1 per pallet regardless of size unless totally broken. At this point they have no choice to take back sort scrap take to a pallet yard repair what you can? This has been my experience

I came here looking into how to get pallets of liquidated goods (like returned or open box electronics) and then breaking those down into individual items and selling them places like ebay. Normally I thought people had to pay a couple hundred or thousands of $'s for these items in bulk, not be given to them or thrown away. Is that not what this is? This video is about literally selling empty wooden pallets? wtf

It definitely would be cheaper, and my guess it comes down the focus of their business and how closely concerned they are with what they probably consider a byproduct - not core to the operation. I think you’re right to be skeptical though, and through conversations with these companies I imagine you’ll get a sense for their existing processes.

Yeah that's the thing about great business ideas. The business isn't so great when the Market's flooded with tons of competition. The best stuff is the stuff you figure out yourself. Like he figured this out himself and he's already done it for 22 years so I'm sure he doesn't need to do it anymore. Hopefully they're still places left in room 4 more competition in the pallet business but just in the past few days I've seen people with cars and Pickups driving around with trailers full of pallets .I know more people are doing it now because of all these videos.

Moving all those pallets by hand = buldging disk / herniated disk Risk to reward is too high , lifting pallets over head and twisting bending throwing/ stacking up . Trust me I been recycling pallets for the past 20 years , if I didn’t have a fork lift I wouldn’t touch them .

Jeremy Adam yes I agree , normally a boral pallet is 60 pounds , a orco or angelus pallet is about 55 pounds a four way 42x40 is about 45 pounds . Once u stack them to a certain height then u have to lift them over ur head bend twist and launch it , try doing that over 2000 times .. then no matter how core rest your form is at one point ur legs will be uneven fatigue will kick in and you will start cheating and using your back. Just trying to save people from a herniated disk as I suffer from a L5-s1 hernia

I believe 90 percent of pallets are recycled. But to your point 60 percent of lumber is used for pallets

@@NickLoper a huge majority of pallets are one time use ( food , medical etc.) Thats why there is an endless supply. Tens of thousands of brand new get produced every day to fill those needs.

A nuisance for the business to just haul the pallets to the pallet yard themselves he says in the beginning....?????! For the money he is claiming the pallet yard paid him for the pallets the business could just hire a PT employee to make those runs for them every day for minimum wage.... This doesn't add up.

This is hard work lift move stack unstack move dropoff its physically demanding and hard on the back better find some young strong help trouble is theyre not going to do this for min wage. Even with a forklift and pallet jacks you still have to mess with them. Move 50 - 100 plus a day pickup and drop off for a week it will beat you up. Youll need lot of good help and pay them well - its just like moving furniture.. Hope your help shows back up next day,

Alonzo ...Yeah, I know...lol. Pallets aren’t even that heavy, really...if they’re wet from the rain they can be a bit heavier, but at 5 or 6 bucks a lift give me all ya got! 👍

The dude said, he’s trying to fly under the radar and drive an old beat up truck so that nobody thinks he’s got money. He doesn’t want people to know about his business so he can profit off everyone. I bet that dude doesn’t even pay taxes on that $1,600 before lunch money. The government says the only thing worse than being a rich drug dealer is tax evasion. Make sure you’re straight dude.
