⚠️⚠️ PALM OIL AND DISAPPEARANCE OF ORANGS-OUTANGS, WHAT'S THE LINK ?!
Palm oil grows only in the equatorial zone. With 85% of world production, Indonesia and Malaysia dominate the market. These areas are also that of large areas of dense forests. Problem is, the demand is exploding: over the last ten years, palm oil production has jumped almost 83%. Every day, thousands of hectares are burned to grow these famous palm trees, making this one of the main causes of deforestation in Southeast Asia.
After having burned the forests, the industrial producers opt for monoculture, gigantic surfaces are thus covered by only palm trees. Consequence of the disaster, the extinction of the Orangutans: their population has dropped by more than 90% in a century on the island of Sumatra where the culture of the oil has spread.
⚠️⚠️ WHY DO INDUSTRIES PREFER PALM OIL TO OTHER VEGETABLE OILS?
Little by little, palm oil has replaced animal fats (lard, butter) and hydrogenated vegetable oils (rapeseed, soya) in the agri-food industry.
Why ? Because animal fats are more expensive and more difficult to work with. And because hydrogenated vegetable oils are unstable, sensitive to light and heat.
Finally, palm oil production costs less than its competitors and has a better yield - the tree produces fruit all year round and the latter contain 50% oil. Thus, to produce the same amount of oil, the palm monopolizes eight times less land than its competitors. It produces 4 tons of oil per hectare, compared to 0.6 tons for canola and 0.5 for soybeans.
