Full Fat Videos I agree with your video completely. Star Wars is like a giant Shakespeare play. You can feel the weight of the scenes. Only thing I’d add is Samuel Jackson adds his own theme and it amplifies Christopher Lee and Ian’s performances (or makes the scenes badass).

If you watch the prequels, but skip young anakin and jar jar entirely, then skip the love story part, it sounds crazy, but it's an amazing movie. Like A+. Just try it, any scene with Jar Jar in it as a character not background just skip, any seen with young anakin in phantom menace just skip, when they are on naboo in attack of the clones, skip it. You cut out about 1/4 the prequels but it makes the movies so much better.

George Lucas couldn't write romantic script for a soap opera, and he couldn't direct an actor to the catering table. He made Natalie Portman, Samuel Jackson and Liam Neeson into local theater rejects with his direction, script and choice of takes. Hayden is not to blame for that shitstorm.

@SwenglishGamer The line works better than it should, it works just barely, because he made it work that well. He looks at her and he makes that moment look better than it should. He shows how he feels about her, and his comment about sand tells us about his life and it even sounds a tiny bit profound by reminding us about his life up until now. @obi501 4 года назад
Did you ever hear the tragedy of Darth Plagueis the wise I thought not, it's not a story the jedi would tell you, it's a Sith legend. Darth Plagueis Dark Lord of the Sith, so powerful and so wise, he could use the force to influence the midiclorians to create... life. He had such a knowledge of the dark side that he could even keep the ones he cared about from dying. The dark side of the force is a pathway to many abilities some consider to be unnatural. He became so powerful, the only thing he was afraid of was losing his power, which eventually of course he did. Unfortunately, he taught his apprentice everything he knew and his apprentice killed him in his sleep. Ironic... he could save others from death. But not himself. Not from a jedi.

To me, Darth Vader yelling “NOOOOO” in RotS is actually very tragic. He’s in a mechanical suit, just learned he’s lost Padme in his gamble to save her, and when he just wants to scream out his frustration and despair, the only thing that comes out is this mechanical, off-putting, almost goofy yell. Which makes it even worse. Dude can’t even express himself in his moment of defeat

This is really interesting. Star wars has so many classic or theatre actors like this guy and the Obi Wan in the OT. They seem like a different class of actors, and i don't see their career really blowing up. I never even thought about how good Palpatine really was in the star wars movies, thinking he was just bland evil dude, but the performance took that old trope and gave it HOOTSPA. I guess the more impressive a talent is honed, the more subtle details of their expertise is lost on films.

That was all him too. He brought all of that malice to what is essentially, on paper, just a line that any other actor may not have delivered on. He was great from the start. I grew up with the Emperor just always being a fully formed thing. I grew up taking him for granted. As a child I didn't even think of it as an actor playing a part. He was just "The Emperor", and I only knew his name was Palpatine through various inquiries and questions to my parents and older cousins. "Who is the Emperor? Why does he look like that?" 18:26 a lot of people complain about this particular scene, but I like it. It puts the idea of Vader being “more machine than man” to context. After a long surgical process, from which in the end Anakin comes out relying on technology even to breathe or speak, he tries to move and talk as a way to express himself and cope with his own pain, but only articulates as a clumsy automaton. There’s no real emotion in his voice anymore. He’s trapped within his new body and can’t let out his emotions as before. Its the culmination of Vader’s ark and the death of Anakin not because the yelling sounds natural, but because it doesn’t.

My favorite part of the opera scene is Ian's silent contemplation for a second after Anakin says, "The Sith rely on their passion for their strength. They think inward, only about themselves." In later viewings you can get the sense he's putting the strings together. He knows that as long as Anakin is working out of servitude for Padmé and not himself, he can make him do anything and Anakin will see it as justified. Until it's too late, of course.

The only part I have to disagree with is claiming that Rogue One didn't justify its own existence. It wasn't a story that NEEDED to be told. True. But then, very few storie NEED to be told. Much of the EU, both disney canon and legends, after all, is completely superfluous to enjoying the movies. What I find so fantastic about the character of Palpatine is the flawless depiction of a narcissist/psychopath. Modern stories tend to prefer having complex villains who have tragic back stories that lead them to being evil, and I think this reflects our "humans are mostly good" philosophy. -Nobody chooses to be evil. I have dealt with a number of these types of personalities in my life. When somebody is willing to completely destroy another person's reputation, self-esteem, or even life for a slight edge on a fleeting desire, you can't call that anything less than evil. Palpatine doesn't care how many innocent lives he has to kill, torture, or send through hell, so long as it gets him what he wants, he will sacrifice the entire galaxy. Ian McDirmid portrays this character trait perfectly. Smooth, soft, gentle, and seemingly compassionate until it is too late. Then uncontrollable laughing from his inevitable victory.

Not only does Palpatine have the art of camp, if you read the novels, he's the master of the art of trolling. Seriously, the many RU-vidrs that are on Fanalysis have said that if he dropped all pretense then he'd be exactly like the robot chicken version of Palpatine. In the original Clone Wars, he constantly trolls everyone around him during the Battle of Coruscant (including Grevious who he had personally sent to the planet) which is made even weirder if you read Labyrinth of Evil where minutes before, he came running out of an elevator throwing aside his Sith robes after coming up from the basement where he killed some clones and an agent as Darth Sidious... 14:28 Also two things I'd like to say about this scene are: 1) The performance they watch is the same one Palpatine and Plagueis watched on the night Palpatine was talking about (with Plagueis getting incredibly drunk). 2) The chapter in Revenge of the Sith novel describes his smile as "a gentle smile of wisdom" despite how we all know how it looks.
@rickblaine9670
@rickblaine9670 4 года назад
The novel made Palpatine's evil far less evident, I guess in order for Anakin's fall to be more believable (mission accomplished). I mean, in the movie, he is BLATANTLY evil all the time (not for McDiarmid's fault, but the dialogues are what they are, as the video says). In the novel, on the contrary, his conversations with Anakin almost remember me of Dumbledore's conversations with Harry Potter in the HP's novels. Except that this Dumbledore is evil and is subtly corrupting the victim's soul. P.S. Which means that Palpatine is basically Dumbledore's wisdom and knowledge combined with Voldemort's lust for power and evil nature. Which is... pretty terrifying if you think about it.
@Jedi_Spartan_38
@Jedi_Spartan_38 4 года назад
@@rickblaine9670 yeah, some of his lines flip between the two positions in the novelisation, there's even a line where he offers CORELIA to Anakin (and he says either the planet or the system) and he basically says 'come on everybody let's do it' during the novel's version of his speech for establishment of the Galactic Empire.
@rickblaine9670
@rickblaine9670 4 года назад
@@Jedi_Spartan_38 Exactly. The "let's do it" to the Senate was maybe a bit too much lol :) but on the other hand, it was meant to estabilish that the Senate was completely corrupted and at his mercy by the end of the Clone Wars. He could have invited them all to punch themselves in the face and they would've done it with a smile.

Ian McDiarmid was trained in English drama school, and one of the things they always try to impress upon you, according to someone I know who goes to one, is that your character should always, in every scene, be acting to pursue a goal - Actioning. That qualify is what makes palpatine stand out in the prequels.

That's all acting schools, good ones anyway, no matter the nationality. That's not really why he stood out. He stood out because of his sheer commitment to it. He wasn't blocked by "this is bad dialogue" in his head like some of the other actors in the Prequels. He was completely free and in the moment.

I love the content! On one point: I never saw Obi Wan's decision to not kill his friend as cowardliness... Rather weakness born of compassion and dogma. I think Anikin called it himself when he killed General Trench... "I don't have such weaknesses"... Keep the content coming! :)

George Lucas is clearly a student of history. Palpatine seems to be a well put together combination of Hitler, Stalin, Julius Caesar, Caesar Augustus, Caligula and Diocletian. George also seems to have mirrored historical events when writing about Palpatines plans, for example, Order 66 is an obvious copy of the Night of the Long Knives. This is very effective, as it makes the events in an otherwise unrealistic fantasy land seem very plausible. The fans who criticised the prequels obviously knew Fuck all about the world around them to not see that

If Vader can move that fast normally why doesn't he in ESB or RotJ? He's Vader not a Force sensitive Xenomorph That's just shitting on your own cannon which is what a lot of Rogue One did. It's also the first Star Wars anything that didn't include the dialogue crawl that I've seen. It was the best thing Disney has done yes but when you add something like a ship that can cut a Star Destroyer in half you should probably explain why we never see it again. At least we know why we don't see Snowspeeders twice because the AT AT on Endor isn't in the battle and the speeders would likely hit the trees. Why not just have the next force sensitive person use the force like Goku and fire a kamehameha wave? It'd look cool but in a universe where no one has done it then it leads to questions.
