My first trip across the Atlantic was a 10 hour flight on the "polar route" (still a newish thing to do in '86) to Los Angeles. Unlike today, the pilots made en route announcements about landmarks including Reykjavík, Iceland and Greenland. The altitude for most of the journey was 29,000 ft. As fuel was used up and the aircraft became lighter, the 747 climbed to 33,000 ft over the Grand Canyon and into California.
Inflight movies were projected onto large screens on cabin bulkheads. Headphones were hollow hoses plugged into small holes in the arm-rests and the entertainment system gave a choice of music channels as well as the movie. Top Gun was the main feature film shown on both legs of this trip.
Before leaving I had read somewhere an airline had been giving a free glass of champagne. Alas when I walked up the aisle to see the spiral staircase to the upper deck, the cabin crew gave me the disappointing news it was not Pan Am...
I'd be grateful if you could give the video a 👍 and subscribe if you're new to the channel.
Tony Scott was hired to direct 'Top Gun' largely on the basis of this ad.... • Top Gun Nothing On Ear...

This is easily one of the best onboard videos of a Pan Am 747 from the 1980’s era. Thank you so much for posting this. I believe I flew on this aircraft in late 1980 from Heathrow to Kennedy when I was a child.

what a classic - a great way to remember those slow slumbering rotations and sluggish climbs over Staines on the old classic 100's

Absolutely Classic! Pan Am were quite simply, "The Best." I always found they flew where I needed to go and when I needed to go. The international cabin crew were a class above all other airlines....such a loss to the world of aviation and we should never forget what the world of aviation owes to Juan Trippe and his Pan Am.

Aahh, the days of “smoking sections”, when it didn’t matter where the cigarettes were. The whole plane stunk to high heaven of cigarettes.

Clipper Sparking Wave N741 PA - 121, construction number 19648 was delivered to PanAm on 2-28-70, as the 12th AC. off the production line. As of May 1989 she had 76,880.63 flight hours, and 17918 take offs and landings or (cycles). Because of her high use and not having a side cargo door , she probably was broken up in the early 90's as were other PanAm first generation 747-121AC.

N741PA was in NYC at the overhaul ctr in June until August 1989 being re fitted with replacement skins and other structural work. We had quite a time with totally eaten frames from toilet waste water that turned them into powdered junk. The jet was finished in August and lived until the mid 90s when it got scrapped at Marana AZ

Fantastic! Thank you for posting. I love hearing all of the announcements, especially the Worldpass one. I remember when they had a special menu for Worldpass members that you could order in advance. I used to get the "seafood meal".
@Ben-xe8ps
@Ben-xe8ps 2 года назад
Special meals could be requested by any passenger on all airlines for dietary or religious reasons. A seafood meal was one of the standard options along with various types of vegetarian meals, kosher meals etc

Juan T. Trip’s story was very sad. As it was the second 747 built by boeing and was the first ever 747 of Pan am.

I hate how when you search for Pan Am videos in RU-vid you don't hardly find shit. But then a week later videos like this pop up. Why don't these come up in initial searches?

A nice video. It brings back lots of fond memories. My first transatlantic flight was in '83, JFK-LHR on TWA. Wished it could have been on Pan Am, but still a wonderful experience. Empty seats, smoking sections (thank God that's gone); things have certainly changed 😎
@johannesbols57

A blast from the past! The smoking announcements are certainly vintage. 7:34 you see Windsor Castle clearly. On final approach I thought you stopped at JFK because the land was so unpopulated. Then I saw the restaurant at LAX and I realized how built up the Los Angeles area is since 38 years!

It’s hard to beleive thst cigarette smoking was permitted on aeroplanes! I remember as a child flying on one of these and desolately needed to go to the toilet but they were full. My dad snuck me into business class . I was amazed at the free plastic Combes razor blades, and toothpaste, brushes etc . I picked up a comb for myself , I was about 7 years old I didn’t actually realise you weren’t allowed to take one I just knew we weren’t supposed to go in the toilet . It was a different world. Pan am was the most iconic airline of the time. It’s unbelievable that just a few years later it would go bust.

Delivered to Pan Am as N741PA in 1970. To GATX/Airlog in 1990 and converted to a freighter. Reregistered as N494GX and back to N740PA in 1992. To Polar Air Cargo as N741SJ in 1993, Reregistered as N831FT in 1995. Withdrawn from use at Mobile, AL in 1996 and later scrapped.

Departures our of airports as busy as London/Heathrow with it's busy and often congested airspace usually requires to climb out in stages, once the flights have cleared the congested airspace within a certain area of the airport they climb to their cruising altitude. You can notice that at other busy airports as well, JFK being another good example
@jsmr451
@jsmr451 Год назад
Its heavy! Being the -100, I'm guessing it had the -7A motors fitted by then rather then the -3A's. Even so, the performance wasn't great especially on such a long leg.
