Love that old color footage! San Francisco to Hawaii on a piston powered flying boat, that must have been hell on the eardrums after a few hours. But they flew in style!
Considering that Pan Am was ferrying Naval officers (probably to Hawaii) as well as passengers in this film; and the Navy took control of Treasure Island and most of the Clippers in 1942. I think it's safe to assume this was prior to our involvement in WWII.
Mahalo nui loa, still fascinating seeing those formations. At that point in time it must have been aw inspiring to see and hear them. To think that we went from wood and fabric to all metal air craft in just a few short years and just 13 years since Lindbergh crossed the Atlantic. I got to work some of those A/Cs up the road a bit from Tucson, just fantastic machines! I work F-16's now, but I have to admit the WWII A/Cs were built with a lot more pride.
Hey thanks, I've seen a lot of footage but sometimes you get the idea in your head that it is at a point of time only to find out that it was earlier or later than you thought, if you know what I mean. Perception and history, without the facts or details can blur. I was stationed at Hickam AFB Hi. 15th FMS and I can relate to the history. Thank you again for your thoughts on this video.
In WWII the strides made in aviation were spectacular.More amazing, the US entered WWII with 6K planes, many nearly,or already obsolete. By war's end we had built 300K planes of all types and created the largest most dominant aerial arsenal (w/ A-Bomb) the world will ever know. Talk about imagining piston engines sounds. Can you imagine what it was like when 1338 bombers and 811 fighters flew overhead on the way to Cologne Oct '44? Over 6000 piston engines in the air at once? Awe inspiring!
