Nian gao (年糕) is a traditional Chinese New Year treat made from glutinous rice flour and brown sugar. It symbolize progress and moving forward in the coming year - a higher income, a higher position, the growth of children, and generally the promise of a better year. According to Chinese folklore, the Kitchen God is believed to reside in every house. At the end of every year, he makes his yearly report to the Jade Emperor. To prevent him from giving a bad report, his is offered sticky cake to glue mouth shut. This prevents him from spilling the beans on a family’s behavior throughout the year.
