A 13-mile (roundtrip) backpack to one of the best-preserved ghost towns in the country. There’s a reason for its great condition-the hike is a difficult one with some bushwhacking and an elevation gain of around 4,000 feet. Be sure to check the weather report before you go. If there’s a chance of thunderstorms in the Panamint Mountains, even miles away, it’s best not to go. Surprise Canyon is prone to flooding.
Directions:
Set your map app for “Ballarat.” Once there, turn left on Indian Ranch Road and go about two miles. Turn right on Surprise Canyon Road and take it for about 5.5 miles to the Chris Wicht Camp parking area at the end of the road. More often than not, you’ll need a 4x4 high clearance vehicle to do this drive. You can camp at the trailhead for an early start the next day.
