I went on my first solo backpacking trip to get a taste for what it's like, and I wanted to share the experience! It was a short and sweet trip - perfect for testing out all of my brand new gear, and getting a feel for what I'll be able to do in the future.
The trail I ended up doing in Virginia is called Mount Rogers and Appalachian Trail Loop.

That's quite the loadout for a first timer, clearly you did a lot of research. I think most everyone carries too much on their first trip, but if you were sitting around 30 lbs total that's pretty good for a first time, you just now know what it's like to bring a week's worth of food. Stick with your current base gear for a while until you figure out what you like and don't like. Everyone's preferences are different. I never could get comfortable on even the plushest of sleeping pads, so I use a hammock, for example. If your goal is to slow down and smell the roses so to speak, you might want to add a camp chair and more amenities for around camp. Lots of the backpacking youtube space is centered around thru hiking so it doesn't always give an accurate representation about what's best for weekend long trips where the goal is something other than miles.

Super true, and I’ve already picked up a nice lil camping chair that im probably adding to my list permanently, so im super excited about that! Im looking forward to seeing how it changes my trips here on out

Yeah, he's no innocent babe just deciding one day to wander into the woods. That's some well-researched, hella expensive gear.

Hammock and canopy are 100% the way to go if you’re backpacking. And I replace the tent weight with my camping chair. Little three legged fold out yanno.

Bro definitely decked the f out for the first time though lol. Hey for first timers they need that extra boost of confidence from the extra gear. I get it

@@brib9716 I'm putting together my first backpacking kit as someone who has MAYBE gone camping once every 2-3 years.. I've been doing research on RU-vidrs and subreddits since October about 3 ½ months ago. I like to fish every year, but haven't kept or processed my own and would like to start this year. I like being outdoors but admittedly don't go out enough, this obsession with hiking and backpacking came from my latent interests in fishing, camping, and identifying mushrooms. 😂 It's now mid January - My plan is get comfortable processing fish in the spring, start going camping again late spring/early summer, and then try a solo backpacking trip near the end of summer. I started with: Sleeping Bag, 32oz nalgene bottle, tent, tarp, an old folding knife, a hand saw, and a big SS Camping pot. When I go camping, it's usually with friends and I'm the asshole that brings lots of food but has nothing else to offer, and I hate it. I've since picked up: Tarp/Poncho, Full Tang Hunting knife, SS Cup & Mess kit, a slingshot incase I come across a rabbit or squirrel and want to try my luck - or just for passing time - a sawyer squeeze, chlorine tabs as a backup, an emergency radio, 100' of 750lb paracord, emergency reflective blanket, 80% wool blanket, backup fishing kit (hooks, weights, a couple lures, and a spool with 50' 10lb braid and 50' 6lb mono), picked up a dinky Coleman lantern, sharpal diamond sharpener, made a collapsible stove for cooking and small fires, picked up a molle bag with some molle attachments, a legit medkit (I used to rely on a dinky first aid kit I kept in my car) and some hemostatic gauze cause I suffer from vasovagal syncope which is the fancy way of saying I passout at my own blood. Was also given a good headlamp, lensatic compass w/ map of our province, and a hand auger as a Christmas gift. I'm certain there's more that I'm forgetting. And there's a few things on the list: New tent, matching footprint, walking sticks, and tourniquets still haven't been picked up 😅 maybe a Grant hatchet? I know I won't need all of it for backpacking, but I will need it all eventually. The way I see it, I can buy a low quality version of whatever I want, and then find a better version I need later on - or I can do my research upfront and only buy the one thing that Id end up with anyways. Which is why I picked up an Ikejime kit, even though I've never processed my own fish. I know it's the best method, so I may as well shell out some money and learn to do it from the get-go. 😅 All of this is just to say: because someone is well researched and has spent a pretty penny doesn't mean theyre lying about their experience, if anything it says more about how little research you do in your own endeavors. 🤣

One thing i recommend doing is keeping your headlamp somewhere easy to reach, and not tucked away in a dry back in your backpack. When it gets dark sometimes you have to reach for it in almost complete darkness so then its good to know exactly where it is

Well done. I remember my first backpacking trip in Shenandoah National Park back in 2007. Something that I had desired to do since I was a kid. Then at 43 years old I did it and it was a successful 2 night trip and I absolutely loved it. I’ve done so many more trips since that year and every time I still get apprehensive the night before I head out. Not because of the negative possibilities during a trip so much but because I mostly go solo and that I’ll be out of my environment. Once I hike for about a mile from the trailhead, all that apprehension fully disappears and a beautiful calmness enters my soul…a particular calmness you experience only when solo backpacking. Thanks for the video.

Nice video. It brought back some feelings and emotions I had when I first started solo backpacking. I've been solo backpacking since I was 18 (I'm 67 now). No matter how long you do it there is always something to learn. Occasionally I still make stupid mistakes despite having over 50 years experience. Although I backpack with friends I savor my solo experiences. Despite going to some pretty remote places I always run into people. The only time I had multiple days of solitude was in the Uinta mountains in Utah were I didn't see anyone for 4 days. It was awesome. Keep at it!

I just came back from my 2 night solo backpacking in backcountry of Yosemite. I have mixed love and hate feelings about it. I love the raw and realness of survival, I’ve learned a lot of what I’m capable of. Sometimes I don’t realize it till I put myself in an experience like this. I hate the uncontrolled elements like weather and creatures. It’s not for the faint of heart and there’s a lot of unknown factors when doing it with or without others.
@MinnowTank
