I came accidentally over your review/comparison. Very thorough, competent, fair, professional. Great work, based probably on competencies and knowledge. Many thanks and congrats!

Thank you very much for this comprehensive and great review /competition of the two cameras. Mine the FZ1000, because of handling (to hold sony is a little bit harder, when you got huge hands), and the complete set of functions I ever dreamed of. After 3 years of searching, I now know, that I came home, here with this great camera. Again, many thanks for your video.

Five years later you're still helping people like me :) I'm on a tight budget so decided one of these in the $350 range might suffice nicely. Thanks for the helpful review.

Pros and Cons with both - nice video review - I assume Panasonic will fix exposure issue you brought out - I own two GX7s and the GX1 and exposure is spot on - so maybe just something with the FZ1000 - I think I would opt for the Panasonic FZ1000 - mainly for two reasons - the extra focal range and the few hundred dollars price difference - of course I would have preferred a smaller body - but I also like a good grip - so two super bridge cameras - but I think the FZ1000 and the GX7 and the GH4 and the GM1 show that Panasonic is a serious camera maker - it is not just Canon and Nikon - of course Sony is the king of the sensors

Very nice, fair review. I've never used the Sony, but I rented the FZ1000 and loved it. It's a little chunky, but light enough and comfortable to hold, and the image quality is great. The Sony looks great too, but is more expensive. You probably can't go wrong with either.

fantastic review. You really know what potential buyers are looking for and explain clearly how to get around some of the common pitfalls in both camera. From what I gather, Sony is a better camera for taking pictures while Panasonic is more versatile with better video capability. I think Sony RX10 with 200 mm zoom at constant 2.8 F with a better light meter is an ideal choice for travel photography however it is a pity that it costs more than Panasonic.

Great review. In 2022 the Sony price in the UK is still £1400 or 1600 Euros. I've just bought the FZ1000 Mark 2 for only £650 - far less than half the price. While the RX10 has very slightly better image quality the FZ nearly matches it but has a better menu system and better autofocus.

Thank you for a good review. I have a Sony Cyber-shot DSC HX400 Digital Camera. I was thinking to buy the Sony RX10. Still not sure but I think your review helped.

Brilliant review.In the UK the Sony is 3x the price of the Panasonic. The main difference to me is the smaller camera size of the Sony , and its nice to have a zeiss lens but image quality look similiar. I have the Vario Sonnar on the DSC R1 which is still superb image quality on low iso. Now I think the Panasonic is the far better deal. Thanks for making my mind up. Regards, Mike from Manchester.

Biggest difference - "At what point does the FZ1000's lens begin to slow down optically below f2.8? The answer is in fact very quickly. In my tests, the FZ1000 only offers f2.8 at 25mm. At 26mm it slows a fraction to f2.9, then to f3 at 30mm, f3.5 at 57mm and finally to f4 at 175mm all the way to 400mm. This means at 175mm, the RX10 is brighter at all but the very widest focal lengths, and by 175mm the Sony is a whole stop faster." Quoted from Cameralabs.com

There are many older people who may well find (as I did) that the RX10 was much easier to adjust for major things like F Stop and Exposure compensation. Older fingers tend to be less agile and I found the FZ1000 difficult to use due to the wealth of buttons. I fully appreciate that for many users my comments are not relevant, mind you, a lot of oldies tend to have money to buy the RX10

Did you like battery life of fz1000? How many spare batteries do we need for all day random video shooting?

Great review. I opted for the Panasonic. Great for 4k but it does require massive dada processing and storage, thus drains the battery very quickly. Pulling an 8 megapixel image from the video is a great option, especially when you can never get the timing right for the perfect shot!

Which one had the best 1080p ?
@igetsmart
@igetsmart 9 лет назад
Both nice - but I would opt for Panasonic FZ100 - the longer range - 4K - more Fn buttons - nice LCD which can be flipped to protect LCD while not in use and tilted for front view - and of course FZ1000 is few hundred dollars cheaper

I have recieved my Panasonic FZ1000 today and I must say it's a beast of a camera with splendid Electronic VF, like you are looking through an optical viewfinder. For the amount of money I payed for the FZ1000 I couldn't be more happy, I think exposure of the pictures are pretty well (I shoot raw and jpeg) and the 4K video is really the big hit for 2015 I think (4k to 1080p is way more detailed for example). I ordered it on Amazon with 2x 64GB SDXC memory cards and I ordered also 3 extra batteries because 4K video really goes fast in data and power consumption. I unscrew the camera always from my tripod (I don't use a quick release plate but a Manfrotto junior head for panorama's) so the position of the tripod mount does not really bother me really. The headphone jack is missing but that's not really a big deal either, more important is the mic connector so I can record binaural with a Roland binaural headphone/microphone. I just need an external flash now because the pop up flashes are way too weak and you can't flash indirect to the ceiling or walls (I get a used Metz flash soon). The possibility to make Timelapse video's and stopmotion video's right in the camera is great as well (something I miss on my Canon 6D while many Nikon DSLR's also got that on board).

Both cameras have a tiny 8.8mm sensor so they should be wonderful for a child to use. Senior citizens will like this over the outdated brick dslrs. If your TV is not 4K or want a fast lens, get the Sony. But if you want a faster lens, get the ATG/Zeiss DSC-RX10 with the 24-200/2.0.

ENG camera's prices f.i 80.000 dollars ore more have sensors smaller than 8.8 mm. Are these also for children?

Cheaper and 4K video did it for me. I do like the look of the Sony better but like the gentlemen said you can't go wrong with either.

Video is one thing, photos are another. I've reviewed cameras who have great video yet suck at photography and the opposites who are great photo-making machines and have absolute crap video. I will soon publish review on my blog of this camera, you will be able to download full res samples shown in this video.

Panasonic has a lot of flaws. The sounds of the lens and the work that they record for the focus on the film. Blur the wideo with the zoom ring. And more.
