And, it seems to do a great job of upscaling standard blurays to 4k. We watched an old bluray nature documentary and it looked very good upscaled by the player to 4k.

Yes - It is a very good player. A worthwhile upgrade over the usual cheap rubbish sold in most chain stores

Picked one up last week for under $700 AUD to run with my Sony 4K tv. Maverick has never looked better 😁

Yes - Good content like Maverick deserves a good player! It looks flat and lacks "life" on NetFlix

are Blu-ray players sold in New Zealand region free? (I know this doesn't matter with 4K discs)

Region free for DVD yes, but would need a mod to be bluray region free.
