Thanks for the review, i bought a DP-UB450 for my Lg C1 and it has a very solid picture quality, i dont' need all that hdr tweaks from a player and i don't like disturbing displays or Apps i already have on my C1, yes the DP-UB450 has a cheap looking but it is much smaller and thin, almost invisible. Who cares when the picture quality is so high. I did not choose it for the price, i have no problems in buying the more expensive 820 but i dont pay for things i do not need. I was impressed with HDR Blu-Rays and the Full-Hd Blu-Ray upscaling is exceptional. I liked your review because in this comparison you documented the differences. Well done !

@@alyxoj1361 I am still very pleased with my player. It has served me well. The only shortcoming is it's limited file support when used as a media player. But disc wise it's good. @@bitnisse7186 I have a couple of 4:3 ratio discs and this Panasonic can't change the aspect ratio to make it full screen. We have to put up with black bars on the left and right sides of the screen. Also the irritating buffering circle on screen every time you load a disc and it makes a weird loud noise when loading a disc as well. It's unacceptable for a powerful player like this.

Great review! Quick question, does the UB820 display a the time at front the when on standby? I've noticed that 4K Blu-Ray players don't seem to have that feature for some reason which is a shame as it is convenient for the living room. This will be the deciding factor between the UB450 and the UB820 because if the UB820 doesn't display the time when on standby it is not worth me spending the extra money when the UB450 otherwise meets my requirements. Thanks

Nice review. The HDR to SDR down-conversion on the 820 is class leading in my humble opinion. Ok it’s not built (and doesn’t look as pretty) like the 9000 or even the 900. But it’s better performing than the 900 and IMO just as good as the 9000 when it comes to ‘video’. It’s absurdly good value for money for everything video. And an extremely important player if super sampling is still/also important to you.

I bought the ub820 on black Friday. Surprised to find it had the latest firmware out of box. It performs exceptionally. But i don't like how if "vieralink" (cec) is enabled, it forces itself to be the main input when everything is turned on. I only have time to enjoy discs on the weekends. So the rest of the week, I'm forced to switch inputs upon powering up, or disabling CEC on the UB820, which forces me to use the UB820 remote, and do the remote juggling.

If I buy a 4k dolby vision bluray player that decodes these metadovers, would I have the equivalent of dolby vision on my TV? Hey Alan! First of all, thank you for your comment and mentioning that Gladiator is available in Dolby Vision - I've just purchased myself a copy :). I expect to receive GZ950 probably the end of next month so I will check out picture controls and so on. Have you tried different picture presets while TV is in Dolby Vision mode? UB820 BD player has HDR Optimizer function that makes image brighter in HDR and you can tweak it more than UB450, but if you find HDR10 content OK and DV not OK, then probably something is not correct with picture settings. BTW - how is deep color output set on your player - is it on Auto (12bit priority)?

Thanks for the helpful video! I'm trying to decide between this and the Sony UPB-X700 and was hoping someone might be able to answer a few questions: - Does this player support DTS:X? And does it automatically choose between this / Dolby Atmos depending on the disc (and same question for Dolby Vision / HDR10)? - If yes, then if I connect via HDMI to a soundbar (LG SL10YG) which connects to the TV (LG C9) will those still be automatically selected? - Preference between the two players? Apologies for the picky questions, just don't want to regret my purchase!

Hi Giles! Thanks for watching! Panasonic UHD BD players do support DTS:X and they will automatically switch to Dolby Vision based on content metadata. SL10YG seems to be able to pass through Dolby Vision content, but at max 24 Hz which is perfectly fine for movies - www.reddit.com/r/Soundbars/comments/evtstm/lg_sl10yg_dolby_vision_passthrough/ I own DP-UB820 and except for archaic menus, I like it very much.

I just switched from the UBP-X700 to a region-free modded UB820 (the UB450 isn't available here in the U.S.), and I totally agree. All Sony 4K players with Dolby Vision require manually turning it on & off in the settings to avoid unwanted DV processing on non-DV discs; nearly all other 4K players with DV will activate it only as needed so long as DV is on in the settings. (Same for HDR10+; AFAIK Pannys from the UB450 up are the *only* players that support both DV & HDR10+. Panasonic even claims to support HLG on discs though I thought that was strictly for broadcasting, cable, etc.; I don't know of any discs with HLG.) And *any* Blu-ray player (regular or 4K) that can bitstream DTS-HD Master Audio (the vast majority of them) can also bitstream DTS:X, which is just DTS-HD MA with metadata. (Same for Atmos on discs which is just TrueHD with metadata.)

Sorry to jump on, I have a Sony oled and the HDR Optimisor has definitely made 4k blu rays look better, even on a top end TV like ours. The player's upscaling on standard blu rays is also improved. Are you absolutely sure that it is not just upscaling everything to 4K, as opposed to being native (recently borrowed word!) and is not in fact playing without adjustments made to videos, at 2k? You see, it is only the title (not specifications) showing on Amazon that states the term 4K UHD (with that specific wording), whereas on all other retail sites the wording reads as '4K/HD'.

Thank you for the comparison! One question as I'm new to standalone players. By connecting both the player and a PC via LAN cable would I be able to create a network between the 2 of them which would allow me to access from the player all the PC shared folders? The reason I'm asking is because I'm considering the UB450, but copying content from PC to flash drive and then inserting it in the player isn't an option given that UB450 only has USB2.0 port (major drawback in my opinion) and is unable to play high bitrate 4K content. So if I can't play content from PC via LAN cable, UB450 is not an option for me.

@TVguyDarko
@TVguyDarko 4 года назад
@@BizkitBoy86 Hi - yes, that's an issue with players in general. But the solution here is to merge video file with subtitles in the MKV container. You can do that with MKVToolNix.
@BizkitBoy86
@BizkitBoy86 4 года назад
@@TVguyDarko Indeed, that is one solution but unfortunately it's not viable in every scenario. For example, MKVToolNix is unable to keep Dolby Vision metadata intact when muxing to MKV. The only container known so far to be able to do that is MP4 and - wouldn't you know it - it doesn't allow muxing in any subs. This is actually the main reason I'm considering this player... to be able to play files with Dolby Vision layer on my GZ2000 because I have this amazing TV and I'm not using it to its full potential.
