I every possible configuration when I compare stabilisation gx80 vs g80, the gx80 wins it doesn't have this "stickiness" issue. I checked with, without electronic stabilisation. (in my video E stabilisation is off on both cameras. Lenses I use have the latest firmware, I updated lenses - 1235 f2.8, 14140, 1260, 45mm 1.8. My Gx80 has latest firmware which when I uploaded did improve already good stabilisation. G80 has the firmware 1.0 and there is no update on Panasonic website. when tested lenses which support dual IS the "dual IS" Ikon is presented on the screen. I am testing apples with apples- and I know there is something wrong, what I didn't know is whether it is problem with my camera only.
Why I still keep this camera

Hey I had the same issue with my G9. I knew it didn't happen in the beginning and then I realised happened because I changed one setting. Go to settings - stabilizer - I.S. lock (video) and switch it OFF ☺

Good to see the stabilization qualities of the GX85. I'm considering a gimbal to further reduce distracting movements, but the qualities of the in-body stabilization does not have me in any rush. Thank you for the clip.

Hey Marcin, I was using a 12-35 with the O.I.S and body stabilizer turned on. It started to jitter and then move like it was trying to catch up with my movements, exactly like your video. I turned the camera on and off and it seemed to work fine for the rest of my night. I love the GH5 perfect for my work style, just the other night when it played up it gave me quite a fright.

Man, that is such a bummer. I've been looking to upgrady my GX80 to the G80 for all the reasons you mentioned along with better handling and weathersealing. I've been waiting for my local store to get it in so I could try it out before I buy since I don't buy cameras before handling anymore, for reasons like this. Hopefully this is a software issue that they can and will fix, lets hope. Thanks for sharing this Marcin.

The main difference in terms of stabilization electronics, afaik, is the use of a more sensitive gyro, for "dual2". Chances are that they need to re-tune the thresholds to differentiate intended and unintended movements to the values the new sensor delivers. Fingers crossed.

Thanks. I never use 96fps. vlog is nice but takes too long in post and has purple noise in sky shots. I have used the high bit rate 1080, 50p a fair amount but.... have lost a lot of time to stabilisation issues using the 25mm. In an ideal world I'd have two bodies, G80 and GH5. I suspect the price on the GH5 will kill that dream lol.

Jeremy's review on B&H, he wrote: "To get smooth, stabilized video on the G85, youll want to disable lens stabilization and only use the cameras 5-axis IBIS. Power O.I.S. lenses are notorious for micro-jitter in video mode, although theyre fantastic for sharp photos. Mega O.I.S. lenses are much smoother for video but dont currently work with Dual IS II. That leaves you with the G85s IBIS, which works beautifully. Pair the IBIS with a light rig (I usually forgo a proper rig altogether and just use a Cullman Magnesit Copter butted up against my shoulder at a 90 angle like a rifle with the cameras LCD flipped out and angled up at my face), and Im confident youll be pleased with the results" In the end this is the great camera !

That's helpful info thanks. I have the G80/85. I was starting to get worried with people's comments regarding jittery video. Would you recommend turning the E-Stabilization ON for video too when hand-holding? I also can hear a constant low humming/whirring sound when the camera is on, I take it that's normal?
@GayBoucheryGonzague
@GayBoucheryGonzague 7 лет назад
But... and correct me if I am wrong... the Body ONLY Has 3-axis Stabs, the 5 is achieved when used in combination of the LENS O.I.S and the Camera IBIS. At least is what my GX7 MKII Manual says! Now you can turn on IBIS (3 axis) and the Digital Stab but it further crop the video.
@VoicesofMusic
@VoicesofMusic 7 лет назад
To get IS for video get the GX85.
7 лет назад
Nope. The body has 5-axis image stabilization. When a lens with stabilization is attached the camera, the lens and camera works together to try and find the best way of stabilization on those two axises, leaving the 3 other axies working on their own. :)
@TokyoStreetView
@TokyoStreetView 7 лет назад
I would not say the "BODY" has 5-axis STAB, this is misleading and contradict what you are just saying after. To get 5 Axis you need the BODY and a LENS. Mount the Leica 15 or 12mm for Example or even the 7-14mm and you only have 3 axis. Now... Since Pana is also selling this camera in a Kit with a I.O.S lens they can indeed says that this camera comes with 5-axis stab... but not the body alone.

Marcin, thanks for all you've done to get this IBIS issue addressed by Panasonic. I already returned my G85, because Panasonic had not fixed the issue. But now that they have, I'm probably going to go buy it again. Could you please do another comparison test with the new firmware? I've watched several tests of the new firmware that have been posted by other people, but honestly, they are pretty useless. They don't show a side-by-side comparison like you did. So there's no way of knowing what is hand-held jerkiness and what is the sensor movement. Thanks!

Just got the G85 (USA) and haven't done any critical image stabilizer testing yet but will look into that. I have a much older GH2 so I guess I could rig up a test jig like you did and compare the much older GH2 to the G85. The 25mm f/1.7 doesn't have stabilization built into the lens so if you're seeing issues with the G85 and the 25mm lens it could only be the in camera stabilization and not the lens or the camera and lens working against each other.

So I guess no response yet from Panasonic? You've had how many other users confirm the same problem? I am just about to buy the G85 (by around November 13th), but if there's no update if Panasonic can and when they might fix this by firmware update, then maybe I will just delay getting it, or perhaps consider getting a Sony a6500, what do you think of the Sony a6500 vs Panasonic G85? It seems the Sony with lens is quite a bit more expensive. And the Sony a6500 seems not available before December.. I have previously used a GH3 for about 3+ years (terribly out of focus handheld, often on my Steadicam Merlin with arm), and in the last 5 months I have been mostly using the Sony AX53 camcorder with partial BOSS IBIS in 4K, full BOSS IBIS which they advertise is only at 1080p (I only care to do 4K).

Will you send the camera back or will you wait for a possible firmware fix? If it's a hardware issue then Panasonic has a big problem on their hands, I was thinking of buying this camera (mostly for video use) but I'm definitely waiting until this gets resolved, those jerky movements just ruin the footage when panning.

Thanks for the video, it demonstrates the issue very well.I bought my g80 specifically for video, on the strength of Panasonic's reputation in this area but have been very disappointed with the quality of stabilized panning video, compared to their other recent models.I immediately noticed the same problem with my g80 and have contacted Panasonic to ask whether they intend to fix this issue. I received a prompt reply which effectively dismissed my query. I have replied back asking for further clarification and am still waiting a reply.Please could anyone else who see's this problem report the issue to Panasonic. If enough Panasonic users complain then maybe they will do something about it.

Informative video, great side by side comparison. I've owned the G80 for two weeks now. The stabilization is nice for (lowlight) stills, and handheld fixed video shots. Panning however causes this jittery movement. To me it seems that there is a bigger 'margin' for stabilization of stills and relative still video shots, as in, the stabilization mode compensates for more unwanted movement. However, this causes the 'delay' we see in panning video shots: the first part of the pan is stabilized as if it were a still shot, which then gets 'corrected' by a very sudden and fast movement into the pan. IBIS was one of the main reasons to get the G80 instead of the GH4 for me as well. If this can't be fixed I'll have to use an external stabilizer anyway, in which case I might as well return the G80 to get a GH4. What do?

I'm curious, do you have it both set to AFC? Could the focus be set on AFS on the GX80? It feels like it's trying to make the image hold still in one position rather than smoothing out a change in direction when doing a pan. In other words, the stabilization on the GX80 seems to be for video while the G80 stabilization would be better for photos.

Hi, I have the G80 with the 12-35mm lens, and I had also noticed this over-zealous stabilisation making the image 'stick' when panning. For video, by simply switching of the lens OIS, it has stopped this happening. So I guess, Dual IS is fantastic for stills, as this gives another stop or so, but for smooth vide, only use IBIS.

Thank you so much!!! Since I'm on a tight budget, 1000€ is my max, I'm really torn! I could get the gx80 with 12-32mm for 630€, with 14- 140mm for 850€ Is the 14-140 worth the price, also since I could almost get the g81 (g80) for the same price. With a 12-60mm the g81 is 950€. I mostly do videos and music videos with time laps and speed ramping and a little fotography. Is the g81s more solid body worth the up price? Is the movable screen such an adventage when filming and keeping it scratch free? I also like the smaler body of the gx80 and would like to keep a more pancake like lense so I could carry it with me more comfortable. Also the gx8 is now in the mix with 12- 60mm for 1000€!? What combo would you sugest? Thank you for the advice, I really appriciate it!!!

I can't reproduce that bounciness on my G81. It doesn't smooth out directional changes on pans as well as your GX85 footage but there's no getting randomly stuck or jumping. Tested both with both 1235 and 1260. Sounds like there may be some bad production runs. EDIT: Can now reproduce it, seems to be triggered when the motion is very slow and linear speed. This definitely needs a firmware fix fast.

@vangual
@vangual 7 лет назад
Ah now I was able to reproduce it, it appears my usual pans are just fast enough and not linear enough to not trigger it. Once I go really slow and linear speed I see the same issue. I think that's just a tuning issue that they can fix with a firmware upgrade. (Not defending them here or downplaying the issue.)

I had a pre production G80 that I used extensively for video and I can't say I noticed any jumping around. However, I was not using stabilized lenses, only Kowa primes. Try turning off the stabilization on the lens and use just the body stabilization, does it make a difference? Also, I'll make sure the guys at Panasonic see this video. Cheers

Ok.. That's not cool! I'll definitely make sure they are aware of this. I'm actually with the engineers in Japan later this month so I'll show them your video. I'm guessing its an issue that they are already aware of though to be honest (they do monitor social media) and more likely than not its an issue that can be solved with a firmware update.

It looks like a software problem. My olympus e-pl7 IBIS behavior is similar, because it's not optimized for video and won't be. I think that panasonic didn't have time to optimize IBIS and will fix it soon

Great video, thanks for posting. Does the same problem with stabilisation apply to stills? I was thinking about the G80 as a second body, largely for birding as I want the better IBIS and reduced/no shutter shock over my existing GX8. This kind of jerkiness would destroy finer detail in stills if it exists.

I just got my new G85 today and am seeing the same issue. This would NOT be an issue if Panasonic had done their job correctly before they released their new camera. And I soooo wanted to love this new Panny. If I don't see anything in terms of a firmware update or announcement within the week to fix this, I'm returning it and going with the new Oly when it comes out, and I'm recommending that our studios steer clear of Panasonic as well.

So if I use a tripod, will it be correct? NO! Video is jerking and bouncing. Is it a joke? I had GX80, it was great. Stabilization was beautiful, very smooth, even on tripod... But GX80 doesn't have mic input, little battery, and no battery grip.. So I sold it, and bought G80.. I'm really disappointed now.

Our company bought the G80 recently (Firmware 1.0) and 12-60mm (Firmware 1.1). When I first tried it shooting video, it was jumpy like yours and the screen displayed the Dual IS symbol only. I consulted the manual and it said you had to select E-Stabilisation to get the 5-axis combined. Once I'd switched that on in the menu the stabilisation was smooth and the screen now displayed the 5-axis hybrid symbol. I can't imagine you haven't done this unless your GX80 had it selected by default. Unfortunately, our camera has now gone off on assignment so I can't give you any hands-on information but hope this helps.

But to my understand turning on the electronic stabilization shouldne be necessary. As doing that will some what punch in the image to stabilize as opposed to just doing it optically.

Interesting. Yeah you seem to have bad luck with buying stuff. :) I have tons of bad luck in general... but usually not with buying things. My GX80 I'll probably get from MediaMarkt because they have like fifty of them in stock. They also have the G80. I only saw one... but there's like 50 MediaMarkts here in Berlin. Like you said, though, it's probably just bad firmware... which isn't going to do you any good if you have to shoot something RIGHT NOW.

I had the same problem with 14-140mm lens. I took it back to the reseller and they tested their store display model as well as opening another new box. Including mine, all three exhibited the same problem.

@@Camera_Addiction Grate thanks for your fast answer and this video. It's really interesting question and for me now. What bad are in GX80? Now with your experience. Battery life is very bad? Usability? Screen? Color of picture in the same PP? What is difference? Comparing between both of this cameras? Thank You Very Much.

Marcin you should add a post to mu-43.com and report what you have found. As we can see from the answers you have gotten here, this is a general problem and it would be great to get input from more G8x users on the issue. Also Panasonic follow the discussions there, so it might push a fix out faster.

It's probably the IS algorithm, so I guess that as people let Panasonic know, soon there should be a firmware update coming, hopefully. I don't think Panasonic would let it be without fixing it, IBIS is one of the selling points of this camera after all.

MySchizo Buddy i know it sounds like overkill but a gimbal can always probe to be useful imho, e.g. shots very close to the ground as you are walking. However, my question was if a gimbal could somewhat counteract this issue? At least until they *hopefully* fix it

Just so everyone knows...I just got off the mu-43 forum and have some apparently bad news. A couple of folks made face to face contact with Panasonic reps and the reps are claiming that they have heard nothing about stabilization issues with the G85 and that the camera is just fine. In other words, unless these reps really are clueless (which seems highly unlikely), Panasonic is going to screw their customers and offer NO fix for the G85. I sincerely hope that I am mistaken and that a fix is on the way ...but Panasonic is NOT responding to any requests on any of the forums so I must assume bad intent on their part. I'm waiting one more week and then returning this G85.

Marcin Rucinski because I'm trying to figure out if the IBIS would work as it has to move around in the sensor. Would it fully cover the frame on the metabones 0.71x?
@buczy3470
@buczy3470 7 лет назад
Marcin Rucinski so every time I turn off the camera and change zoom and turn it on again, the camera will need that info again? Also I have the Canon version of the metabones which can autofocus with lenses and can send info such as focal length to the camera.
@NunoCortinhal

I agree with Marcin, don't see why wouldn't work, my speedbooster has that multiplication and have no problems with it.

The G80 “bounce around when panning cause the IS on the lens is continues correcting the panning, so when you record on tripod and panning you must disable IS. But hay, maybe you got a faulty camera or if Panasonic released this camera with this major problem, then its gonna be a major fail for them... Return this crappy camera and get the Sony A6500

+Marcin Rucinski - I've spent a small amount of time looking into this issue. There's *2* Videos where this complaint is made (and a related Article where the person went to return the Camera and the Store checked the rest of their Stock, finding 3 more affected Cameras). Just an educated guess, no promises (nor do I work for Panasonic). We might know in a week. Love it, wait. Hate it, return it. YT, Rob

It looks like the stabilisation module is increasing creepy rolling shutter effect (but maybe it is a bug related to cropping pixel sensor readout or problems with electronic shutter). Anyway, I hope that issue will be fixed with new firmware for this model of camera.

you can disagree as much as you wish is still a cheap camera and a micro 4/3 on top of that ,is like filming trough a bathroom key hole....but I am attracted to them as well not because of the quality but the price...And i kind of know how to work my way around micro 4/3. these cameras a re good for hippies or people that just begin to film not for a serious videographer but due to the price...they will have to do for now.

I totally agree with you my friend that every camera is a professional camera as long as you make money with it. My videos are crap in my own eyes and that's due to the equipment I have but yet I get paid really well for my weddings that I do and my customers seam very happy with the work that I do. i only wrote on your video when I've noticed you complaining about you stabilisation in your own camera and all I said is look at the price. There is always a connection price quality. No serious camera manufacturer would build and sell a fantastic camera at this price. Yes G80 is a great camera FOR IT'S PRICE but this doesn't make it a professional camera on a DSLR market. I want to buy a Panasonic G7 and that's not because is a good camera but because is cheap light and has a lens in front of it and I know I can work around it's short comings. I call a professional camera a camera that is full frame , has 4k at least 60 fps and a log that I can easy grade and a perfect dual focus like Canons and there is such a camera but comes with a price £4500 just for the body. It's called Canon 1DX mark 2. If i would have the money I would go for that camera but since I haven't I would have to be happy with a Panasonic G7. Hope that helps.

Thanks Marcin for doing such a thorough test and comparison so soon after product launch. I can't afford to wait and see if they fix this soon so I took it back to my reseller and showed them my tests as well as yours to make it clear that an exchange would reproduce the same issue. They were quite shocked how horrible it looked and gave me a refund after a few words. If Panasonic fixes this, I will probably repurchase since I liked everything else about the camera. Again, thank you.
