I would much rather have fast autofocus like on the Sony than the stabilizer on the Panny. For most situations the autofocus will be a more needed function for most people.
@h00b00
@h00b00 8 лет назад
Totally agree. I do corporate shoots with the older A5100 (199 phase detect points) and more than anything, it's the autofocus that does the most in making a one-man shooter's life easy! IS is important but you can always get a mechanical stabilizer/gimbal for that but AF can't be improved short of a full camera upgrade. Recently, I rented out the A7S II for an event and the high-ISO advantage was quickly forgotten after spending considerably more effort getting things in focus. I'll be eagerly saving up for A6300 because I feel it really strikes a great balance in everything. And no, overheating is not an issue for me :)

This is a great comparison as I have lenses for both systems and was considering both. Each has advantages over the other. I chose the GX85. The lack of in-body stabilization on the A6300 was the deal breaker for me. But clearly the AF system is superb. The Panasonic seems to check off more boxes and appears to be a nice small, well-rounded camera.

If it's in RAW, you can use EXIFtool to edit the black level, or most software has an adjustment for it. Adobe calls it a shadow tint slider, available where the camera profiles were located pre-2018. If it's in video, any decent editing software will allow you to alter the tint of the shadows. At worst, you can use curves to alter the color more precisely.

Thanks for the video. My first camera was the sony a6000 and decided to sell it to get a6300 but instead bought the gx85. Had it for a year and i must say that i loved it. Especially used it for portraits along with the 25mm crisp color and sharp that is until you zoom in on the picture. Even though it has horrible AF vlogging with it was pretty okay. This is not for sports. Everything else is cherry though. I definitely recommend this camera and spend a little more on a couple of nice glass. The kit is not gonna give you good quality videos or pictures. Unfortunately i sold my gx85 and later on bought a sony a6300 with a 50mm and never looked back.

The autofocus on the sony " under those conditions" was better , but if you are into videography in a serious way and you spend large amounts of time editing a grading then this shouldn't make a jot of difference to you, because you really ought to manually focusing and composing shots in a far more controlled manner anyway. I prefer the overall look of the gx80 the sensor and lens stabilisation system far outweighs the slower autofocus under certain conditions. The Sony's larger sensor also crams in more pixels, thus what would be better light gathering capabilities are lost in favour of being able to crop a little more on photos. Using both on kit lenses and filming 1080p the gx80 allows a wider 24mm equivalent starting point than the Sony's approx 28mm. Using 4k a video crop comes into play, that's something you'd need to read up on if you wanted to know the focal lengths. Something to bear in mind is when newer models are launched crop factors on 4k video changes. Sometimes a newer camera with more megapixels means a bigger crop and a less wide starting point on 4k video. The reason I'm using a 5 year old camera, I need the wider angle it provides me something which if I bought the newer model I'd lose. It's not something which can be added as a feature without a huge draw back. Much the same way as a bigger sensor needs a much bigger, heavier lens to reach the the same distance as a smaller sensor

I was waiting for someone to do this. Congratulations on being the first. I was leaning towards the GX85 and probably still am, but my main focus will be more video than photography. You mentioned that the Sony had better DR when it came to video. That being said, would you still choose the GX85 over the 6300? I plan on purchasing one of these cameras this weekend and I think you're the guy to ask. Thanks in advance.
@MathieuGasquetMirrorLessons
@MathieuGasquetMirrorLessons 8 лет назад
It depends how important your video work with the camera will be and what you are planning to do with it. With the Sony you have more DR and more options to customize the look of your image (picture profiles). S-log2/S-log3 are interesting if you like to color grade in post. So I would say that for more serious video work, the a6300 delivers a better image if you take the time to find the optimal settings, which is not necessarily easy to do at first (it depends on the level of experience you have with video). The GX80 has less advanced video options but the 4K quality is still excellent and the camera is easier to use straight away. I could use it for travel for example. Plus the in-body stabilization can be very helpful even with adapted lenses. With the Sony you will need an optional rig/stabilizer which means extra investment. For personal stuff like family and kids running or action/sports, the a6300 will do better concerning AF so that can be another point to consider. It will be important to have a lens with optical stabilization to have decent footage if you don't use a tripod.

Judging the high ISO test on my 32 inch 4K monitor the A6300 retains noticeably more detail at high ISO and the dynamic range is much better (look at the wheels of the train, with the Pany it's crushed black but the Sony still shows a lot of detail there), the Panasonic also applies a lot of noise reduction to the video, it looks more like 1080p at high ISO, but still very good for a 2x crop sensor. The rolling shutter test is interesting, it's almost the same amount yet everybody keeps bashing the A6300 on it's rolling shutter while almost every camera has it, especially at 4K. The GX85 has an amazing bang for the buck, and it adds IBIS and a touchscreen which the A6300 lacks.. for ultimate sharpness, dynamic range and fast continuous autofocus the A6300 is the way to go though.
@motionpoint5809
@motionpoint5809 8 лет назад
You need to research the GX85 and G7 a little more before saying the A6300 is the way to go. I had the A6300 and have the G7. The Sony auto focus is not perfect and it still has to hunt at times. The G7 and GX85 can pull focus from the touch screen during 4K recording and the test in this video with the person running towards the camera needs to have focus tracking on the persons face, then see how well the G7 or GX85 can keep up. Rolling shutter at times for both the A6300 and G7 or GX85 is the same but what's not the same is how much the A6300 screen will distort and have unusable jello effect with the slightest camera movement. Shooting at 30fps helps reduce the jello effect on the Sony.

Nice comparison. The Sony have obviously better video quality but the price was also double the gx80/85. I have no experience with the Sony, but I can tell the IBIS in my gx80 is amazing. Some of my handheld shots looks like they have been done on a tripod, and I have very shaky hands (too much coffee). Not sure yet about a video comparison (I have lots to finish already LOL). Concerning the two cameras: I think I would go for the GX85. I love the IBIS and the smaller form factor. It's an excellent hybrid camera for photo and video and I prefer the overall user experience (menu system, dials, etc). I could consider the a6300 for sports or wildlife (birds in flight especially) once there are more native telephoto lenses like a 100-400mm. The AF of the Sony camera is really excellent and makes a difference for fast moving subject. The larger sensor gives you something more in terms of IQ (dynamic range, high ISOs) but m4/3 can be fine for many applications.

Lens stabilisation definitely helps. You won't get the same results as Dual IS but it's better than nothing and some lenses have a good OSS. The advantage of in-body IS of course is with non stabilized lenses like most Sony primes.

There's a GX80 kit that includes the 12-32 and the 35-100. Both are excellent lenses... they may be affordable, but the image quality is very good, they feel good (significantly better than kit lenses from Canon or Nikon), and they are TINY. Like half the size of my Pentax lenses with a comparable focal range... and significantly sharper too. Add a prime or two and you should be good to go. That being said, if you don't need the small size, do yourself a favor and get a G85. It's better in every single way (from what I can tell). Quieter, better viewfinder, much more ergonomic, more buttons for quick access (the GX80 has so many features I want to access quickly that I can't find enough buttons for them). And having to do maybe 5-10 button presses to change from AF to MF isn't fun, with the G85 you flick a switch. Done.

@BlueBomberTurbo
@BlueBomberTurbo 6 лет назад
Tracking won't improve anything. DFD is only CDAF, so it needs to bob in and out first, in front and behind the subject, in order to determine focus. With something moving, it just can't do that fast enough. If it did, the video would look like it was constantly pulsing at a very high rate. Sony's (and Canon's) PDAF doesn't need to check focus like that, so it can continually focus track without any artifacts.

The Sony is superior no doubt. I opted for the cheaper GX85 though because of the fact that it doesn't have overheating issues on video and there was a better deal going on for it PLUS the IBIS.
@Steve_Jaz
@Steve_Jaz 7 лет назад
3 paragraphs and not 1 thing you said is correct. The ibis is better on the a6500, there is no overheating on the a6500, the sensor and low light is leaps and bounds better on the sony, the 6k oversampled video is way better on the sony, stills are no doubt better on the sony, dynamic range slays any panasonic even the upcoming gh5.... how about you do research before spewing nonsense. The cheap plastic panasonic camera youre defending is nowhere near as good in comparison but you panasonic micro 4/3 lovers dont understand what makes that tiny baby trash sensor so bad.

What an obnoxious fan boy... Who the hell was talking here about the a6500??? The comparison was with a6300, with a6500 the difference is huge in price, you can buy two beautiful lenses for that money(pana leica 25mm f1.4, best lens for the money in my opinion). How the hell are you supposed to know how the dr on the gh5 will be??? You will never own one anyway. And who gives a crap about your dr, when gh5 will have 10 bit 4:2:2 and 4k at 60frames per second, which will blow away any sensor related feature that you guys with Sony are so showing off with. Sony A6500 will not even be in the same league with gh5, already gh5, a camera that can only be pre ordered and not on the market yet, is hurting the Sony sales badly

Yeah but they are pretty similar. I'd buy the GX85 based on how well it still performs rather then spend much more money for a small difference.

the a6300 has more video profiles, better dynamic range and high ISO performance so overall I would say the Sony, also considering it has a mic input unlike the GX85. The Panasonic is a good second or third camera or good for vlogging if you don't need advanced settings and you have the advantage of in-body stabilisation.

So having 4x more DR and 4 stops more high ISO in video is identical? Note that Panasonic forces NR at mid/high ISO, which results in smearing on anything that moves. It's not revealed in this video, though. I've got both cameras, and the A6300 looks more like a RED compared to the GX85's output.

Hi, I was about to buy the GX80 then I saw the coments and videos regarding the focus speed / problem with moving objects. I love all of the features and have reserched it to death... then.... I saw your video and others showing that the focus seems to only work if the camera and subject ae not moving!!!!!! Please can you explane if you found this problem and if so is there a solution.... other than an a6300 that has other issues for me... price...lense choice...and reported over heating.

Image quality is pretty much "you get what you pay for". Same with build quality (plastic vs magnesium weather sealed). IBIS is the big draw, but you can always get stabilized lenses.

Great video! I would like to join Brian's request and ask if you could compare between the GX-85 and A6300, Which one do you prefer for stills?
@MathieuGasquetMirrorLessons
@MathieuGasquetMirrorLessons 8 лет назад
I think I would go for the GX85.
@ofer3877
@ofer3877 8 лет назад
Although, when looking at the croped photo, the Sony a6300 looks much sharper and the colour looks better. In general I think that the shadows do look brighter with the Sony. Hard decision.....
@MathieuGasquetMirrorLessons
@MathieuGasquetMirrorLessons 8 лет назад
Overall the a6300 has more DR for video. Even with the standard Creative styles for still (no picture profile or s-log) there is more details in the shadows.
@BlueBomberTurbo
@BlueBomberTurbo 6 лет назад
The A6300 has at least 1 stop more DR and 2 stops high ISO quality. The GX85 is a bit more comparable to the A6000, with both using 12-bit RAW (green shadows), near similar DR, but the A6000 is still 1 stop ahead of the GX85 at high ISO. I"ve had all 3, and the A6300 is head and shoulders above the rest, especially when you consider lenses.

Great review... I wasn't expecting this much of a difference between dynamic range... I hoped gx85 would be around 13 stops but it seems its below that, where as a6300 has 14 stops AND an S-log.... Also I was surprised to see that GX85's rolling shutter seems to be even worse than sony's rolling "shitter"... I'm breaking my head over this subject, I want to get best camera for 4k videos in 800-1200$ price range, can you answer my questions? 1) Was the rolling shutter test done in 4K or full HD? 2) Does GX85 crop even more while recording 4K? 3)Is GX85 weather-sealed at any level?
@MathieuGasquetMirrorLessons
@MathieuGasquetMirrorLessons 8 лет назад
1) 4K (all the footage you see in the video is shot in 4K) 2) No, the crop example you see in the video is for 4K. 3) No weather sealed at all.

The A6300 has a jello effect that's really bad in 24fps video mode so be careful. I have recorded 4K with both cameras and they are almost identical in a lot of ways. Also if you have longer record times the Sony still overheats and when that happens on a gig the record times get shorter and shorter.

id like a midrange camera for video and photos with good quality/cost. I am between a6000 a5100 (second hand) and pana gx80. prices 600€ 430€(second hand) and 600€. For hobby, landscape nature ocean and stared night shooting. do you think the extra money is worth it? Gx80 is 4k and has inbody stabilisation but only 16 mpx and worst autofocus in video. A6000 is only 1080p but it can shoot 1080p at 50 fps with 50 mbps bit rate.it also has a 24 mpx apsc sebsor wich is larger than the 4/3 16 mpx sensor. i really do not know which one to buy. I was sold with the 4k and in body stabilization for videos .however i saw a couple of videos that autofocus were so bad that video lost sharpness. Maybe the 1080p of the a 6000 will look good enough for me and it is better to have a more avcurate autofocus. As it is for a non prfessional use and I will use the camera handheld mostly will a ois lends on the sony reduce shaky video as well as the inbody stabilisation of panasonic or at least close to. I will use ot 30%for videos and 70%for photos. I will shoot nature, waves ,surfing and also family use ,and street photography.

+Jan Garcia the a6000 has faster AF and slightly better low light performance. The GX85 has more advanced features and more choice when it comes to lenses, including affordable primes such as the Pana 25mm 1.7 or Oly 45mm 1.8. If fast AF for video is an absolute necessity, go with the Sony. Otherwise go with the one that you can find at the lowest price.
