A few people are stating ISO increments are actually available on this camera and certain speedboosters actually DO FIT! My bad about that! What camera should I review next?
About the IBIS warping: You most likely have physical IBIS on as well as digital IS. The combination creates that warping you see there, and by turning the digital IS off and leaving the physical IBIS on, you can get rid of the warping you see.
As a a6000 owner, I was tempted to go with the a6500 when it came time to buy equipment for work. After a couple months of research, I chose the g85. The 4 main reasons... 1: I'm still not convinced Sony has solved the overheating issues. 2: Fully articulating screen with GOOD touch controls was a must. I never liked Sony's menu system. That flip screen is almost worthless (Only my opinion, but after using it for about 2 years, I grew to hate it). And Sony's implementation of the touchscreen on the 6500 is...from everything I've seen...well, not great to put it kindly. 3: Ability to record past 30min was a must. I think there's a hack for this for the Sony. Please let me know if I'm wrong on this. All I know for sure is that with the g85, I just stick in a card and it records until the card is full. I don't always need this, but I did at my last shoot. Had to place one camera in a fixed spot I could not get to until event was done. 4: g85 is $500 less. The Sony has some nice features, and image quality is not one of it's problems. It's most of the stuff around that sensor that didn't work for me. My use case is currently about 70% stills, 30% video. But that is rapidly changing. The last event I did I spent 80% of my time shooting video. The quality from the micro 4/3 sensor is more than enough for our intended audience, 80-90% of whom will be viewing on a cell phone, or laptop. I'll eventually post some samples to my channel, but I've been way too busy at work actually using it :)
Great review! I've been testing it as well and I ordered the Metabones speedbooster that's made for the gh4 and it fits so I think it must be the older speedbooster that's the problem. Also there's a trick for the ISO increments that you had to do on the gh4 also. Turn the camera to "p" mode and then there is a setting called "ISO increments" in the menu. Change it to 1/3. Then go back to video mode and you can now use the ISO like 250,320,etc..again, great review, love your videos and loved that you showed footage from several different scenarios, keep it up!
Hi, I appreciate your in depth review of the G85. You were very up front, honest and technically knowledgable. Your details and comparisons are very interesting to me and they helped me in my decision making. Terrific review! :)
Yeah, go into the menu and you can set the ISO ev increments. I just found this out on my G7's. Turn the mode to camers (M, A, S, etc.). There is a "REC" menu that you cannot access in Video Mode. Go to ISO increments and change to 1/3EV instead of 1EV.
Great review--lots of info delivered with clarity. Excellent. I recently picked up the G85 and really love it---ease of use and image are super--and the main reason for picking it up (stabilization) did not disappoint. Not sure what your issue was with the Metabones. I picked up the T Speed Booster XL 0.64x and it fit fine. No clearance issues at all. Love the image and manual focus control so much on the 18-35 I bought a 50-100 1.8 (which drops to 1.2, not 1.1--weird) and the 24-70 2.8 (which drops to 1.9)--and they are super. (And this is the older 24-70--not the art series). I plan to use those on the GH5--when it is delivered. (I hear there might be yet another delay). Just as an aside, I really like to shoot manual and use the focus assist--which works spot on with the 18-35 and the 24-70, but it is iffy--on again/off again with the 50-100. Again, weird. What's that about? I understand your preference for the A6300/6500---but neither of those cameras seem as well built as the G85, and I've never been able to get happy with Sony color. I prefer Canon, but at least the Panasonic isn't...well, ugly. Believe me, I've really tried with Sony. It's just not happening.
@YCImaging you can set the G85's ISO intervals to 1/3's. Set the mode dial to M, go to top Rec menu (page 6), set ISO increments to 1/3 EV. Back to video mode and you're set. My speedbooster fits fine btw. :) edit: I see others have already told you about the ISO increments!
Ben Jordan this will be my first camera aside from my s7 phone cam. I've watched alot of videos and I've noticed some playbacks aren't as smooth in some cameras. just wondering how to get that ultra smooth playback
On the G7, you can slow down the ISO if you switch over to photo mode and in the photo menu set the ISO increments to 1/3EV. I think you can do it on the G85 as well. Took me a while to find that out, but its there. I definitely miss the VFR on the GH4. Good review brother. Salute.
Great video! Glad to find you on RU-vid. But whoa...that whole video saying great things and then recommending the 6300/6500 at the end with no explanation. What's your major reasoning?
There should be a setting in the menu to change to incremental ISO. I had the G7 and I switched it and got better results than the big jumps. I forgot where it was specifically in the menu system.
Hey ! So I'm french but your review is very great ! Thank you for this video, I actually search a good camera/photo for my travel videos, I think this Lumix g85 was great and your video will be very helpful for this choice !
This is so confusing. These reviews always talk about "whatever your preference is." But seriously, when is there going to be a camera that doesn't leave us dizzy. It's like they do this shit on purpose. Not your fault YCI. If you pay $1,000 you get 4K, but only 2/3 frame sensor? Is it gonna kill manufacturers to make it full frame, when Sony has a full frame at $800. Really? Is that shit set up to screw with us? He's what we want. 4K, full frame, serious image stabilization, variable frame rates (that shit is standard, why take it out??), a clear swivel touch screen, normal fucking ISO intervals, very low light capability. Make it happen.
Nice review, but may be a bit unfair comparing video options with the GH4, the G class is more of an all-rounder and is a sucessor to the G7 as the GH5 is to the GH4. Nice footage though and good to see what the video is capable of.
great content dude! do you mind sharing with me what bitrate you render your videos to? i used to have a hard time with youtube destroying my videos, i experimented with so many different renderings! your video doesn't even look compressed here! thanks
Think that kinda helped me decide... I'm in the market looking for a 2nd body for video shooting. I already have a GH4... I don't really have the cash to keep the GH4 and get a GH5... what a quandary?! Because my Canon T7 isn't really good for video. I mostly use it for still image
Nice review. Looks like the issue with stabilization might have been due to Electronic Stabilization on with Dual IS. Also, you should be able to set ISO to 1/3 stops vs full stops. Looking forward to seeing your GH5 videos. I'm directing my first music video with the GH5 at SXSW on Tuesday.
On gh4 you can change the iso intervals under "photo" settings. I don't know if that is the case on this camera? Update: see page 199 in the advanced manual
Great review can't wait until the GH5. I have the GH4 and the Sony a6500, for me the a6500 is clearly the winner now and it is much more convenient to carry than my Sony FS5
Hey YCimaging, just wanted your advice. I just bought a G85 a few days ago and at first was blown away by the features but I soon realised there is some major issues with the camera. The IBIS is not as good as the GH5, the G85 is prone to making a fan noise which Panasonic tried to rectify through a firmware update but this has not fixed the problem. I used an external rode video mic which I recorded the sound separately rather than plugging it into the G85. But the humming sound or fan issue is still very prominent which really saddened me, sound is soooo important to me and the G85 really gives me huge problems with that. I'm thinking of investing on a GH4 and getting an IS lens to help with handheld filming as i rather have a camera that doesn't let me down with silly humming sounds. The only solution is getting a rig or an extended hot shoe mount to place on top of the G85 as i noticed when i took off the rode video mic from the hot shoe mount of the G85, the sound of the humming/fan sound is pretty much gone and not picked up. So If i can get something to place the external mic away from the body, that would be enough for me to keep the camera. Other than the humming sounds, the G85 is a great camera stacked with top features. Although the GH4 slow mo is like a big plus for me as i like to record more slow mo which you can't on the G85 except 60fps. Let me know your thoughts :)
Can you show a tutorial on how to livestream and use obs with the camera? Really appreciate all of your videos, creating my first music video and teaching ballet/Pilates on multiple platforms.
When having bought a G85, in Dec 19, with a Leica 12-60mm and a Deity D3 pro mic, I relied on such good reviews like this one. It would have been quite an embarrassment for me, to have chosen the wrong camera, because it was a gift for a an australian music-artist ;-) Fortunately Mikayla Jade loves her present and when watching her videos, knowing it is the perfect camera for vlogging and the right lense for her usual low-light videos ! If you are a video-artist or vlogger yourself, searching for video-examples, perhaps take a look at her YT-channel... Still some known issues with focussing, but try to teach an independent artist to switch to manual and you know what I mean ;-)
+YCImaging ...That is a Metabones issue, the current models fit okay. It sounds like the new G9 is the camera for you, and it's only weeks away now. I thought it was such a great price, that I bought a pair of them! Good video, but you talk a bit too fast!
I bought the GH4 and the G85 at the same time and tested them out. For me personally, the G85 won. It's smaller, lighter and especially has IBIS which is incredible cool
Great review. Thanks! I currently have been using the Lumix DMC-LX10. I don't have much experience at all. I haved noticed some things about it that I don't care too much for. I will primarily be shooting outdoor scenery, wildlife etc... I do use autofocus also. I have used my current camera for backpacking long distances where weight and pack size are both something to be considered. However, I think I could make something that size work. But that's even pushing a bit. Can you recommend something? Or would you just suggest that Lumix? Thank you for posting your review!!!
Awsome footage! i´m kind of stocked between these cameras, how did you got this slowmotion takes from G85? and.. what you think about Olympus OMD EM 5 mark II? commparing with G85. Thanks!!
Been bouncing back and forth between these exact 2 cameras. The low bitrate 1080p is a bit of a concern for me, I'm just thinking that when I wanna use 1080p 60 for slow mo, the 200mbps or the GH4 would be better. What do you think?
Im trying to decide what camera to buy. I do photography Weddings, Parties, Events family Portraits,I am also a Independent Filmmaker Documentaries and music videos what camera would you suggest?
dude , can u do a comparision with cannon eos 80d ?? i am stuck with cannon 80d vs lumix g85 ?? my main purpose is youtube and getting into indi filming ??? how good is g85 focus for making short films?
Are you also using the G85 and Lumix 12-35 f/2.8 lens to film yourself in the very beginning and throughout this video when you're talking about the test footage?
So you're saying that it would be better to get the A6500 over the G85? because of the low light? but what if my plan is to stay mft. and move up to the GH5 at some point?
Hey YCImaging. Could you maybe do a review of the Sony a6300? I just bought a GH4, but I'm thinking of returning it and get me a Sony a6300. The overheating issue everyone talks about scared me off buying the a6300 at first, but it doesn't seem to be a problem to you. Or is there a workaround? What's your experience recording video with the Sony a6300 aside from 4k, 120 fps, S log profile etc?
Good Day! I have a question. Why when I import the files to Premiere it says that the frame rate is 23.976 jst like it was with dslrs, I thought it shot 24. Anyone else has this Problem?
