Great video! Thanks for the info 😊 I am looking at getting a G85 for my first camera (I am completely new to the dslr industry), I was wondering if you would be interested to go out into the field and give a tutorial for beginners of how to use the different settings e.g. when do you use the ISO function and what settings it should be on or how does the shutter speed work, etc. If this is something that would interest you please could you make a tutorial on this! 😊

This was FILLED with a lot of great information Justin. I always love these tech videos you do because they are so "Human". You do more than just feed the spec heads and mix a lot of real world scenarios into your content. Also, did you leave two layers of audio in this video? Sounded like there was a little echo, almost like there was a duplicate audio layer left in. May just be me though, I'm insanely tired lol

Great informative video. We have the same frustrations you do. Franny and I are often doing an intro or outro together Vlogging style and the eye focus will just pick up one of us (a mentioned by another comment on this video). We have been playing with manual setting or shutter priority because of it. On this video...I personally had a little bit of a hard time keeping up with you. Kind of think of us as kindergarteners or beginners. I literally need you to show, hit this button, then hit this. Most of the time I could figure it out, but a few times I was like what menu is he in now? How did he get there? Just advise. Take it or leave it. My most frustrating issue now (besides the focus on two people) is the image stabilization. You clued me into something, but I noticed it is grayed out of my camera and I can't select the menu to change the operation mode under the stabilization. Maybe it's my lens. I did upgrade from the kit lens to LUMIX GX Vario 12-35. So, I am going to have to research why that stabilization option is grayed out. What I am saying is THANK You, because I get that rocky side to side thing happening and it's driving me nuts. Now I just have to fix it. Heidi

Great vid! So here is a beginner of all beginner questions, can you (or anyone reading this) guide me in finding the menu setting that gets me to the AF MODE Screen that is at 2:04, where you can choose your settings for AF?

Great video. I bought the G7 last week to try it out. I instantly fell in love. The 20% of bad autofocus didn't bother me as much as I thought it would. I decided to order the G85 however, for the wider lens, ibis, and weather sealing. I think it's a great overall camera for what it offers. I have a 60D and really fought with buying the 80D with Dual-pixel AF. I guess the 4k sold me. One question I came up with is, as I was trying out the manual focus(the M on the top dial) on my G7, I noticed it still autofocused the camera in video. The autofocus seemed even better than when the camera was in other modes. Is that suppose to happen? Why is the camera still autofocusing in manual mode? Does it have to do with continuous autofocus being turned on? Or am I not using the right settings?

Killing it. Thanks. Note for 2024 scavengers: G90/G91/G95 has auto ISO in M video. Plus headphone jack, USB charge/power, OLED LCD and, for EU market vs. G80/G85, no 30 minute record limit. €400 MPB right now. 12-35mm f2.8 about the same. What's a better hybrid cam for anyone but AF-neurotic YT vloggers?

Justin is the idea of the spot focusing being linked to the spot metering something new with Panasonic?! Do you have to apply a special setting or if you simply choose spot metering and then choose spot focusing the metering will get linked to wherever you do your spot focus? This is a very handy feature I was not aware of! I've pre-ordered the GH5 and I assume this feature will be part of it. I hope!
@JustinReves
@JustinReves 7 лет назад
This is just the way it worked on my G7 and then on the G85. It's kinda where I started doing videos so I thought it was just normal. Works the same way on my GH4 so I'm sure it will be the same with the GH5!

Thanks for the upload. Just two questions: on A mode will the shutter speed change automatically. If yes, will that not make the 24 fps incompatible if under bright light it automatically changes shutter speed to 100 or above. Second question: when using a Nikon DSLR camera prime lens like 35 mm 1.8 on g85 with an adapter the focal length effect is supposed to double to 70. But will the aperture of 1.8 double to 3.6 or reduce to .9 as the sensor is small.

Hi Justin. Seen almost all of your vids. Very helpful. Thanks for that. Exposure modes. In this one you explain you go for Aperture priority. But here is the thing. Your shutterspeed should be twice the framerate right? So I would make sure with 24fps I set the camera to 50 for shutter-speed and let the camera adapt the aperture since it cannot change the ISO. Why do you insist on A then? Is depth of field that much important to you for vlogging? KR Ed
@JustinReves
@JustinReves 7 лет назад
Hey Ed, your shutter speed *should* be twice your frame rate but unless you're filming propellers or water, 99.8% of the world can't see the difference between 1/50 and 1/4000 on normal shots. And I think aperture is way more important for getting a more cinematic look. I.e. I'd rather be shooting at the lowest aperture and the highest shutter speed than having the right shutter speed and having to sacrifice being at f/16 or f/21 if it's really bright out. Try it out, though and see what you like best!
@SpartanEx7
@SpartanEx7 7 лет назад
Hi Justin, you actually can use Auto ISO in manual mode, you just need to set it to M mode (M without camera pictogram) on main dial, then you can set exact shutter speed and aperture and let camera set ISO. Auto ISO just does not work in manual movie mode, so it is not possible to use Cinemalike D and auto ISO, which is really unfortunate.

I don't get it. When I set M on main dial and hit the record button, it simply starts normal recording with automatic settings. And when i press the shutter button, of course it takes a photo. I don't see how this is going to work for video.

I think the Canon dual pixel AF is the best AF system. It just works so amazingly! Now if only they could get their 4K game in order....but that's another story! lol
@JustinReves
@JustinReves 7 лет назад
Yeah, Canon could be way better but they're still trying to always push people up the line to their professional video cameras so they're leaving features out of the lower models. 4K shouldn't be a deal breaker, but it does offer a lot for editing and just looking good!

Thanks! I have a tech channel as you can see from my name. Question: How about when you are doing product shots it tends to have movements focusing issue I'm having. For example unboxings or show casing a product. lens that I have are the Kit lens and 25mm 1.7 both from branded Panasonic. Camera: Panasonic Lumix G7.
@JustinReves
@JustinReves 7 лет назад
I think single-point is your best option if stuff is moving close and far. Don't just shoot at 1.7 because you can - I'd dial back to 2.5 and try that. It's not going to be perfect, but it should work. The more contrast the better for it being able to track the focus. You could try tracking focus for specific product shots, too.

Justin - Thanks for posting your settings - notice you set to AVCHD to get 1080 @ 24fps - why not just use MP4 1080 @ 25fps ? I'm thinking of using the combo 25fps and 60fps for slow motion in FCPX -
@JustinReves
@JustinReves 6 лет назад
25/50fps is PAL which is typically the standard in the UK and some other parts of the world but here it’s 30/60fps and 24fps is what movies have typically used. No 25fps option in North America.

The autofocus on this camera is crap compared with our old Sony a5100 (and still using it). But! if you know how to control it, and you Justin do it very well, wouldn't be so bad. Maybe for someone who move the camera fast while vlogging focusing their faces and then a friend's face who is nearer and then showing something in the background this camera doesn't work properly. If all the scenes are controlled scenes by you, where you know you will not move a lot, this camera is good! We love the menu options and thanks to you we just learnt more about it (we learnt about it lenses a few weeks ago thanks to your channel). Do you think the files in the SD card are hard to find? Hahaha
@JustinReves
@JustinReves 7 лет назад
+Nekojitablog When you're shooting in AVCHD, the files are RIDICULOUS to find - haha! But I don't even think about it anymore - kinda habit now. Another thing for focus is using the shutter half-press to force the focus. That helps at times. The only thing that keeps this from being the ultimate camera is the focus. But it's got a lot of other stuff going for it.
@Nekojitablog
@Nekojitablog 7 лет назад
Justin Reves Totally agree! If the beep sound is muted you can press the shutter button to focus like a still. No disturbing sound and really fast way to focus. This method is great for b-roll or selfie vlogging if you grab the camera properly hahaha. We have a 15mm f/1.7 and thinking about buying the wide angle adapter (from 15mm to 12mm maybe) Also we have your lovely 7-14mm. Killer combo for vlogging! Thank you very much!

+Nekojitablog I LOVE that 15mm and the wide angle adapter is handy. Being at 7mm is so fun but it's f/4 which you know isn't nearly as fun as 1.7 :). Man, you guys are so close to a million! Great job!

Nekojitablog I am jumping from a Sony a6300 and like your a5100, Sony's focusing is amazing but I wanted the option to use a mic, the image stabilization on the Sony being in the lense was pretty much non existant and the a6300 also has issues with overheating. Nothing worse then having to sit there and wait till your camera cools down. The G85 sounds so close to being the perfect. Going to probably use manual focus any time I can.
@Nekojitablog

Fun With The Bugs We have the same problems with the a5100, the overheating when recording 4K... Oh wait... When recording 1080p hahaha. Today's vlog was a pain in the ass because of the overheating. Tokyo is cold now but the camera overheats in 4 or 5 minutes. Another advantage is the battery life. Sony's is a joke hahaha.

how is the touch to focus does it go in and out of focus like the auto focus ? or does it stay in focus on the subject ?
@JustinReves
@JustinReves 7 лет назад
Because Panasonic uses a "contrast" based autofocus, the touch to focus will change to whatever you touch (depends on your autofocus settings), but it's going to "hunt" (go in and slightly out of focus) as it acquires the focus.

Fun With The Bugs Hey - so how is the AF in the end in your case? Are you satisfied?
@FunWithTheBugs
@FunWithTheBugs 7 лет назад
ExclusiveMontages I wouldn't say satisfied. Most reviews talk about the speed of the focus. I have been fine with that. What urkes me about the AF on the G85 is you can have the camera in focus on something and then it will for no reason pulse. So it will unfocus for a second then refocus. That is what bothers me the most. If not for that, I would have no complaints but that one issue is a big deal to me.
@ExclusiveMontages

Could you elaborate a little more on the differences between AVCHD 60P, AVCHD 60i, and MP4 60P? Why MP4 60P over AVCHD 60P and AVCHD 60i? Also, I don't know why but for my G85, the "Exposure Mode" is faded so I can't select it... ???
@JustinReves
@JustinReves 6 лет назад
What mode is the dial on the top of the camera on (the one on the right where the A, P, M, movie icon, etc... are on)? I shoot in AVCHD because I wanted to shoot 1080 at 24 frames per second. If it were 60P, I'd shoot MP4. There's no 24p option on MP4 - only 30p or 60p.
@epicbarista
@epicbarista 6 лет назад
Why do you want to shoot 24 frames? Isn't 60 frames better? Or do you think it's overkill? I believe you recommended it for slow motion. The mode on the top is on IA at the moment. I still haven't figured out which mode would be best for me. The flip screen is so small, you can't even tell if you're out of focus or not until you upload it onto your computer... otherwise you'd have you to really squint at the small flip screen while you're vlogging, which is frowned down on...

Hey Justin. Are you still using the G85 for vlogging or have you moved on to something else? Thanks!
@JustinReves
@JustinReves 5 лет назад
I went on a bit of a journey, selling the G85 for a Sony a6500 then selling that once I got the Canon M50 and wasn't using the Sony and then I upgraded to the EOS R because I could and I missed full-frame for photos, but I still use a G7 and a GH3 for our live show. But for vlogging, I struggle to recommend anything but the M50 for how well it works and how cheap it is. The new a6400 is cool, but the ultrawide 10-18mm f/4 is a bit pricey. Panasonic's autofocus just isn't reliable enough for me to really recommend it, even though you can make it work.
@DaveKingMusic
@DaveKingMusic 5 лет назад
@@JustinReves Yes! That's been quite a journey. I get frustrated with my G85 with focusing for video, but I love everything else about it. That M50 looks like a good and affordable solution for vlogging. I may try one out. I'm not interested in going FF due to the size and weight. I really enjoy the portability of the M43 camera I have now, but it looks like that M50 is even smaller and lighter, yet has a larger sensor. Decisions... Decisions... I've been catching up on your channel today. Great stuff! Thanks.
@officialtiimo
@officialtiimo 7 лет назад
I appreciate this video, but your advice on the color profiles is kinda silly. At 4k, the g85 is already plenty sharp, and raising the sharpness +2 actually begins to take away some of the detail in the shot and just looks kind of... off. Basically just too sharp. +1 *might* be ok, but even then you'll get a better quality by doing it (very quickly) in post. Raising contast and saturation instead of using a flat color profile also probably hurts your end image, because you can get better results by just applying a quick LUT to the end result which takes very little effort at all. Like basically just selecting it in post. The AF settings advice is much more helpful because I think a lot of people, myself included want to know how to get faster, more accurate AF results of of the g85. So thank you for this video, I'll try out your AF settings and see how they do :)

For vlogging, it’s not that big of a deal. The motion will look a bit funny, but it depends whether you want shallow depth of field (blurry background) or smooth motion. You can’t have both outside unless you’re using a variable ND or something else to knock down all the light.

+PierreTL If you look at my Gary Vee vlog, there's a shot early where I'm talking and walking in the street and the background is in focus and I'm out. Focus is set on me but it can't tell or adjust because of the movement. It's great 80% of the time but the other 20% is annoying. Go look at Max Yuryev's video comparing the G85, OM1 I, and a6500. I want it to be like the a6500. Again, I've made it work just fine for a LOT of videos but I just want to be sure if people don't need 4K, the more compact size, or plan on doing any streaming with the camera, I think Canon is a better option for being more fool-proof. I want those other things.

@PierreTL 7 лет назад
I see! Thanks for sharing. A quick tip: have you tried to tap on your face when walking to lock the focus on your face? I've felt it helped with a lot of movement. Also for me the AF is way better in 1080 than 4k (check the video I just published I talk about it). Yes I like the Sony but can't get over the flip screen... Wondering what the GH5 will be like!! I did 170+ VLOGs with the G7 in sun, sand, snow, and rain - it never had a hiccup. Your mileage may vary. The G85 is more robust, but I never had an issue with the G7. The big reason to upgrade to the G85 is for the in-body image stabilization - it makes hand-held shots a lot smoother and can help you take photos in lower light. If that's not a huge concern, I wouldn't worry about upgrading.

This was a long time ago as I was learning about lighting, but the troubles with focusing had nothing to do with these kinds of setups - it would focus pretty good in well-lit, high-contrast situations like this. Having a strong backlight isn't an issue if you face is well-lit and you have good, high-contrast features like a beard. It's when you don't have ideal lighting and you're out and about vlogging in the real-world that it would struggle.
