I agree with the note you added in at 6:52... Same body, 28mm or 35mm and no lens extension would be absolutely amazing, doubly so with your idea of an f1.4 lens! Would definitely be a nice treat, that's for sure.... Doubly so as a compact carry around, but especially for things like street photography. Bonus points if it were weather sealed too... I really do wish there were more high end compact cameras with fixed, fast lenses on the market... Sure, Fuji has made a few over the years, but some like the XF10 are... I dunno, don't seem quite as premium, doubly so since it doesn't have a shutter speed dial (only the X100 series does, at least for bodies Fuji is still making)

yes, understandably compact camera is now a small and shrinking market but i think Panasonic can create such a camera with relatively low (development) cost by swapping LX100 II's lens with a fast prime. If they manage to make the 24--75 f/1.7-2.8 so small and still such good image quality, just imagine what they might possibly do if we just want a prime lens. The result would be an amazing fun street camera that can rival Fujifilm X100 series as Panasonic has better AF, great video and a few things (while Fujifilm has that really cool hybrid VF and a few other tricks)

Whatever one thinks about this cameras features (or lack there of) or its value, this is the best review of the LX100 m2 I have seen. Thanks!

Thanks Richard for the nice review as usual. I bought the Mark II and I really enjoying to use it and the improved picture quality. From my perspective it is one of the best designed cameras available if you like to use manual settings. It’s really worth to do the upgrade from version I. As you said: “If you love the LX100 you will also love the LX100II” Thanks, Harald

Hi Harald, definitely if you like manual controls this is one of the best you can buy right now. Enjoy your lx100II

I was hoping for a built in ND filter, dust proof case since many had issues with dust in the sensor, and a built in flash. The additional resolution is a good thing, 17 MP, but since the lens is identical, I'm hoping the updated processor will improve the image quality.
@TheRealRichardWong
@TheRealRichardWong 6 лет назад
built-in ND filter would be good, especially for video i guess. But I think most people would buy it as a photo camera so may not be as useful as it already has electronic shutter as well (but with quite a bit of rolling shutter, something I forgot to mention in my review)

Hello Robin. It seems no one talks about how much of an improvement in detail there is from the Panasonic LX100 to this new LX100 mark II. Could you please answer that question ?
@chinwengkeong
@chinwengkeong 6 лет назад
Great review, thanks! I have the first generation LX100 and my main complaint about it is noise at anything over ISO 800 when shooting RAW. Do you have an opinion on RAW noise from this new sensor versus the old?

So what do you think about the new LX100 II? And you may notice I talk a lot faster in this video compare to my previous videos to shorten the length of the video. What do you think? Do you prefer I speak faster like this or the slower speed in my older videos? Please let me know
@Eivissaa
@Eivissaa 6 лет назад
You speak just well. After 4 years the upgrades are not satisfying to me. Unless the OIS on 4K video has improved. Otherwise I stick to my LX100 and GX85 (great OIS).

This camera is such a huge fail by Panasonic, not even sure why they released it, in 2018 to not include a flip/articulating screen is complete face palm, no mic jack lol.

Thank you for the very nice review Richard. If you already had a Sony A6000 would you buy this new Lumix?
@TheRealRichardWong
@TheRealRichardWong 6 лет назад
Hi N_ R, Do you have all the lenses you need for your A6000? If you already have, then maybe not because we don't have unlimited $$$ :) The main advantage of the LX100 II i s that it has a very nice and fast 3x zoom lens and it's still (just) pocketable, while a A6000 + a fast zoom you definitely can't fit in your pocket.

I do have the LX100 - and it was good at the time - but this new version just lacks things - no tilt LCD :( bad also I am not digging the ratio thing - why not just have it 4:3 and use the full sensor - also wish EVF had larger magnification - it is a street shooter - magnification to small - for its size I wish lens was 24-100 for me now it makes more sense to use my Fuji XT2 or the LX10 or G7X lens startup slow - I see now Panasonic is working on FF camera - in some ways they have failed to impress - the price on the G9 so close to the Sony A7m3 did not help - the G9 should be at $1399 - so although a great camera it just did not get much attention - also the naming confusion with the GX7 GX8 GX9 GX85 just did not help the GX9 - which I think is a bit small - and no replacement for the GX8 :( Four years and not much changed - sadly - I think it will not sell well :( nice video as always - thanks - Hope Panasonic replaces DFD with Dual Pixel AF - would like to see this new DFD in video tracking - seems most video folks are still not impressed with their DFD - and the GH5 is loosing out on Sony and Canon sales -

Thanks again. I would say it's quite unlikely panasonic would shift to use hybrid autofocus system in the near future. They appear to be really committed to it and believe they can get it right in the near future. So I guess the upcoming rumoured FF camera would be the real test for them as full frame means it's a lot more challenging to get the AF right

Richard, thank you again for a great review. I have a question, what is the quality of the IBIS relative to the GX85? Also is ETC available for 1080p/60? Lastly if you could only have one camera/lens for BOTH photography and videography would you prefer the LX100ii or the GX9 with 12-60 or PL15?
@TheRealRichardWong
@TheRealRichardWong 6 лет назад
Hi Jay, the GX85 has better image stabilisation especially when you are in Dual I.S. mode. Sorry not sure about ETC and i don't have the camera with me anymore to check. Re one camera/lens for photo/video, I'm a prime shooter usually so I would go for GX9 + PL15 myself. PL 12-60 would already be just as expensive as the LX100II, so if i want a one lens setup, it makes more sense to buy the LX100II as it's faster, cheaper and smaller
@soholingo

The OIS on the LX00 was not so good imo (especially compared to the GX80 ) when shooting 4K video. I suppose this has not improved on the new LX100. What are your thoughts about this? Doess the bigger sensor any influence on the quality of 4K video? Thanks for the review.
@TheRealRichardWong
@TheRealRichardWong 6 лет назад
Hi Eiviassa, the OIS is OK, but definitely not as great as the Dual I.S. on the GH5 for example. Check out my LX100 II video review and there are some sample videos in it and see what you think? ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-LwZgoMc7NZM.html

Costs $998 for a compact camera wow.... That's expensive.
@TheRealRichardWong
@TheRealRichardWong 6 лет назад
It's definitely not cheap. But the main competitor is the Sony RX100 which is around same price, but has much smaller sensor. (each has it's own pros and cons when compare to each other)
@yttean98
@yttean98 6 лет назад
LX100II is clearly superior to the older model but costs over $400 more, is it really worth $400? Overall the prices of modern cameras are rising rapidly, it applies to all models across all brands. Earlier models like LX3, LX5, LX7, etc are so much cheaper.
@yttean98
@yttean98 6 лет назад
Maybe wait for 1-2 years buy in the 2nd market when the prices will fall, can be bought at a really good price, furthermore most modern 2nd hand cameras are not used extensively.

The lens separately would be very expensive. Fast zooms are expensive.
@allgoo1964

Florida Hiker says: "The lens separately would be very expensive. Fast zooms are expensive." == I agree. It's a super lens. 24-75mm equivalent F1.7-2.8 zoom If the $1000 price tag concerns you, Here's the older model LX100 which has been replace by markII. www.amazon.com/dp/B00NHZUFPU/?coliid=I14R6RCCXW54T1&colid=3H7KDUES3BB36&ref_=lv_ov_lig_dp_it&th=1 It's priced at $600, it has the same lens and fewer pixel counts. To me, at least, it looks like a great bargain.

You are very right. This is a Leica inspired photographer's camera, not really for video guys. For me, I bought the old LX100 because I like the Leica designed old school tpye control. I am actually happy they kept it that way. Good that they just improve the sensor, processor and add a touch screen beside some small changes.
