Panasonic has changed the 1500 model so it no longer features the flagship panel minus the Dolby Atmos audio system. The MZ1500 for 2023 offers last year's panel without MLA and a new soundbar that many enthusiasts will not want. So what gives?

The Panasonic MZ1500 is an excellent mid-tier OLED TV designed for movie fans and dark room viewing conditions. Sadly it doesn’t have the top-end MLA (Micro Lens Array) panel found in the flagship MZ2000, but it does feature the previous flagship Master OLED Pro panel with a proprietary heat sink found in last year’s models.
SDR and HDR content is accurate thanks to Filmmaker Mode out of the box, plus there is the added benefit for bright room viewing with a new light sensor and white balance adjustment that follows the creator's intent but adjusts the image to suit your environment.
Plus, there is support for HDR10, HDR10+, HDR10+Adaptive, Dolby Vision, Dolby Vision IQ and HLG (Hybrid Log-Gamma) HDR formats and gaming is well catered for with two HDMI 2.1 ports (40Gbps), an improved game bar and an accurate True Game picture mode. It’s an impressive package that sits well with competing sets at this level of the market and comes highly recommended.
The good
Excellent cinematic SDR & HDR image quality
Support for all HDR formats
True game picture mode, game bar and decent gaming features
Good sound quality
The not so good
Only two 40Gbps HDMI 2.1 ports with eARC using one
Some visible posterisation around bright objects
Just above black dithering and some black crush noticeable
We use Portrait Displays’ Calman colour calibration software (www.portrait.com) a Murideo Seven Generator and a Klein K-10A meter profiled to a JETI Spectraval 1511-HiRes spectroradiometer for measurement and calibration.

Have to say again Phil that your presentation style is excellent and somehow improves on each video. Also (and I hope this is taken the right way) you are looking really healthy/well and it's so good to see. I hope that means that life is treating you well. ☺

Not every TV buyer with cash is a "enthusiast" with a surround system.. Premium customers with cash highly appreciate the hassle free and clean experience with a soundbar..

Yes, they do and the MZ2000 is the perfect TV for that customer. The 1500 used to be the enthusiast TV that had the same flagship panel but dropped the sound system for those who didn't want it. This was choice for the consumer. This year they have put an inferior panel in the 1500 compared to the 2000 and added a soundbar underneath, so you no longer have the choice of the top panel and no sound.

@stefanof.j.982 how is the gradation and motion handling? Does it handle upscaling well?

Hi Phil, this is not really related to the video but if it came down to an LZ1500 vs an S90/94C, both 65", which one would you go for and why? Thanks in advance!

Who’s got the best picture quality @ that range, C3? A80L?
@isak6626

Phil, what do you think about Panasonic's upscaling and ability to deliver streamed content in a clean manner in comparison to the Sony A80L? A couple of years ago, the Panasonic's UB820 blu-ray player (and it's siblings) was considered to deliver the best upscaling and tone-mapping for playback of blu-rays on the very best TVs, and those players use the HCX-procesor. In you opinion, does that still hold true today? I.e., would if you have a Panasonic UHD Blu-ray player, would you still use it's upscaling and HDR optimizer with a 2023 OLED like the Sony A80L?

The MZ980 had a tad better write up in it's review by Av forums I recall. The best buy imo if you don't want the soundbar built in.

Overall reading all pro reviews that I can find. It seems that Panasonic OLED is the king at shadow details in dark scenes, and just above black, black crush. Or at the very least they are as good as anyone. Also their SDR is as good as anyone's. As is their motion. It looks like they messed up HDR out of the box a tad though regarding some skin tone issues a number of reviews have mentioned them. This year they would still be an ideal OLED for many people I think. Those who don't watch HDR much at all. And who don't mind the old design and look of the TVs.

Enthusiasts do not need embedded soundbars on the flagship tvs. An enthusiast usually owns a separate home theatre with distinct speakers and avr processor. I hope next year they will focus only on image quality and not on sound. An embedded soundbar is useless and adds extra costs.
@markbanner6473
@markbanner6473 9 месяцев назад
And let's be honest most people who can afford Panasonic higher end OLED prices will usually have a 5.1 or more system. If a company is going to add a soundbar it makes more logically sense to have one built into your least expensive OLED.

They need to add 2 hdmi's and do some makeup on the tvs and make them like a sony with a bit of Panasonic lol

I still really appreciate the Panasonic's colour accuracy especially after calibration. But the rest of the stuff that's out there doesn't seem to attract much interest, unless they're heavily discounting prices.

The 1500 panel was the same as the 2000 panel last year and that panel is what they have brought forward to this year's 1500. They aren't driving it as hard as last year though. 154 nits full field? Pathetic for the model that's second only to the flagship.

@@abelramos8652 If you are still interested in the LZ models from late 2022 to early 2023, then either will do, they use the same panel. If there is less than £150 price difference get the flagship LZ2000 for the slight brightness increase and better onboard sound package. If you already have a sound system, just get the LZ1500. If you have the money, go for the MZ2000 with MLA panel. And avoid the MZ1500, as per this video.

@@abelramos8652 If you're still interested in the late 2022 models (the LZ's), then if the price difference is minimal, always pick the flagship, the 2000. If the 1500 is available considerably cheaper and you have a good sound setup already, get the 1500 as it has the same panel as the 2000. If money is no issue obviously the late 2023 MZ2000 with the MLA panel is the one to go for. Whatever you do, don't bother with the MZ1500, as per this video.

According to a statement of Panasonic Technical Marketing Europe a few months ago, previous year's 1500 models did indeed feature the 2000's panel, but not its proprietary display driver. So in fact they did not deliver the same picture quality as the 2000.

This is becoming the normal nonsense of a major brand who insists on producing a product that none of its customers actually want. It does make you wonder how long Panasonic will be in business if they carry on pursuing this business model. I sincerely hope they wake up quickly and start listening to their customers needs.

What qualities do you think need some revamping?
@vlcheish
@vlcheish 9 месяцев назад
@@hastensavoir7782 Panasonic users want a MZ1500 with MLA. Issue now is a G3 which has MLA is only £184 more at 55" for example and the G3 does a lot of things extremely well. Panasonic will not be able to get people to upgrade from earlier models to this one for the most part because of this. Most Panasonic users will either wait for a MLA 1500 version in future or jump to a competitor. Few will get this and few will get the MZ2000 who are previous 1500 owners. This is the most quite I've seen forums about Panasonic in many years. All of the talk is LG, Samsung and Sony.
