Panasonic NV-V8000 VHS - Part 3 - Discovering what this machine actually is!

This one's a little bit different insofar as it's 'judgement day' for the Panasonic NV-V8000 VHS video recorder. The capstan motor is finally freed and the timing redone as a result and we find out what's going on with the front loading system BUT this machine has a dark past!
Any help with parts for this great machine would be gratefully received and willing to pay reasonable costs for them too - I just so want to see this machine working again and make it's owner happy. It's been quite a roller coaster but we've made progress. I did manage to find a new old-stock pinch roller but at £96, I think it's a bit out of the question!
Must make a note to myself - check the whole deck and heads before starting to do to much! I got a bit too carried away with what this machine is to do these checks and the description from the owner implied it was just faulty and had worked at some point...
Hope you enjoyed this one despite it's outcome and so much more to come too.

38:12 This strange mark on the lower head drum is there on purpose. It is almost precisely where head leaves the tape so i think it has something to do with tape path alignment. I have the same mark in my NV-W1, FS2000 and V8000.
@MrBetaByte
@MrBetaByte 5 месяцев назад
I'm not too sure on that - it's not that clear on the video but it's about a centimeter back from where the tape leaves the drum. It is very odd.

@@MrBetaByte I'm not 100% certain about my theory either. Probably only retired Panasonic engineers who were designing them know the answer.

@@andrzejnowaczyk8074 I have the same mark on a NV-F77 that I recently bought and the lower drum is shinier in the tape path between them. I thought it might just be a sign that the machine has a lot of hours on it. Mine works really good though no signs in the picture quality of worn heads.

Yes. I can confirm this protrusion is normal. I noticed it on both of my NV-FS200 machines. It might be there to create a tiny gap between the tape and the lower drum to minimize drum wear.

I really enjoyed your video! That machine is fascinating, especially the complex gearing system. However, I'm not sure how it can function with so many potential points of failure. I hope you can fix it because it would be great to see it working again. I'm curious though, if you manage to get it operational, what sets it apart from other VCRs?

I'm on the case with getting this up and running with some fantastic support from the community. This is quite a special machine mainly for it's editing functions that are very unique but a video on that to come (hopefully!)

Kind of like my Panasonic 1860 industrial VHS machine timing was pretty fussy.

It really has to be spot on and can be quite a fiddle!

At first glance it looks a bit like the mech could have been based on the iQ mechanism used in the broadcast models like the AG7350 from the same time and maybe shared some parts with them but looking closer idk if it shares much with those either
@MrBetaByte

I hear what you're saying. Panasonic decks all look like they could be sharing components but, as you say, when you actually start comparing the components, they are quite unique. Makes things a bit more challenging!

@@MrBetaByte I mean a lot of them do since they kept using the mechanisms over several years and over models in the product range like most manufacturers but this model had a very unique mech due to the small/large cassette gimmick.

Hi, I always enjoy watching your warts and all videos, very informative👍🙂 Did you ever manage to get this machine up and running, fully? I have two machines one immaculate and one higher hours. The immaculate one has been stored in a spare room. The high hours has been in a loft. Both of them were working last time I use them. Neither of them are working now.😭 I have only popped the lid on the high hours machine and it appears to have the same capstan problem that you experienced. I'm guessing the low hours machine has exactly the same problem. Both machines load the cassettes correctly and half load.They will fast forward and rewind without any issues, although one is noisier than the other 😫

Thank you so much; really glad you enjoy the videos and definately warts and all! There is another part to the series to come soon and a lot of parts need to be changed to get it up and running (which I now have). These are so worth getting working if you can as they are just such a unique and great piece of kit.

@@MrBetaByte I particularly like your videos because you seem to have a similar taste in machines, that I used to own namely Sony C9, SLHF-950. When it came to VHS I had a number of JVC machines but I always gravitated towards Panasonic because their still frames and frame advance manipulation was superior to JVC and coupled with TDK tapes the S-VHS picture quality was better as well.( which clearly annoys people Who can't see past JVC) With the exception of NV-FS200, which I found had inferior picture quality to the N-VFS100 and was sent back immediately, the NV v8000 was just a sublime deck to use and own. Frustrating then, that both my decks have gone on the blink, when they were previously both working fine. 😭 One being immaculate and low hours 😫 I still have a couple of FS100s(because they were easily the second best Panasonic I've owned) I'm just not sure where they are in the house at the moment 🤣 Have you ever come across or used the Mitsubishi B80 and B82 super VHS machines, they seemed quite impressive but were sensitive to tapes to get the best picture quality.

Just out of curiosity: what is the serial number of this machine I have a I1ME 00185 Which looks like your unit and has exactly the same problem with the cap stan. I have an older machine B1ME00049 identical head part number, working.(I'm confident this machine has not been apart before because all the case screws cracked off). I can also concur with other comments on here, that the bruise/lump/mark on the lower head drum is present on both machines 👍

@MrBetaByte Месяц назад
That's very interesting on the head drum 'lump' - I'll see when I check the parts I've been sent. Will update you on the serial number - probably on the next video if I remember! Really hope I can get this one going.

@@MrBetaByte I don't suppose you know of anyone that still likes playing with these machines, (since you are no longer taking on any more work). I would like to get both of them working properly again 🤞🙂
