Just done a similar Panasonic VCR doing very strange things! like yours, removal & cleaning the mode switch got it sorted. I did not have a problem with the IC, but thanks for mentioning it, will bear it in mind if the machine plays up in the future.

I enjoy the repitition of watching you taking the machine apart. The tricks of the trade that you know. I need to find a good Oscilliscope, too. I've got to find out who out there has the belts. I know someone has got a hoard of them somewhere. I really hope all the VCRs aren't all going to the landfills. There are still many many tapes out there that are still good to play. I have at least five hundred of them and I want to buy more. I've got four machines that I have to repair. Most are just tape eating problems. You've given me hope for my machines.

Panasonic stopped selling VHS machines in 2012, I think by then their only ones were VHS/DVD combi ones. The last non-brandname cheapo VHS machines disappeared in 2016. Meanwhile new VHS cassettes are not being made any more. Unused stock VHS tapes can still be found on ebay, the prices for which are rising because the market is drying up. You can obviously buy used VHS machines on ebay too. I've got 7 Panasonic VHS HiFi machines in stock in my cellar so I can continue playing my old recordings for decades. :) Including an S-VHS and two multi standard NV-W1.

why not convert them to digital ? using a USB capture card for PC , but you need a PC that at most is windows 7 to be sure or find a DVD recorder that stil works and connect it to VHS machine , then you can throw the tapes in the garbage and the VCR machines at ebay

Wiz kid as usual. lol. Enjoyed the vid. I've got the Panasonic DVD VCR combo. I fixed the mode switch once,, it worked a pretty long time afterwards,, now the power started dragging down when I'd start a tape or put one in...and it would shut down then I would start it up again and it would run. Weird. I've got to look at it again when I've got time, the DVD part doesn't load half the time and it just sits there and tries, then it'll just say error, no tape or sometimes it'll load and play. I'm working on a old Holms Guitar Amp now, new elecrolytic capacitors, it needed a matching pair of output power BJTs they were off , it didn't have speakers so I just got those in. They look pretty good. 2, 10 inch spkers with a silver cone, black dust cover and black cloth surround ... Looks good through the grill cloth :)). My bench is getting full. I'm rambling. Thanks for the vid.

Colton Rushton, It's a novelty and a cute example of how small they could make crt's :-D Some people think old tech is rubbish, but the old crt's lasted a very loooooong time. Modern displays don't last so well, they eather fail early or the next wizz bang version is on the horizon to be sold to us, Again and again....
@rawr51919
@rawr51919 5 лет назад
@@zx8401ztv Agree. They're more durable than their successors ever will be, but they sacrifice detail at such a low size. Sure, it's a novelty, but you can tell in the vid that almost no detail can be made out from within the small screen.

MMmmm smoker's mecha state! "oh vhs looks bad" - LOL! It won't look so bad on that little crt! Use your home theater speakers with it maybe. I fixed a vcr like that (older emerson version I think) for a relative back in 1994. Needed a belt and the guy at the local shop showed me what to do, he said all of the same things except maybe the re-soldering. I the machine also had a broken cassette mechanism, drive gear would slip on the sliding rack gear in the cassette loader. I ended up jamming something in there to press the plastic frame of the cassette loader toward the drive gear to get it working but it really needed a better fix and I didn't know back then.

I still have a vcr/dvd player combo unit my mom gave me for Christmas in 2002. Haven't used it in a long time, mostly have tapes with camcorder recordings on it. Dave, do you know where the mode switch is located in a JVC HDR-142? Could it be that is not a mechanical mode switch, but an optic one that uses a system similar to that you find in a PC mouse? Because I don't seem to find anything that looks like a mode switch in this model. Although I guess that if it was optical, it wouldn't need cleaning. Thank you.
@12voltvids
@12voltvids 3 года назад
No don't know the mechanism by model number. Some early JVC did use optical sensors on the cam gear. Others used a linear (slide) switch under the circuit board on the bottom of mechanism which requires removal of reel drive motor to access. Optical units do fail. The led gets weak and doesn't detect the transition.

Best Brand/Model to buy used to transfer old tapes & home camcorder to digital in your opinion.
@12voltvids
@12voltvids Год назад
For 8mm / hi8 I would pick one of the digital 8 models that have analog playback. Most did but a few were digital only. These all ha e built in tbc and will output a DV signal over FireWire so a FireWire interface is all that is needed. For vhs I would go with a late model. The older ones are usually worn out. I use Toshiba dvr7 for standard VHS and a JVC hrs9911 for svhs. The dvr7 is a DVD recorder / VHS combo. Tapes straight to DVD or into a closer alliance pro to be captured to .mp4 directly.

Sony SLV-N55. As I was cleaning the heads, "somehow" I broke a piece that has a tape guide attached to a white plastic "flag". Somehow, it sits down in a hole and you rotate it to lock it in place. I just bought three other same model VCR's for parts and just cannot figure out how to pull that tape guide piece out without breaking off that delicate locking tab. Do I have to go underneath the chassis and remove that big pulley that has the rubber belt on it? If so, how do I remove THAT pulley, too. I'm so used to being able to buy repair manuals for any car or truck I've ever owned but Sony just doesn't sell them for their products. Even their repair manual doesn't have a good picture of it. I think it is the Guide Cassette Door & Hook which is right next to the Lever Unit Pinch Assembly. Who the hell made up those names? So, any ideas on how to get that Guide Cassette Door & Hook Assy out?

Dave, I just started testing a PV-S4167. Supposedly it's an S-VHS machine. Turns on, loads tape fine. Plays tape. There's some green spots that appear on the screen regardless of the tape. Is this likely caused by bad caps? I see all of these extra little PCBs sticking up from the main PCBs and wires everywhere. Did they just take a standard VHS machine and add a bunch of modules to make it "SVHS"? Never seen anything like it. Not sure if I even want to attempt to repair it.
@12voltvids
@12voltvids 3 года назад
PV-S was a super vhs, and yes basically the machine is the same (different head gap on the drum for the higher frequencies required) but you are basically correct, the Hi-Band circuits were on modules that were added to the boards on the svhs models. That is so they could use a standard run board, to keep costs down.

@@12voltvids hey that's great! Just got back in from the garage. Did my first disassembly and it's a JVC HR-6900U. No audio, so I tore it down and it has cracked solder joints where the 2 RCA jacks are soldered to the board. Looks like I'm going to have to desolder the mode switch too. There's no use putting this back together (or trying...lol) and not cleaning the switch. My questions were about the audio, but I'm sure I will have others. I have about 15 VCR's and 20 or so 8mm, HI8 and digital cameras also. I even have one of those old Magnavox Movie Maker VHS jobs. It's an SVHS with S-Video in and out. It's in decent cosmetic shape, but when I got it, it had been taken apart and they did a half-a** job putting it back together. With power hooked up to it, and I slide the power button over, I have to hold it there for anything to happen. And all that happens is you can faintly hear a motor turning, that's it. Then as soon as you let off the power switch, it stops. Same with the eject button. Hold it down and motor turns, let off and it stops. I'm going to really try to get it going, because I think it's really cool to have S-Video in and out on an old SVHS camera. It's the little things that hold my attention...lol.
