Thanks for all your work on this Graham. That battery contact design isn’t something I would expect to see in a cheap toy let alone in what was a top end Japanese made Panasonic!
I saw a similarly dodgy point-contact power supply arrangement on a Sony ICF-M750L. Again a bit of a surprise given the expectations (and experience) of quality for that brand.
I just dug this receiver out of a drawer, and it hasn't been used in decades. Fresh batteries and it works perfectly. I recall listening to when the Berlin Wall came down on SW back when I was using it. There is actually one thing not working, and that is the "Time Set". Pushing it does absolutely nothing. Thoughts on what that might be?
@@Radiocruncher I am pretty sure they are carbon. I have a few buttons that need cleaning, but not sure how to get at them. Looks like a complete disassembly is required. Any Comments on doing this.
E pops up now and again when switching it on. I give it a gentle tap and then it comes on. Maybe it's because it's old. I have been advised that it is tempromental thus it needs to be handled with care. Like us all nowadays. I have a set in top condition and I am proud to own it. Many thanks to Graham for the hardware. Thanks to Tim for selling it to me for a bargain price. 😀
The tiny frequency encoder is a mechanical contact point interrupter. I had a broken b65 and took out cube. Drilling a super tiny hole into bottom let me spray Liquid Gold Cleaner inside. It worked quite well. BUT its so small a error could destroy it. Caution needed. The encoder from B45 works also. Part not available anywhere.
My Sangean ATS909x has a weak battery spring, just a strip that doesn’t have as much tension as it should. Also the encoder skips around at times. The keypad has similarities to these Sangean too. Hopefully the cap and transistor are the last bits it needs. Remember kids, always double check the polarity.
I have one too and I am also surprised at how bad this design is! This was a set that cost around £180 when it came out in the UK. Mind you, when it works it is up there with the legendary 2001D, a set that you are all too familiar with!
@@Radiocruncher Hi again. My 65 can play up too. I make sure that batteries are fully charged and I try to keep it on for a while. Its worth remembering that these sets were not made to last as long as they have. However, It's a favourite of mine and its younger brother the B45 is particularly good on MW. It's worth looking out for one for yourself. 73 and GDX
Hi Jim. Yes I was impressed with it and am tempted to pick one up for myself. Trouble is I like the Sony radios too much and need to move a few out to make room. All the best Graham
please tell me the same problem is present on it as on Sony receivers? dry out Capacitors need to be changed over time, or is there no such problem on Panasonic?
Hi. Electrolytic capacitors do have a limited lifetime. The better manufacturers used higher quality components which tend to last longer but as soon as problems start then usually it’s down to failing capacitors
I'm surprised that Panacronic would make such a crappy battery connection. Well you obviously fixed it a while ago and it must of continued to work :-D
Bought a Panasonic RF-B40, never managed to get the LCD work properly. Besides other issues inside the unit. Seller tricked me in buying garbage. Beware buying a RF-B40, LCD is happy to fail.
