Panasonic Energy provided an update on their $4 billion electric vehicle battery plant, still under construction, in De Soto, Kansas. When operating at full capacity, the manufacturing facility will produce 66 lithium-ion batteries per second.
The largest economic development project in Kansas’ history is on track to open in spring 2025, with the launch of Panasonic Energy’s new electric vehicle battery facility in De Soto.
On Thursday, Panasonic plant officials provided an inside look of their construction progress to members of the media, giving the group behind the scenes access to the facility as construction continues.

This is an amazing facility! I'd kill to have a factory like this in my hometown which has been suffering from job losses since an immigration-application facility was shuttered and relocated 6 years ago..

What kind of batteries will it be making, Li-Ion, LFP? My guess is the older Lithium Ion technology.

Yeah but what are you going to pay people that work there and how much money do you charge for the batteries you produce can you say scam and bought off the local government you can put money on that

The vast majority of people that work in such facilities are highly paid engineers. The production itself is all automated. And secondly capitalism operates with economies of scale. The more you scale up production of a given technology, the cheaper it gets to make. The cost of batteries has been steadily declining for the past decade, as more and more production has come online and the supply chains have matured. As well as due to the technological advancement that inevitably comes from scaling any new industry as well.

It's about 1 km west of Kill creek and directly adjacent to the old Sunflower ammunition plant.

The Kill Creek Observation Tower provides a nice, if distant, view of the factory.
