Panasonic SG-999 Music Center from 1970. The Matsushita FA707A turntable repair. Had to begin w/slideshow, because as usual, a simple repair turns into an unwanted nightmare. This was received with a seized motor. No problem. Buildup of burnt oil on the top motor oilite bearings causing seizure. There's been discussions re: use of lacquer thinner vs. less aggressive solvents like Naphtha on these motors. Was discredited when I mentioned someone had advised me against using Lacquer thinner, as it can attack the wick inside the bearing. Many disagreed. Maybe OK on US Alliance or GI motors from yesteryear, but this is 1970 Matsushita. Well going on that advice, and against my better judgement I used the Lacquer thinner & after witnessing a whitish cloudy residue, that is what seemed to be the case. The use of Lacquer thinner now rendered it useless. It shrunk, or somehow compromised the wick in the top bearing. The bearing was just rolling around inside the self aligning retaining basket. The old wick material somehow had to be replaced. Trial & error attempts got the original back to new condition using similar Japanese felt wick, impregnated with oil, made for high temperature, from an older maintenance kit item for copier fusing units. Worked very well, & got this motor back to like new condition, & performance. This player is now a thing of beauty, & a new favorite. Speed is spot on, motor wick is full of fresh synthetic oil. Motor is silent, & runs cool to the touch.
