I discuss all the settings on the Panasonic UB9000. These settings also apply to the sister model UB820 also, which uses almost exactly the same features. This video explains all the settings that these players have and why I choose them. It's an in-depth discussion & explanation of 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray Players, and how I've set players up from the very early years of LaserDisc, DVD, and Blu-ray. It's a long video, but I wanted to put something out there that fully discusses the settings on this player, and how to avoid any setup issues on this player even on other players.
I hope you enjoy it, and I hope you can take something from it.
BEST SETTING TLDR = 4K, 12-bit, Auto 4:4:4 chroma for ease of use.
This setting makes it so chroma will be dropped in favor of color depth which will always result in the best image quality possible for 4K HDR, 60 FPS content, and 4K HDR 24 FPS content.
CORRECTIONS
--I meant to say Technics for the CD/SACD Player, not Toshiba.
--I meant to say Auto 12-bit instead of just Auto.
--I meant to say FEL instead of MEL when talking about the higher bit-rate version of metadata for Dolby Vision.
Sometimes there's a lot going through my mind at once, and catch myself naming something wrong. Hope that helps it's anybody misunderstood those parts of the video.
HDMI 2.0 SPEC
Player settings should be 12-bit. In the case of Gemini Man and 60 frames per second content in HDR, chroma should be set to Auto 4:4:4 so the player retains bit-depth at 12-bit and keeps to the HDMI 2.0 spec by switching to 4:2:2. Or manually set 4:2:2 chroma for all content. As long as your display is good, this shouldn't be an issue, and both should look equal. This will keep the 12-bit color depth at 60 FPS, 4:2:2, and 4K. In this case, Auto (from a usability standpoint) is best because it will correctly adapt to the HDMI 2.0 spec and rating bit-depth, and that is the most important thing. Older displays are best set to auto so it switches between 4:4:4 and 4:2:2 as needed because displaying 4:2:2 might look incorrect in some cases. This is the best setting for usability for all display types also. However, I like to control things and manually set 4:4:4 chroma, knowing that I'm not watching 60FPS content.
If you set the player to 10-bit, 60 FPS content will downgrade to 8-bit because 60 FPS content is out of the HDMI spec at 4:4:4. You don't ever want this, so always use 12-bit.
4:4:4 / 4:2:2 NOTE
If they don't look equal then there is a weakness in the chain somewhere. Check the Player, TV, and even receiver or any passthrough device you are using to see if anything is getting in the way. When both look equal, the Player and the Display complement each other perfectly, and this is the best-case scenario when watching 4K HDR 60 FPS content.
If your TV has issues displaying 4:4:4 and you can see issues, or have seen reports that 4:4:4 simply doesn't work on your TV then force 4:2:2. I've done this on my older TVs and it looked perfect when using 4:2:2 so do what suits you best.
Animation is a good place to test 4:4:4 and 4:2:2 using 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray discs. How do curved objects look? The Spears and Munsil test disc also has many useful patterns to check to see if your display or even player has issues with 4:2:2 or 4:4:4.
PLAYER INFORMATION
The new 4K models have a K on the end. This means they have brand-new chips for audio. This was because of the AKM factory fire. The audio chips have the same specs as the previous model, but I have heard reports of smoother audio performance using analog outs. I use another player for that, so I can't speak to that, but if that is the case it's always nice to hear.

Fellow LG C9 user here with a UB 820 (from twitter) and watching this vid was fun. I've calibrated my TV and Home theater but I always love watching these kind of videos just in case there's something new I can learn. Funny is the S&M disc menu, I've had that on my screen so much lol ! Love the Panasonic players, only down side is the playback of some digital files. Not an issue if you're just using it for discs mainly. You've caused me to change a few of my settings, mainly the ones set to Auto. Solid logic behind it and I probably left it that way out of an abundance of caution. Thanks for all the info here !

Sony displays with Dolby Vision come default off, so that has to be found in the setting and turned on. For that reason I connect the 820 directly to the display. The 420, which doesn't do Dolby Vision, is connected to the (Denon) receiver. And in the 420, HDR comes default Off, and in the 820, both HDR and Dolby Vision are default Off.

Hi, I just wanted to comment on your video. I'm a first time viewer and I need to say WOW THANK YOU FOR THIS VIDEO. As you mentioned you noticed there really isn't any videos out there providing in depth walk through for this player. The amount of time RU-vid describing step by step each setting was exactly what I needed and what I've been looking for and researching for, for soo long. I currently have on this player for maybe almost a year and a half two years as well as a LG OLED C1 TV. I'm not new to TVs and tech but I'm not super super experienced and just like you I always like to look at different settings and I wonder different things so when I came across your video I was very appreciative for it. My TV is also professionally calibrated. With that being said I have two questions for you and maybe you could provide some insight. 1. With my old led TV I have the setting for HDR tone mapping on the TV itself the LG C1 but the player also has the HDR optimizer for HDR content I've asked this question on some sites but never really got a good concrete answer it always seems 50/50. But the question is is should I leave HDR tone mapping set to ON as well as the HDR optimizer set to "ON" on the player? Or should I turn the HDR tone mapping setting to "OFF" on the TV and set to "ON"on the player, or lastly do Off for the player and tone mapping ON for the TV. I wasn't sure if having them both on if they both cause conflicting tone mapping issues or not, As knowledgeable as you seem I figured this would be a good question for you. My second question is relating to the sound settings I currently have a Sennheiser Ambeo Max sound bar, So I was curious what your recommendations are for some of those sound adjustments that you mentioned in the video as I know you mentioned about having the AV system set up and surround sounds but since this is a soundbar it's a bit different but it does play a lot of the audio that you mentioned If you can get back to me I would really appreciate it and also you have gained a follower.
@hdmoviesource
@hdmoviesource Год назад
Hey Vincent, thanks for the great response and questions. I've seen in some cases were using both HDR Optimizer on the Player and the TV is beneficial. What the HDR Optimizer does is cap the nits at 1000 nits. This is more digestible by most TVs out today. Then the TV can use that information and optimize from there. I would always use the optimizer on the player but see if the TVs version doesn't crush blacks. It certainly does make the image look brighter. Some may call this double tone mapping, but it's done in a sequential order, Player and then the TV, so it's not the same as double tone mapping a Dolby Vision image. I'm often testing out using it on the TV even after owning my LGC9 for years now. So in some situations it definitely looks better and can do a better job than the player. I don't have a sound bar, but is it possible to send the audio through as bit-stream?
@vincent-ui4ry
@vincent-ui4ry Год назад
@@hdmoviesource thank you for your reply and your in depth explanation. I do notice that with the HDR optimizer and HDR tone mapping both turned on the image is much brighter. Which for me I don't mind. I have had multiple tvs professionally calibrated over the years by a well known person in the industry. And sometimes I question if the image I'm seeing on the player is the creators intent such as sky shots or day time shots where the blue of the sky looks darker, then what I would expect it to be even after having my eyes trained to see the image in calibrated picture settings. So having extra brightness I don't mind sometimes, but then the question in my mind is that the way it should be. It's always a back and forth. As For the soundbar I don't have option to change it from PCM or bitstream on soundbar. But rather on the TV to change inputs from PCM or bitstream.
@hdmoviesource
@hdmoviesource Год назад
@@vincent-ui4ry Oh I see, so the sound comes from the TV to the soundbar? Okay, Yeah, I think there's an option to send as PCM or bit-stream. Bit-stream is typically better. I do enjoy teh brighter image also. It's nice to play around and see what things look like.

Hi there, Just finished the video. I downloaded a copy to have offline for reference as the info in this video is great. I got myself the Panasonic 420, per recommendation of an AVSForum member who had that and the 820. I have a 2016 Sony TV, which doesn't have Dolby Vision. So, I decided to save on features i don't need, or will use in the foreseeable future. With the exception of DV, and the analog outputs, The play is identical as far as software and the HDR optimizer. I also live in a small apartment, so I don't have the space for a full HT setup, so I have my TV, an Atmos compatible sound bar, and this player in a small bedroom. So far have been very pleased with the Panasonic, it replaced a Sony UBP-X700, which is now the backup player. One thing I wanted to ask you is would the 7.1 audio reformatting setting make a 7.1 track more compatible with a 5.1 setup? You didn't mention anything along those lines in the video, so thought I would ask. Either way very good video, will keep a copy around on my Plex server for quick reference (if needed.) have a great day!

My other video goes into more detail about that specific setting, please check it out. Thanks for watching.

A greatly informative and detailed video! I changed the Edge Correctness from 0 to 2 while playing a Blu-ray today and didn't notice any ringing! I own a lower series in Panasonic's UHD line than the one you reviewed here. I have a Panasonic DP-UB420 UHD player that primarily has customization options for HDR10+ content. I can play UHDs that only have Dolby Vision on the discs (via my player's Dynamic Range Conversion Output, I think), which is connected to my Samsung Q60B QLED TV. For 4K discs that only have Dolby Vision, would you recommend setting the Dynamic Range Adjustment slider to -1 like you do on yours? Whenever I play a Blu-ray disc, would you recommend setting the resolution to Auto, 4K, or 1080p? I always set the Wide Color Gamut to perform a HDR to SDR conversion when playing those type of discs. How about DVDs? Should I set the resolution to 480p or a different resolution? Thanks so much for your comments and feedback in this video forum!
@hdmoviesource
@hdmoviesource Год назад
Hi Stephen, I actually made another video of Dynamic Range Adjustment, please check it out. -1 is fine for getting the brightness of HDR10 compared to Dolby Vision, but I soon realized that it's not the best setting. I now prefer +2, specifically for my C9 OLED, so it depends on what TV you have, and what year it was made. The 420 is a very good player still. I would always set the resolution to 4K, and I never allow the player to change the color gamut. I would upscale DVD to 4K resolution, same with Blu-ray because I don't want to have to change resolution every time I play a DVD or Blu-ray for any reason. But, please check out my other vide on Dynamic Range for HDR Stephen, I think it helps explain a lot.
@stephenlarson3128
@stephenlarson3128 Год назад
@@hdmoviesource Those are wonderful suggestions! Thank you. I also will increase the Dynamic Range Adjustment to +2 on my player's slider. I definitely want to watch your topic-specific video on D.R.A. One follow-up question: will the UHD player tone map differently depending on which output resolution is specified in the settings? It seems like it would vary. I will just keep my resolution set to "4K." Keeping it there would make sense for movies on Blu-ray discs that have Digital Intermediates that were scanned at 4K resolution but then downsampled to 1920x1080 to accommodate the disc's video requirements. Without any reservation, I would want BD titles with 4K scans upscaled or upconverted to 3860x2160 because that's how they're truly intended to look. There are still quite a few films that have received 4K remasters but they've only been released on Blu-ray.

Great explanation dude! Question... My setup: Samsung S95B connected with the HW995B surround soundbar via HDMI-earc. 1. Will the UB820 provide me with Dolby Atmos audio? If so, will it do that if I connect the UB820 directly to my TV, or will I have to connect a second hdmi into the soundbar? 2. Since my TV doesn't support Dolby Vision, will HDR optimizer work on movies that support DV? 3. Should I leave the HDR display type on OLED, or is LED High a better fit for my modern QD-OLED? 4. Should I turn off tone mapping on my tv and leave it off when watching HDR10+ also? Or only when using HDR optimizer?

Thank you. 1. If the soundbar can accept HDMI and play Dolby Atmos then you should be good. But I know very little about your soundbar so I'm not sure. 2. Yes, the HDR optimizer works on all HDR movies. 3. You could use High because that's 1500 nits, and the reason why is that your display will tone map up 4000 nits. Actually, if it tone maps up to 4000 nits you may not need to even turn the HDR Optimizer on. 4. Good question. I would see which one looks better. Chances are the TV maybe doing a really good job as long as the TV was released in 2023/2024.

Thanks for your tips you know your stuff sir. I listened to what you said about HDR2020 to SDR2020 setting on the panasonic is a good setting for projector owners. My experiments with sim2 projector seem to confirm this. If my projector recognises HDR it goes very dark. It is unwatchable. I tried tweaking the contrast setting to get it brighter but it then washes out highlights even with HDR optimiser on. It seems much better to convert the HDR to SDR because you still retain the 4k resolution and the wide colour gamut can work much better for the projector which is giving the best it can between light and dark areas of the image. i am wondering why people think they can get a better picture sending it in HDR to the projector. I know projectors cannot do HDR properly. It would be good to see a comparison video. Thanks

Hey Donald, I would try the low LCD setting, that is 500 nits. But, you can try the 1000-nit version and see if you display tonemaps okay. Excellent video!! I also have a C9 (calibrated) and a Panasonic UB820. One of the things I have recently experimented with is the Dynamic Range Adjustment slider on the 820. I have Dynamic Tone Mapping turned “On” with my C9. I know at times it overbrightens the picture. To fix this, I have been lowering the Dynamic Range Adjustment slider. I have been going back and forth between -5 and -6. That seems to be the area where HDR10 matches Dolby Vision pretty well. It’s not 100% since I think the midtones are still a bit wonky, but it looks really close to DV. I don’t have any measuring devices but I’m wondering what your viewpoints would be on this?
@hdmoviesource
@hdmoviesource Год назад
I wouldn't use dynamic tone mapping on the C9. It doesn't do a faithful job at tone-mapping unfortunately. In my opinion, you are best letting Panasonic use the OLED setting in the HDR Optimizer and turn dynamic tone mapping off. I don't like to deviate too far from what movies should look like. LGs dynamic tone mapping (unfortunately goes too far for me). I have experimented though like you using both to achieve a certain look, Josh. Hey, have fun with it. For fun, you could try low LCD and then use dynamic tone mapping also, or even one of the projector settings, and just see if certain things work out nicely. But, again, I just don't like to deviate too much from the directors' intent and image accuracy.

@@hdmoviesource: Thanks for the reply. I've actually done a lot of testing with turning DTM on the C9 "Off" and using just the Panny's Optimizer at the OLED setting (Or any other setting for that matter). I actually use the Super High Luminance Setting normally. The problem I see is that the overall APL just doesn't get as bright as say something being played in Dolby Vision. I'm not sure if this is how it goes but from what I have read up, LG HDR TVs don't look at all of the metadata on each disc. It only looks at the mastering monitor. So if some discs that only have a MAXLL of only 500 nits but the mastering monitor it was mastered on was 4,000 nits, the LG TV would tone map it down to 4,000 nits. That's why the overall APL is dimmer. With DTM "On," the algorithm is different and "guesses" what the screen should look like. As you said though, it over does it. That's why I have noticed that by lowering the Dynamic Range Adjustment slider, it dims the picture down to the point that highlights that were blown out by the DTM function are now showing back up again. It's not 100% perfect as it still has issues with midtones (which I'm not sure if there is a setting I can adjust to fix that) but it's pretty close. I wish all discs had Doloby Vision. That would fix a lot of these issues, haha!

@@PUsokrJosh305 That's a very interesting theory Josh. It's possible, not sure if it really is doing that but you never know. @hdmoviesource
@hdmoviesource Год назад
HDR content doesn't run through the typical NTSC and PAL system, so that's fine anyway, and doesn't matter. Does the player have an automatic mode in Europe? This should only effect 480 p/i content and 576 from my understanding. I don't think movies on Blu-ray are made in PAL or NTSC either, so it really only applied to a niche situation unless there are 1080p discs in PAL. So, PAL and NTSC should only effect (in PALs case) 576 p/i. I'm not 100% sure about this, but chances are that it shouldn't affect Blu-ray content and definitely doesn't affect 4K UHD content anyway Richard. If PAL and NTSC are only for resolutions below 1080p then pick whichever setting is most relevant is there is not an automatic detection of PAL and NTSC. But I wonder if they consider anything that's 25p is thought of as PAL?
@richardh3761
@richardh3761 Год назад
This is what I thought also, the lines of PAL & NTSC shouldn’t apply to HD or HDR. PAL is only stated on DVDs I have, that are region 2 (or 5). None of my Blu-Rays state PAL and I have many from different regions (A, B & C). Because of the option of system I was puzzled as, like you say, HDR doesn’t run through the NTSC PAL system. All regions of DVDs play fine, regardless of system selection. There is no 'Auto' selection just NTSC or PAL and your UB9000 doesn’t have the option. Maybe they covered themselves for Europe market OR if I still ran it to a CRT screen 🤣

Firmware version 1.82 was published earlier this week for the UB9000 and UB820. It allows users to explicitly select between what it calls type 1 and type 2 Dolby Vision modes if the player determines that the display device supports both types. Type 1 is also known as standard Dolby Vision or TV-led Dolby Vision where the display device performs tone mapping. Type 2 is also known as low latency Dolby Vision or player-led Dolby Vision where the player performs tone mapping. A player that runs firmware version 1.82 picks type 2 by default if connected to a high luminance device like an LG G3, LG G4, Sony A95L, or Sony Bravia 9 like in the bad firmware version 1.76, but then allows the user to override this choice if the player knows that the display device accepts both types. This video could use an update to incorporate this new setting.

Okay, so the Dolby Vision update was for the C3 and above displays with high brightness. Because those displays don't pick the correct Dolby mode.
@jnvivian
@jnvivian Месяц назад
@@hdmoviesource It is the player’s fault, not the display’s fault, for picking and sending the wrong mode when the displays claim a maximum brightness of 1,200 nits or higher in the EDID data sent to the player. Panasonic did this in order to suppress overly bright subtitles in some poorly designed Blu-ray Discs because the player can do so in low latency Dolby Vision mode. The G3 and brighter Dolby Vision displays accept whatever mode that they are sent by the player. The new menu option allows you to override the player’s default pick of low latency Dolby Vision if the display is bright enough and the display claims to accept both modes. The problem is that low latency Dolby Vision does a worse job than standard Dolby Vision on TVs that accept both modes.

When the player is set to auto, the player upscales 1080p to 4K anyway. Auto really means, auto-detect the display, not play content in native resolution. It just means the player will fill in the rest of the chroma instead of your TV. Most of the time, the player will be better than the TV. However, many TVs do not like 4:4:4 chroma.
