In this episode we take a look at one of the most useful and versatile plants of the tropical north...the Pandanas, also known as screw palm. We look at where it grows, how to harvest the leaf bases which are a good food source, how it’s leaves can be used for cordage making and firelighting, how the trunk can be used to transport fire and how the fruit can be used to make a sweet drink.
Hope you enjoy the video and thanks for watching!
This video is presented by Gordon Dedman, founder of Bushcraft Survival Australia (BSA), an outdoor bushcraft survival school dedicated to teaching genuine and authentic modern and traditional outdoor living skills through carefully designed educational courses.

Mate, really enjoyed this one as i live in FNQ. Is it possible to roast the nut inside the red/orange seed directly in a fire to extract the seed easier? Or would that not work? Love the videos mate. Cheers

I have never tried roasting and then extracting the nut but I would assume it would hard the timber. with modern tools it is easy enough to get them from a ripe nut but still hard work for a little nut. Having said that they are nice. I have them on my block and I get some every year.

Well done Gordon. I have had the privledge of going out hunting and collecting with traditional Aboriginal people in Arnhem Land on a few occasions, but missed out on the pandanus foraging and basket making. Such a useful plant. The old ladies tell me that you can strip the spines off the leaves easily, but I know I will end up with lots of spines in me, while they do it with ease.
@BushcraftSurvivalAustralia

it's a marvellous experience going out food foraging with aboriginal woman, the custodians of the plant knowledge in their society and they make it look so easy when they slice the spines off the Pandanus leaf with their thumbs. Watching them weave is wonderful . Thanks for watching.

@BushcraftSurvivalAustralia
@BushcraftSurvivalAustralia 4 года назад
It depends on where you are. If it was a river you would throw a bucket in. As this was a small spring with a larger waterway behind it, I walked the banks looking for any sign, slide marks, beds etc. I would only collect water from a small spring like that if It was very shallow and I could clearly see the bottom with any approaches open and clearly visible as you don't want one sneaking up. Watch and observe. Thanks for watching.
