My husband told me to watch how close his fingers were to the bit. I knew what to expect but I still SCREAMED when I saw. That was really scary and will fuel my intrusive thoughts for the foreseeable future.

Great and efficient way to make the inside of cabinet doors more elegant. I don’t use my backcutters after watching this. Great video, sir!

And this is how not to use a shaper. Please check out some other videos to learn about fence placement and guards. This is an example of a guy that's done it a million times and has gotten away with it. That one time will severely alter your life.

You made a beautiful door, Now I was a shaper. And By the way I get that same back lash about my fingers being so close to the saw all the time, I guess people are just to worried about our digits lol

adding to my query; it looks ike you do have a rub collar set under that panel cutter, may I ask what diameter the rub collar is? That makes a lot of sense especially when cutting the rounded cathedral arch. Thanks.

Thank you for posting this. I have recently upgraded from a router table to shaper so I can use all the information I can get. But isn’t that a whole lot of cutter sitting out there with no protection around it?

I always thought a "Raised Panel" was called such because the panel is actually higher than the rail and stile when assembled. I understand the use of the back cutter but then the panel is no longer raised above the frame as opposed to machining only one side of the panel thereby allowing it to sit higher than the frame when assembled...

quick question, arent you afraid of kickback from the cutter when pushing through on the arch edge of that panel? just looks too easy :)

I don't understand how you control the depth of the back cut when you make cut the curved side of the panel. It looks like you are freehanding it, but when you show the inside of the door it looks like the cut was guided. Is it just the hand of the master? Thanks!

Can you show me or tell me where I can find a template to make those doors. Specifically where I can find a pattern to make the rounded top. All of my raised panel doors are made with all square panels. Using just straight cut rails and styles.

No need any wax just need good design blade with 6500 RPM spindle that will make good finish and you only need to put 200 paper.

This is all wrong. The rub collar goes on top of the cutter not beneath it. Look in the manual, that's what it says. Secondly they give you a guard to put over the cutter and he did not use it. Lastly you should not be wearing a ring or watch while working around machinery. My complaint is not against his workmanship its about a lack of safety.
@paddlefaster

I know I'm late to the party but I agree with you completely. This was more a video on how not to use a shaper. Some of these Old-Timers that I've been doing it for so long throw safety out the window.

Most shops run a raised panel head above the panel. So if you are running a bearing its below the cutter.

how do get to shape the board like that before you cut the raise panel?
@jwar2163
@jwar2163 Год назад
Band saw or jig saw after tracing the pattern onto the panel cutting freehand. Or using pattern template jig with band saw. Or using a router table or shaper with bearing /guide with template/pattern jig.

buth the shaper is just like a router ..whats the difference?
@ApexWoodworks
@ApexWoodworks 3 года назад
Raj, the two are similar, but there are significant differences. The main one is that a shaper is designed to spin much larger diameter and heavier cutters which results in higher quality work. It can also do the shaping in one pass on most pieces, which saves a lot of time. The shaper's bearings are also designed to handle significant loads, which a router's lightweight bearings cannot handle. And that's why router panel raising bits have such smaller diameters. Finally, a router is a very forgiving machine because of the much smaller sized bits. If you decide to get a shaper, read up on their operaton and pay attention to safe operating rules. The gentleman here has more experience operating these heavy machines than you or I will ever have, and he appears to be comfortable operating without guards. That's his choice, but something that is not shared with everyone.

A shaper like either model he has run in the thousands of dollars. I believe most of the people that have them have a little experience and realize the dangers of any blade. Have you considered that there are many tools far more dangerous than this shaper, such as a chainsaw, ladder or automobile?
