Lecture 11 is on Panel Methods, how we apply the elemental flow concepts to realistic aerodynamic shapes. It requires discretization of our body surface, and applying elemental flows to individual segments on the surface. Specifically, we look at the Source Panel Method and the Vortex Panel Method. By enforcing the "no penetration" boundary condition (normal velocity at the surface is zero), we can find the strength distributions of the sources or vortices to recreate the aerodynamic shape with streamlines.

Are Panel Methods, Boundary Element Methods (BEM), and Boundary Integral Methods (BIM) different names for the same methods?

I had to recruit a math friend help because Boundary Element Methods are more general mathematics. As I understand it, Boundary Element Methods are ways to solve Boundary Integral Equations, where Boundary Integral Equations come from changing a PDE on some domain to an integral over that domain's boundary. Panel Methods are a specific subset of Boundary Element Methods applied to inviscid irrotational flow (which leads to the Laplace equation) with particular choices of boundary elements based on elementary flows.

Could we please see a suite of panel methods written in Excel VBA that anyone can download and run.

I'm all for open-source publicly available tools, I wish I was competent enough to make it happen!

@@prof.vanburen I could do it all but I just don't have the time. Apart from my day job, I am currently tackling Maxwell's equations. We could do with a two dimensional panel method being applied first of all to an aerofoil generated by a Joukowski transformation to build up confidence and to show how it's done, all in the public domain.

Can you be a bit more specific? Generally, we look at the impact of a j-panel on an i-panel, and we end up adding all the surrounding j's. I'm not sure if this helps, but with more detail I might be a bit more helpful!

It would be great if you could do some numericals related to panel methods. having difficult time understanding them 😟😟😟

Something to think about moving forward! It's not my strength, so probably why I lean away from trying to dive deep into it. I share your struggles

Yep! The PDF versions of all the notes for both series can be found here: sites.udel.edu/vanburen/education/ Sometimes it helps to have the PDF to zoom in on small/messy handwriting.

Why is the correction at 13:28 is lambda/2 instead of any other numbers

Hey thanks for your comment and sorry for getting to this so late! The semester got away from me. This lambda/2 is the mathematical solution for when i=j when solved out (in a complicated way that I certainly don't understand). So it isn't an arbitrary constant, but the true solution that accounts for our inability to do the solution simply due to dividing by zero. Hope this helps!
