As the irrigation systems here in the Rocky Mountain region are passing 100 years old you will see more of these age related problems. Over the last few years several structures and lakes here required lowered levels of operation while the dams and structures were upgraded and repaired. The costs can be overwhelming to small irrigation systems. High cost tend to push decisions for major work off until problems suddenly rise to emergency levels.

Up here in Canada we're used to dealing with ice on lakes being driven by wind. When tons of ice starts to move it puts unbelievable forces on anything in its way. It also generates pressure when it expands while it forms, but that pressure is often alleviated by ice cracks as the sheet is thin when it first forms. Most concrete break walls designed to withstand ice pressure are sloped to allow wind driven ice to ride up and over if need be. It will be interesting to see what the Engineers come up with.
@troyhamon6666
@troyhamon6666 Месяц назад
The pressure is a result of changes in ice density. Ice at 32F is much larger than ice at 0F. As the ice surface cools, cracks form as it shrinks. These fill with water and freeze, so if it warms back up after a cold spell, the ice surface expands, leading to the creation of pressure ridges on water bodies large enough for the ice to flex and create them. When the pond or lake is not large enough for the ice to buckle, it shoves into the banks, creating “ice push berms” around the edge of the pond. Any vertical concrete structure would facilitate its own demise, and the sloped concrete design you mention would tend to help as the ice could expand over the structure instead of pushing into it.
@GWNorth-db8vn
@GWNorth-db8vn Месяц назад
@@troyhamon6666 - On a big lake, the pressure heaves leave a sheer wall on one side and a ramp you can't see on the other. That's one of the reasons you buy an old scrap car for the lake in winter. Sitting in an ice fishing hut when an icebreaker goes by half a mile away is an experience. The time for ice damage on shore is spring breakup and the wind is the major factor there. That's what pushes houses over and makes piles twenty feet high. Walls don't matter that much. The ice is in big floes and once the first few pile up against the wall, the rest slide over them.

I am not using the term “speed trap” because they will fine also you for going too slowly. If you’re not right on the number, based on their inaccurate measuring equipment you will get a ticket. Actually, concrete construction would have been in its infancy, and they knew next to nothing. There's a dam near me that was constructed in 1878, and the city partially drains the reservoir every Fall, because they don't trust it. And they don't have to worry about it freezing! I'd take a good long look at any dam built in the 1800s!
@pigdroppings
@pigdroppings Месяц назад
Not a dam, but the 2,000 year old concrete Pantheon temple in Rome is still functioning. The Pantheon is 155 feet in diameter and has a concrete dome. Many of the 2,000 year old concrete structures in Rome were used as a quarry and smashed into rubble, for various uses. About 40% of the Roman Colosseum is concrete.
@carlwilliams6977
@carlwilliams6977 Месяц назад
@@pigdroppings Good points! Turns out the dome of the (third) Pantheon is unenforced concrete. Quite the engineering feat! What I can tell you about 20th century concrete construction, is what I've seen doing seismic retrofits on concrete buildings that were constructed in the 1800s. Let's just say when they bothered to reinforce them, the rebar was laughable! In addition, the consistency of the concrete often varies so much it's shocking! It seems they hadn't devised a slump test yet! However, I guess it was a upgrade from The brick they were building with! I can also tell you about a trip to Turkey after their catastrophic quake, but I digress! Thanks for the history lesson though. I would have never thought it was possible, based on what I've seen!

This sounds great but there is no electricity in the area, all of the cabins/homes in the area are powered by solar or generators. It would definitely help out but would be insanely expensive to put in infrastructure to support it. Also it is very hard for Utah to put in infrastructure like this in place especially where this lake is located being close to several national parks and a national monument. The state gets sued a ton even on road improvement projects in the area by environmental groups so that makes it even more costly to improve and mitigate things like this.

This is a "mini disaster" potential which they can hopefully mitigate. Panguitch suffered the massive Brian Head Fire in June of 2017 which burned homes, untold acres of forest, and destroyed fish and wildlife ecosystems for years. Being privately operated, the dam is likely not inspected or maintained to the same degree as state or federal dams. I guess it comes down to money. The Brian Head fire mirrors what we have suffered in CA (Paradise), and puts the spotlight on the need for critical forest management, that has been impeded by environmental groups.

@jaydenpaxton457 Месяц назад
I grew up in the area and I hope this will help you understand the structure a bit better. The emergency spillway for the dam is the water going over the top of that concrete structure that is being moved. Below the concrete structure is a lot of granite. Every year during the spring summer time you can go to the lake and see it going over the concrete structure, and it’s been doing that ever since the concrete addition has been built. Also it’s hard for improvements to be made in this area as it is close to Zion national park, Bryce Canyon national park, and cedar breaks national monument. Whenever even road improvement projects are proposed the state or party involved gets sued the crap out of by environmental groups. It’s this kind of things that make any type of safety or risk mitigation projects with the dam impossible until a disaster happens.

Look up what happened to the NJ coast during the hard freeze of... '76 I think it was. Thousands of docks and bulkheads were shoved up out of the ground as the backbays and coast froze, and the tides pushed everything in the ice up and down. The surfline froze solid, the quiet along the beaches was eerie. I was attending Atlantic City Friends School at the time, and the cold then was brutal and bitter. And yes it was during the Oil Crisis. Horrible winter.

Thanks for the report. Reminds a little of what happened with the Paradise evacuation when there was only one major way out? Hope they allow plenty of time if they need to evacuate. Wish you smooth sailing. Take care.

Looks like a second way of getting water levels down and a 6-foot layer of rip rap on the lake side to stop the ice from crushing the top wall are needed.

Juan, another of your excellent reports. I read the Wall Street Journal; your reports consistently outdo the WSJ. Seriously, on another topic, recently you, or someone claiming to be you, paid me a high compliment. I was so surprised, stunned actually, I didn’t reply. If that was you, I am deeply honored. If it was someone ghosting you, I was still pleasantly impressed.

Saw a brief news story on this and of course you've detailed what actual going on in your true form! Thanks! May wife and I on one of our many road trips around the West in the early 2000's drove to the top of Brian Head and enjoyed the amazing views!

This is good to know. We have a cabin at Panguitch Lake, and I was worried about the town of Panguitch. In 2017, we had a major fire caused by some idiot burning weeds on a hot, windy summer day, so we don't need another disaster.

My mom was born and grew up in Standard Ville, they lived in a company house. They moved to Price when she was 15, that was 1961. My grandfather was an electrician in the Spring Canyon coal mine, he worked for them for 38 years, he was laid off because they were shutting down. He finished his 46 years total in Sunnyside for Kaiser Steel coal mine and retired in 1976.

They can easily add large quantity of siphons to lower the lake level. No pump required once a siphon is established. Can be accomplished pretty inexpensively too.

Juan, your reporting is excellent and most appreciated. You've included extra information giving the lengthy history a current importance. This is an unbelievably old structure. The foundation being 150yrs old is incredible. The foundation, no doubt, was built to last! As a long-time sub, I know your knowledge of the subject is extensive and you are a fact based reporter. You ALWAYS bring the receipts. Keep us posted on how this damn finally gets replaced if there's any Biden infrastructure money left. 🤞 There are so many infrastructure needs. For 50-60 years we built all of these wondrous damns and bridges and roads and............but now we've got to start updating, refreshing or replacing our public infrastructure. This should be a national goal spread over the next 20yrs.
