Hi designer. Well first, big bravo this game looks hype and I'll probably buy it later today. Two questions: do you prefer (i.e. make more money) it to be bought via itch or via DriveThru? And second question: do you know other videos or things that present a bit the rest of the game (like, the non fighting part, the tools for the GM, etc.)?
@velminiarchives3895
@velminiarchives3895 18 дней назад
@KamiSeiTo 1: I make a bigger cut off of itch, but you can only get physical copies through dtrpg. Both are good. 2: not really. There is an actual play from Six Feats Under from an early build of the game on my RU-vid, but it's not nearly as slick as this video or focused on answering your question specifically. My gm advice for PatD is basically as sugarpunch said - play like you are another player in pvp. As long as you build your enemies within the rules, you will be fine. Non-combat rules in patd are very simple. If you have a skill that applies to a situation, you succeed fantasticallu. If you do not, you fail comically. Characters are intended to be over the top.

Yeah. It made me worry a bit. Like, what if there is a tough foe, accompanied by two weaker lackies? General strategy would be to take the lackies out so you can focus on the boss, but if that means giving all their turns to the boss, wouldn't it make more sense to leave them be? Unless they have excellent support skills, they'd basically be a liability to the person they're guarding.

I've been a player for PaTD in a short (~6 session) adventure, and GM'd it for a one-shot. Incredible fun on both sides. Building an NPC comp is exactly as fun as making a character. The disruption and counterplay available in this game is absolutely its most incredible trait. I have fond memories of disrupting my opponents mid-combo with Chaos tokens by yanking them next to me, hiding my most powerful actions inside Fog so that my Control-based enemies can't disrupt them, and switching to Armor-based stances to walk through enemy Traps freely. Even simple effects like "steal a token" alter the entire fight by their sheer presence, forcing people with high-value tokens to stay on their toes at all times. I can't count how many times I looked at the enemies my GM plopped down, thought "oh that's so bullshit", and then proceeded to absolutely kick their ass.

Let’s say drinking an energy drink would give you a mid-range grapple attack or a purse that gives you a projectile attack by throwing away it’s contents or eating curry will let you breath fire. This would encourage one to go scavenging This may even be a great way for newcomers to get into Panic at the Dojo, by introducing skills as items, so they don’t have to put much thought into what abilities to invest when creating there character You can rescue survivors that will have there own movesets. You may be able to deal with small groups of zombies, but try to avoid big ones when you are alone, and you would want to stay away from looters if you don’t have to attack them.

Minor thing, the D&D rulebook only considers a natural one a failure in two scenarios. Attacking and Saving Throws. You never automatically succeed or fail any skill checks due to a 1 or a 20.
@PikaPenny17

I dont think 5e has that for saving throws either, at least by default. I do believe the DMs guide has optional rules for Nat 1s and nat 20s for skill checks and saving throws.

While true, there is a point where you have to consider if I roll the dice and come up with the lowest result and still wont fail, why did I even roll the dice to begin with? If I roll the highest outcome and dont succeed, why roll to begin with?

@pedrogabriel3158 18 дней назад
yeah but its cool to get a 20 doing something mundane and then it becomes epic players just like the hype moments even if theyre silly
@Drake_Blackwell
@Drake_Blackwell 18 дней назад
@@cdubsb3831I think it comes down to every table but you're right. If there is no variation between a binary success fail and you know that the player is incapable of succeeding or failing then as a DM you should not be asking for a roll there they just get to do it. This is actually why there are no automatic successes or automatic failures on skill checks, or at least one of the reasons. Because if you always failed on a one and always succeeded on a 20 then there would never be a situation where the DM just says you can't do that or yeah you do it no problem. You would always need to roll. That said some checks you might not be able to fail or fully succeed but there are degrees of results. For example if you're trying to force a lock and your character is some massive 20 strength barbarian there's probably no chance they don't kick the door down, but if they're actively trying to do it in a way that is quiet or hides the level of damage, then even if the main goal is open the door, you're really rolling to see how successful they are at keeping it quiet. It's one of those things where it's hard to write down the context for every possible interaction and the DM has to do the job of adjudicating when a roll is necessary.
@goji253
@goji253 18 дней назад
@@cdubsb3831 To determine the degree of failure or success. And because you yourself have no idea what the DC is so you damn well roll. I've heard this complaint before and its straight up nonsensical. If you are ridiculously good at e.g persuassion and have a +12 mod, you shouldn't fail a DC 8 check with a 5% chance every time. If you have noodle arms, you shouldn't have a 5% chance to lift that bolder blocking the way either. Proficency and expertise are MEANT to simulate you being good at something. People that are good at something don't fuck it up every 20th try. That'd be a horrible rate of failure. Imagine a pro basketball player messing up every 20th shot instead of every 100th or something.

As one of the few hardcore fans of Legends of the Wulin out there (who's still upset it never got any supplements), I'm immediately interested in this because it's being recommended by someone who's played that before. I'm even more interested because it has a similar "roll your dice and then use that to decide what you're doing this turn" mechanic like LotW had, instead of "decide what to do and then roll the dice and hope they let you" like in most other TTRPGs. This video just earned them a sale (especially at $15, that's a steal). 16:30 this is actually something i follow when I GMed a Lancer game a while back. Because all of the fights we had were not eliminations but various objectives that had to be pushed or held. Meaning my squad had a retreat zone and knew what failure means before initiatives rolled. For instance there was a jammed comms array, and I told them the effect this has is preventing proper responses from the garrison and bombardments from taking place. They won the encounter and got some extra call ins for the future mission. If they lost I would have said they got a lucky break, seemingly only scratching their paint jobs rather than dealing core damage (A reference to the early game "Lucky Paint Job" equipment their mechs could take)

Her hero type was Frantic, her Stances were "Moonblessed" (Angel Archetype, Power Form, Judgement Style), "Frenzy" (Punk Archetype, Wild Form, Bleeding Style) and "Bloodbath" (Demon Archetype, Blaster Form, Vampire Style). We had an awesome oneshot session, everyone was doing cool stuff like teleporting stuff and placing weakness curses and all that, and on the final turn I managed stand up from being reduced to 0hp because of my Stance, chip the last iron token of the boss, then the remainder of the second to last healthbar and then unleash a strike with all my banked Power tokens and other bullshit like the Weakness tokens I gave him and the shenanigans all the other players added to instantly destroy the final healthbar. Basically did a Critical Art on the boss. Absolute blast of a game.

6:20 - As a DM myself, I actually love battles where the players fight a massive number of enemies, but it's pretty boring for both the players and me to not have the PCs act for at least half the time. But it's very cool to see the Wizards/Sorcerers blowing up dozens of enemies with fireballs and having the tank and support act tactically to handle multiple enemies. DMs are like heels, you know. They're there just to make the PCs look good.

Found this video at a time when I was rabbit holing into different TTRPG's and this is a great find! I actually had an idea that will make it an easier sell to my friends who only know DnD: How do you create a story that will (1) introduce foreign combat mechanics (2) of a PvP style of tabletop combat (3) to a bunch of people who express their creativity in their builds? TOURNAMENT ARC! As a GM, I plan to structure a small, single elimination tournament. I will only let the players build Focused Archetypes to not complicate the builds so early in their PATD experience. Players can RP their backstories, motivations and intimidation tactics before rounds. During rounds, my main job will be to just literally referee the match; actions and outcomes are up to them. Rounds will also be on a finite square map with flat terrain just like an uncaged ring, which means they can win by elimination. In between rounds, I will let them modify one of their stances since they have an idea of whom they will face in the next round. Haven't decided yet whether the champion just straight up wins or will get a boss fight. But I know that as the champion, they will be the most in-tune with the mechanics and is most likely among them to join the next session. Anyone interested to continue the campaign can join with the same character; those disinterested, their characters will be dead/humiliated in canon. This idea is still in the works but not bad for a sort of Session 0 (or Session "0.5"), right? I wouldn't have thought about it if not for this video. So, thank you, SugarPunch!

i really like dice systems that do the randomness FIRST and then ask you to make decisions after seeing the randomized results. ive made my own ttrpg systems before and all of my most recent results have done emphasized decision making AFTER rolling dice. but this game's way of doing it seems both REALLY elegant and also VERY high production value. Designing so many movesets and abilities that fit together using this dice system seems really really cool. as does the token system for, essentially, tracking conditions.
